Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Promises – Day 16 – Joshua 1:8-9 – Prosperous And Successful – Growing As Disciples

Do not let this Book of the Law depart from your mouth; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.  Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go.” Joshua 1:8-9 (NIV)

Meditate

What does that mean? What does what mean? What does it mean to meditate on your word? What do you think it means? I will tell you what it doesn’t mean for sure. What’s that? You don’t want me to empty my mind. You don’t want my mind to go blank. That’s true. You want me to carefully think about your word. You want me to take your word deeply into my heart and mind and life. You want your word to dwell in me richly. You want me to hide your word in my heart. That’s right. What will my word do in you when you meditate on it? Your word will change my heart. Your word will transform my mind. Your word will guide my life. Your word will form and shape the thoughts of my mind, the words of my mouth and the deeds of my life. Your word will help me to come to know and to love and to follow and serve you all the days of my life. Your Holy Spirit will use your word like a sword to fight in me, with me, for me and through me. Your word will make me able to resist temptation and stand against evil. Your word will strengthen and encourage me. Your word will make me able to courageously move forward with you to wherever you lead me, to do whatever you ask of me. Your word will help me to live a life that is good and right and pleasing to you. Your word will help me to bear fruit for your kingdom and bring glory to your name. Yes, my word will do all these things in you, with you, for you and through you.

When will you meditate on my word? How will you meditate on my word? I will meditate on your word day and night. I will read your word. I will study your word. I will memorize your word. I will pray your word. I will proclaim your word. I will teach your word. I will even sing your word. Your word will always be before me. Most importantly of all, I will put your word into practice. I will allow your word to be the sure and solid foundation of my life. That will be very good. Keep my word in your heart, and on your mind, and coming out of your mouth and you will live a life that I can and will surely bless. Thank you, Lord.

Lord, thank you for your word. It is my delight to meditate on your word day and night. Use your word to change my heart, transform my mind, and guide my life. Help me to be careful to do everything that you ask of me. I want to live a life that is pleasing to you. Amen

Wherever You Go

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – God The Father – Joshua 1:8-9 – Wherever you Go – Growing As Disciples

Your Thoughts

What are your thoughts? That seems like an odd question to me. Why is that? I don’t know that I have ever been asked, what are my thoughts. Really? Well, if I have been asked about my thoughts there has usually been some context. You gave me no context. You simply asked me about my thoughts. Yes, I did. I will ask you some follow up questions. That will help. What do you allow your mind to think? Do you think thoughts that are good and right and true? Do you think thoughts that are pure and helpful and healthy? What do you allow your mind to dwell on? Do you take control of the thoughts of your mind? Do you focus your attention on what you want to think? Do I have control of my mind? Can I choose or reject the thoughts of my mind? You tell me. I know that my mind is a battleground. I know that I think good and bad thoughts. A thought may come into my mind but that does not mean I must continue to think about it. I can choose to reject thoughts that are not good and pleasing to you. Yes, you can.

Is your mind strong? How successful have you been at rejecting thoughts that are not good and pleasing to me? At one time my mind was very weak. I would continue to think about every thought that came into my mind. What has changed? How has your mind grown stronger? Meditating on your word has changed my mind. How so? Meditating on your word has given me a hunger for your thoughts. Meditating on your word has given me a distaste for thoughts that are not good and pleasing to you. Meditating on your word has been cleansing and healing and transforming my mind. You are changing my heart, transforming my mind and guiding my life by your word. Yes, I am.

So, I will answer your question. Go ahead. My thoughts are on you and on the life you have called me to live. I want nothing less and nothing more than to know and do your will. I want my thoughts to be good and right and pleasing to you. So, I will keep on meditating on your word. I will meditate on your word day and night. I will be careful to do everything written in your word. That will be very good.

Heavenly Father, I will meditate on your word day and night. Your word will constantly be on my mind and in my heart. Help me to put into practice everything you have written in your word. Guard, guide and bless my life by your word as I follow and obey you. Amen

Meditate On It

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Spiritual Warfare - Joshua 1:8-9 - Meditate On It - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Spiritual Warfare – Joshua 1:8-9 – Meditate On It – Growing As Disciples

Meditate

Will you meditate on my word? That is a fairly straight forward and direct question. It requires a simple yes or no answer. Really, that’s it? Well no, that’s not it. Meditating on your word will require far more than a simple yes or no answer. Like what? A yes answer will require a lifetime of action. How so? You are asking me to meditate on your word day and night, are you not? Yes, I am. There will be nothing easy about that. That will require a significant commitment of my time and energy. That will require a concrete plan with actual actions steps. Yes, it will. What do you have in mind? I will set a part a special time and place to meet with you in your word. Without such a commitment, I doubt that I will ever come to meditate on your word. That’s true. What else? I will carry your word with me wherever I go. I will carry your word with me in whatever I do. That will be very good.

What is my word doing for you? I know that your word is changing my heart, transforming my mind and guiding my life. Your word is giving me new thoughts to think, words to speak and deeds to do. Your word is giving me wisdom and courage and strength so that I am able to both know and do your will. Your word is protecting me. How so? Your word is making me able to stand against evil and resist temptation. Yes, it is.

I would like to correct something that I have said. What’s that? I said that there would be nothing easy about meditating on your word. Yes, you did. Were you wrong? In a way, I was wrong. Meditating on your word does take significant discipline and effort. However, it has become my joy to meditate on your word. It is my delight to hear from you. It is has become my passionate and on-fire desire to come to know you. How can I know you apart from your words? How can I come to know you, if I don’t stop to take time to listen to you? How can I go and do your will, if I don’t listen to your instructions? So, here I am right now. I am meditating on your word in our time and place. I will carry your word with me wherever I go and in whatever I do today. That will be very good.

Lord, thank you for your word. It is my delight to meditate on your word. I know that your word is changing my heart, transforming my mind and guiding my life. Your word gives me wisdom, courage and strength to do everything you ask me to go and do for you. Amen

What will help you to be prosperous and successful? What will you hold on to through all the ups and downs and twists and turns of life? I know what I will not hold on to. What’s that? I will not hold on to my gifts and talents and abilities. I will not hold on to my education and training. I will not hold on to my money and material possessions. I will not hold on to my strength and health. I will not hold on to my past accomplishments. Not one of these things will sustain me through all the twists and turns and ups and downs of life.
