Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Rhythms – Luke 5:15-16 – Withdraw – Pray – Growing As Disciples

But now even more the report about him went abroad, and great crowds gathered to hear him and to be healed of their infirmities. But he would withdraw to desolate places and pray. Luke 5:15-16 (ESV)

Noise

My life has gotten far too busy. I have pursued a hectic and wearying schedule. I’m always on the go. I have raced from one thing to another. I have so little time and no margin. I have been crabby. I have been short tempered. I’m stressed out. I’m at my wits end. The busier I am the less I seem to get done. I feel like I am accomplishing a lot of nothing. I feel like I’m going nowhere fast. Will my life amount to anything when it is all said and done? Will I have gone where you have sent me? Will I have done what you have asked me? Will I have borne fruit for your kingdom? Will I have brought glory to your name? Those are very good questions. How will you ever know the answers to them? What do you mean by that? Where will the answers to your questions come from? Will you find the answers to your questions from within yourself? I will certainly not be able to answer my questions by myself. The answers to my questions are certainly not within myself. Only you can help me to know the answers to my questions. That’s right.

Are you asking me a lot of questions? Are you quietly waiting to hear my answers to your questions? Do you think that I will shout out answers to your un-asked questions as you race through your busy life? Will you be able to hear me above the crowd that has pressed in on your life? You have asked me great questions. No, I have not been coming to you to ask you questions. No, I have not been quietly waiting to hear any answers from you. No, I don’t think you will shout out answers to questions that I haven’t even bothered to ask of you. No, I don’t think I will be able to hear your answers above the crowd that I have allowed to press in on my life. You have answered me well.

Is there something that you want to do differently? Is there a new pattern that you would like to establish in your life? Is there a new rhythm for your life that would help you to hear from me? Yes, I want to meet with you. I want to take time to listen to you. I want to hear from you. That sounds good. Those are great desires. What action will you take? I will set aside a time and place to meet with you. I will withdraw from the crowds. I will step away from busyness. I will eliminate all the noise in my life. I will talk and listen to you. I will wait patiently for your guidance. I will listen to your instruction. I will go where you guide me and do what you ask of me. Then I will know for certain that my life will count for something as I follow and serve you. Yes, you will.

Lord, I have allowed myself to be surrounded by busyness in life. I have been swallowed up by continually answering the never-ending needs of those around me. Help me to take time and make a place when and where I can withdraw to meet with you in prayer. Amen

Often Withdrew To Lonely Places And Prayed

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Becoming Like Christ - Day 302 - Luke 5:15-16 - Often Withdrew To Lonely Places And Prayed - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Becoming Like Christ – Day 302 – Luke 5:15-16 – Often Withdrew To Lonely Places And Prayed – Growing As Disciples

Yet the news about him spread all the more, so that crowds of people came to hear him and to be healed of their sicknesses. But Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed. Luke 5:15-16 (NIV)

Withdraw

There is no doubt about it, that is what I need to do, right now. What do you need to do right now? I need to withdraw from the busyness of life to meet with you in prayer. Why do you need to meet with me in prayer? I’m running on empty. I am weary and worn out. I have been allowing myself to be swallowed up by the busyness of life. I have been running myself ragged. I am certain that I have allowed others to set the pace and agenda of my life. It seems like I have been chasing one great idea after another. None of them are bad. All of them are good. Something has give. Something has to go. My life is lacking a defined purpose and a focused direction. I’d have to say that my life is somewhat of a scattered mess. I need to pull back. I need to refocus. I need you to revive and refresh and restore my life. I need to receive guidance and instruction from you. I want to know where you are leading me. I want to know what you are giving me to do. For all these reasons, I need to quiet myself before you. I need to meet with you in prayer. Yes, you do.

Come to me. Draw near to me and I will draw near to you. Quiet yourself before me so you can hear me speaking to you. I will revive and refresh and restore your life. I will show you where I am leading you. I will show you what I am giving you to do. I have a purpose and plan for your life. You will receive guidance and instruction from me. I will strengthen you. I will empower you. Rest in my presence. In me, you will find hope and meaning and purpose. In me, your life will overflow with joy and thanksgiving. I will come. I will draw near. I will quiet myself before you. That will be very good.

I do know one thing for sure. What’s that? You are leading me to you. You want me to go deeper with you in prayer. You want me to learn to do the work of prayer. I don’t need to run here and there and everywhere. I don’t need to come up with a great idea. I don’t need to seek to achieve some great accomplishment. You simply want me to hear from you. You want me to pray the prayers that you will give me to pray as I meet with you in prayer. Yes, I do.

Lord, I will withdraw from the busyness of life to meet with you. I will not let the demands of life distance me from you. I will not allow myself to be swallowed up by all the demands of life. I will go to a quiet place so that I can hear from you as we meet in prayer. Amen

Key Question… How have you been revived, refreshed and restored as you have met with the Lord in prayer?

Withdrew To Lonely Places

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Becoming Like Christ - Day 246 - Luke 5:15-16 - Withdrew To Lonely Places - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Becoming Like Christ – Day 246 – Luke 5:15-16 – Withdrew To Lonely Places – Growing As Disciples

Yet the news about him spread all the more, so that crowds of people came to hear him and to be healed of their sicknesses. But Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed. Luke 5:15-16 (NIV)

My Priority

That is my priority. What is your priority? It is my priority to meet with you. Tell me more about your priority. Notice, I did not say that meeting with you is my first priority. Yes, I did notice that. Why did you not say meeting with me was your first priority? I did not want to convey the idea that any other priority came even remotely close to my priority of meeting with you. That’s good. How will you be certain to establish your priority of meeting with me? That is a very good question. I know one thing for certain. What’s that? You will not receive my leftover time. I will not let a busy schedule or the demands of life crowd you out of my life. I will not meet with you only when I get around to it. Why are these thoughts of yours so important? In the past, I have had very good intentions of meeting with you. But I never actually carved out a time and set a specific place to meet with you. I never put our meeting together firmly on my schedule. I know putting meeting with you on my schedule sounds so formal and maybe even artificial. But when I haven’t put meeting with you firmly on my schedule as my utmost and highest priority then it has never happened. Days and weeks and even months went by without my meeting with you. My meeting with you was nothing more than hit or miss. That is no way to live in an intimate relationship with you. Is that your desire? Do you want to live in an intimate relationship with me? Yes, that is the desire of my heart. I want to know you intimately. I want to love you passionately. I want to serve you completely.  I want my heart and mind and life to be fully devoted to you. That is very good. Daily, I will meet with you in prayer. Daily, I will meet with you in worship. Daily, I will meet with you in your word. Daily, I will meet with you as I go and do all that you ask of me. In every way, I will be listening attentively to you. My entire life will be focused on you. I will allow you to guard and guide my life. Then you will be able to receive all that I have for you. Then you will have all that you want from me. Then I will be the priority of your heart and mind and life. Thank you, Heavenly Father.

Heavenly Father, I will withdraw daily to a quiet and lonely place to meet with you in prayer. I will not let a busy schedule crowd you out of my life. I will not leave our meeting to chance. You will not have my leftover time. You are the priority on my schedule. Amen

Key Question… Why must you never allow the demands of life to crowd out your time in prayer with your Heavenly Father?

Living It Out… Make it your daily ongoing practice to withdraw to quiet and lonely places to pray to your Heavenly Father.

Seeing It Happen… Have faith that your Heavenly Father will meet with you as you withdraw to quiet and lonely places to pray.
