You Are The Salt Of The Earth

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – The Virtuous Life – Day 231- Matthew 5-13-16 – You Are Salt Of The Earth – Growing As Disciples

“You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled by men. “You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden.  Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house.  In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven. Matthew 5:13-16 (NIV)

Salt And Light

Do you want to be salt and light, for me, in the world? Do you want to bring glory and honor and praise to my name? Do you want others to be drawn to me through the witness of your life? Yes Lord, I want all these things to be true of my life. I want my life to shine brightly for you in the darkness of this world. I want my life to add your flavor and preservative to what would otherwise be foul corruption in the world. How can I be salt and light for you in the world? That is a very good question. If you want to be salt and light for me in the world there is one thing you must not do and another thing that you must do. You have my full attention. I am listening carefully to you. That’s good. First, you must not let the corruption that is in the world destroy your saltiness or diminish your light. That means that I must not allow myself to be conformed to the values, patterns, and practices of the world. I must throw off anything and everything that would hinder my being salt and light for you. That means that I must not allow myself to become enticed and entrapped by sin. That is correct.

What must I do if I want to be salt and light for you in the world? You tell me. I must go and do what you ask of me. I must do the good works that you have prepared in advance for me to do. Throwing off sin and not getting entangled in worldly pursuits will make it so my saltiness is not destroyed, or my light is not diminished. But going and doing what you ask of me will help me to shine brightly for you in the darkness of this world. Accomplishing your purposes and fulfilling your plans will help me to bring the flavor of your goodness to others all round me. Others will be drawn to you as I remain salty and shiny for you. That is true. That is right. That is certain. That is what I will do. That will be very good.

Lord, thank you for making me to be salt and light in the world. Thank you for giving me good deeds to do for you. Use me to bring glory and honor and praise to your name. Draw a multitude of others to yourself through the salt and light of my life. Amen

Salt And Light

Is that what you want to be? Is what do I want to be? Do you want to be salt and light in the world? Do you want others to give thanks and praise and honor and glory to me because of what they feel and see coming out of your life? Nothing would give me greater hope and joy and pleasure to be salt and light for you in the world. To know that I have been, am, and will be used by you would be very satisfying and gratifying. How can I be salt for you in the world? How can I be a light for you in the world? Those are very good questions. Let me ask you a question. Go ahead, I am listening. Does salt and light originate in you? I’m not sure what you mean. Are you the source of salt and light that will cause others to give thanks and praise and honor and glory to me? Will doing what comes naturally to you bring salt and light to others in the world? Those are easy questions to answer. What are your answers? I am certainly not the source of world changing salt and light, there is no doubt about that. Doing what comes naturally to me will never bring salt and light into the world. My efforts alone will never give others cause to give thanks and praise and honor and glory to you. It is good that you know these thoughts to be true.

So, what then will cause you to be able to live as salt and light in the world? Only living in an intimate relationship with you will allow me to be salt and light in the world. You are the source of any salt and light that will come out of my life. As I allow you to live in and through me, I will salt the world all around me with your flavor. As I allow you to live in and through me, I will bring light into the darkness of the world all around me. Will you live in an intimate relationship with me? Will you draw near to me? Will you walk with me through life? Will you allow me to make you salt and light in the world? Yes Lord, I will. That will be very good.

Heavenly Father help me to be salt on this earth. Help me to bring your flavor to people everywhere. Help me to be a light in the world. Help me to shine in the darkness in such a way that people will give thanks, praise and honor and glory to you. This is my prayer. Amen

Salt Of The Earth

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Transformation - Matthew 5:13 - Salt Of The Earth - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Transformation – Matthew 5:13 – Salt Of The Earth – Growing As Disciples

“You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled by men. Matthew 5:13 (NIV)

My Salt

You are the salt of the earth. Do you have any idea what that means? I’m not sure, but I have some ideas. Let me hear them. Salt adds seasoning to what might otherwise be bland and tasteless. You salt just about everything you eat, don’t you?  Yes, I do. How can you add flavor and seasoning to everything that you think, say and do in this world? On my own, I can’t add any salt seasoning to anything.  Why is that? It is only you living inside of me that makes me able to bring flavor and seasoning to others in this world. I’m glad that you know that. Will you rely on me to use you as flavoring and seasoning in the world?  Yes Lord, I will.

What do you think my salt seasoning looks and tastes like? Your salt is nothing like the salt I use to flavor my food. Your salt dramatically stands out from all the blandness and tastelessness of the world. Your salt is in short supply in the world. When people see the pouring out of your salt, it gets noticed. Your salt changes the hearts and minds and lives of people. Your salt is attractive and highly desirable. People are drawn to you when they experience a taste of your salt.  Once someone tastes your salt, they want nothing else. There is no real substitute for your salt. The excess salt that I eat may harm my body.  Your salt brings health and healing to me and to anyone else it touches.

I crave your salt.  I want to live in your salt. I want your salt to cover me from head to toe.  I want to be used to spread your salt to everyone I meet.  I want your salt to penetrate all that I think, say and do. There is nothing I want to think, say or do unless it has your salt on it.

You know the words that describe my salt, don’t you?  You know where my salt comes from, don’t you?  You know that my salt will be poured out from your life, don’t you?  Yes, I do. Your salt comes from your Holy Spirit living inside of me. Your salt comes in a variety of flavors. You want me to be a dispenser of your salt seasoning in all that I think, say and do. You want me to season the world with the salty flavors of your love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self- control. Yes, that’s right.  Pour your salt into my life so that it can pour out of my life.  Is that your prayer? Yes, it is.  I will hear and answer your prayer.

Heavenly Father, thank you for making me to be a salty witness for Christ in a bland and tasteless world. Send me to where you want me to go and guide me to what you want me to do for you. Use me according to your plan so others will be drawn to Christ. Amen
