The Eye Is The Lamp Of The Body

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Becoming Like Christ - Day 182 - Matthew 6:22-23 - The Eye Is The Lamp Of The Body - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Becoming Like Christ – Day 182 – Matthew 6:22-23 – The Eye Is The Lamp Of The Body – Growing As Disciples

“The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are good, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eyes are bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light within you is darkness, how great is that darkness! Matthew 6:22-23 (NIV)

Focus

What are you focused on? What has your attention? What occupies your thoughts? What is guiding the course of your life? What are you are your desires? What are your dreams? What are your goals? What do you hope to accomplish with your life? Those are all good questions. Do you have any answers to my questions? Yes, I have an answer to your questions. Just, one answer? Yes, I have just one answer to your question that may sound like many answers. I want to know you and live the life you are calling me to live. I want to do your will. I want to go and do what you ask of me. I want to accomplish your purposes. I want to fulfill your plans. So, you have my focus. My attention is on you. Your will and ways occupy my thoughts. You are guarding the course of my life. It is my desire and dream and hope and goal to bear fruit for your kingdom and bring glory to your name. That is very good.

Do you have any idea why it is critically important that you lead a focused life? Yes, I do. Tell me why your life critically needs focus. The world and all that is in it seeks to pull me in a thousand different directions, none of which would be towards you. How so? My eyes could focus on worldly pleasure. My life could become all about gratifying desires. My eyes could focus on worldly wealth and material possessions. My life could become all about acquiring wealth and materials possessions. My eyes could focus on worldly power and prestige and influence. My life could become all about living for the accolades and the applause of the crowd. Probably the biggest danger of an improper focus is that my eyes could be entirely on myself. Then I would live a self-indulgent, self-centered and self-sufficient life that would never come to rely on you. I want to live my life focused on you. I want to turn away from heart and mind and life away from all worldly focuses so that I can fully live the abundant life that you are calling me to live with and for you. That will be very good. You can very sure that I will help you to know me. I will help you to go and do my will. You will certainly live the life I am calling you to live. Thank you, Lord.

Lord, I will carefully guard what I allow my eyes to see. I will turn away from what is not good and right and pleasing to you. I will keep my heart and mind and life entirely focused on you. Help me to fully and abundantly live the life you are calling me to live. Amen

Key Question… How carefully are you guarding what you allow your eyes to see, heart to feel and mind to think?

Living It Out… Focus your heart and mind and life on the Lord and the life He has for you to live.

Seeing It Happen… Have faith that the Lord will help you to keep your heart and mind and life focused on Him.

Get Ready To Share… Share with another person or your small group how you are keeping your heart and mind and life focused on the Lord.

Prayer To Bless Others… May you keep your heart and mind and life focused on the Lord.

The Eye Is The Lamp Of The Body

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Eyes - Matthew 6:22-23 - The Eye Is The Lamp Of The Body - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Eyes – Matthew 6:22-23 – The Eye Is The Lamp Of The Body – Growing As Disciples

“The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are good, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eyes are bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light within you is darkness, how great is that darkness! Matthew 6:22-23 (NIV)

Focus

What is the focus of your life? I’m not sure that I understand your question. What will you pursue? What do you value? What are my choices? That is an insightful question. Why is that? You know that you have a choice to make. You may think that you have many choices. You would be wrong about that. Why is that? In regard to my question there are only two choices. In answer to my question you will choose one choice over another. I have no idea what you are talking about. I will make what I’m talking about clear to you.

In this life you will either choose the things of this world or the things of heaven. You will pursue the treasures of this life or the treasures of heaven. You will store up earthly or heavenly treasures. You will focus your attention on all that you can see now or on what remains unseen and is in the future. You will live your life for yourself or you will live your life for me. You will keep your eyes on me or you will allow your eyes to be allured by all that the world has to offer. Have I made myself clear to you? Yes, you have made yourself perfectly clear to me.

I have allowed my eyes to be allured by the things of this world. I have chased after comfort and pleasure. I have pursued all the earthly treasures that money could buy. I have let my focus be on what I can see in the here and now. Seldom have I thought of heaven. Storing up treasure in heaven has rarely entered my mind. I have lived for myself rather than for you. Forgive me. Everything has changed. That life is now gone. You have set me free to live my life with and for you. I am now pursuing you and the life that you have called me to live. Earthly treasures mean nothing to me. Now, I want to bear fruit for your kingdom and bring glory to your name. Now, I want you to use my life however you see fit. Now my eyes are on you. Now my life is focused on knowing you and walking in your ways. I am at your service. My life is in your hands. I am at your disposal. I want to do all the good works that you have planned for me to do for you. Now, I want to store up treasures in heaven with you. That is very good. That is what you will do.

Lord, my eyes and life have been focused on treasures of this life. Forgive me. No longer will I attempt to store up earthly treasures. Instead my eyes and life will be focused on loving, following and serving you. Help me to store up treasures in heaven with you. Amen

Your Eye Is A Lamp

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Promises - Day 278 - Matthew 6:22-23 - Your Eye Is A Lamp - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Promises – Day 278 – Matthew 6:22-23 – Your Eye Is A Lamp – Growing As Disciples

Your eye is a lamp that provides light for your body. When your eye is good, your whole body is filled with light.  But when your eye is bad, your whole body is filled with darkness. And if the light you think you have is actually darkness, how deep that darkness is! Matthew 6:22-23 (NLT)

Walk In The Light

Do you want to live in the light with me? Do you want to separate yourself from the darkness of this world? Do you want to walk in the light with me? Yes, I want to live and walk in the light with you. Yes, I want to separate myself from the darkness of this world. How can I live and walk in the light with you? That is a very good question. It is a question to always keep before you. Why is that? Living and walking in the light with me will require an ongoing decision on your part that you will need to continually affirm as you follow me. I’m not understanding. You must keep on guarding what you allow your eyes to see as you follow me. You must keep on deciding to walk away from darkness as you focus your heart and mind and life on me. Why must I continue to affirm this decision? Why isn’t a one-time decision for all my life enough? You live in a world filled with darkness. Darkness surrounds you. Darkness will attempt to alure and entice you. Darkness will try to distract and divert you and throw your life off course. These attacks will come through what you allow your eyes to see. These attacks will come against you throughout your entire life. You must resist them. You must stand against them. You must fight against them. The only way to be victorious over the darkness in this world is by continually keeping your heart and mind and life focused on me. Keep on seeing what I want you to see. What do you want me to see? I want you to see me. I want you to see where I am leading you. I want you to see me working in and through you. I want you to see my hand on your life. I want you to see my blessing and favor resting on you. I want you to see my word changing your heart, transforming your mind, and guiding your life. I want you to see that you are bearing fruit for my kingdom and bringing glory to my name. I want you to see that you are a bright and shinning witness for me in the darkness of this world. Do you want to see what I want you to see? Yes Lord, I do. I will keep on guarding what I allow my eyes to see so I can live and walk in the light with you. That will be very good.

Lord, I will guard my eyes from seeing what will bring darkness into my life. I will choose to see what you want me to see. I will turn from darkness to live in your light. Daily, I will see your word changing my heart, transforming my mind, and guiding my life. Amen

Key Question…  How are you guarding your eyes from seeing what will bring darkness into your life?

Living It Out…  Choose to see what the Lord wants you to see over all the darkness that is in the world.

Seeing It Happen…  Have faith that your life will be filled with light as you see what the Lord wants you to see.

Get Ready To Share…  Share with another person or your small group how you are choosing to see what the Lord wants you to see.

Prayer To Bless Others…  May you guard what you allow your eyes to see so your life will be full of light.

Full Of Light

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Be - Matthew 6:22-23 - Full Of Light - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide- Be – Matthew 6:22-23 – Full Of Light – Growing As Disciples

“The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are good, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eyes are bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light within you is darkness, how great is that darkness! Matthew 6:22-23 (NIV)

Your Focus

What has the focus of your attention? What are you allowing yourself to see with your eyes? Is this an important question?  Yes, this is a very important question. Your entire destiny will be guided by what you allow yourself to see with your eyes. What you allow your eyes to see will become the thoughts of your mind. The thoughts of your mind will become the actions of your life. The actions of your life will define who you are and what you have done. So, I had better think long and hard about what I am allowing myself to see with my eyes. That’s right.

You have very important choices before you. What are my choices? You can choose to focus your eyes on what will fill your heart and mind and life with light. You can choose to focus your eyes on what will fill your heart and mind and life with darkness. Obviously, I don’t want to focus my eyes on what will fill my heart and mind and life with darkness. No, you do not. How can I focus my eyes on what will fill my eyes and heart and mind and life with light? You must choose to focus your eyes and heart and mind and life on me. In choosing to focus your entire being on me, you will also be taking your focus off the world and all the darkness that is in it. You will walk on the path of light with me. That is what I want. That is what I will do. I will walk with you through life. That will be every good.

What can I expect and look forward to as I walk through life with you? What will I see as I keep my eyes focused on you? You can look forward to knowing me. You can anticipate being able to know and do my will. You will walk in my ways. You will go where I send you. You will do what I ask of you. It will be your joy to live your life with and for me. As your eyes and heart and mind and life are focused on me you will see me using you to bear fruit for my kingdom and bring glory to my name. Your focus will no longer be on the treasures of this life. Your focus will be on the rewards of heaven. You will live with eager expectation to the day that you will come to live forever in heaven with me. That is what I want. That is what will you will have as you live your life with and for me.

Lord, my eyes have not always looked in the proper direction. That is an understatement. I have allowed my eyes to see what has brought darkness into my life. No more! Now, I will focus my eyes, heart and mind on you so I can live the life you have for me. Amen
