Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Wisdom – Built His House On The Rock – Matthew 7:24-27 – Growing As Disciples

“Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.” Matthew 7:24-27 (NIV)

Firm Foundation

Storms are certain in this life. They come to everyone. Sometimes you can see them coming from a great distance. At other times they will come when you least expect them and they will take you completely by surprise. Storms come in all different shapes and sizes. Something that seems so tame, safe and harmless can cause a great storm in your life. Sometimes your own careless, inattentive actions or lack of action can bring a storm upon you. Many storms just happen. You have no control over them and they aren’t your fault. No matter what the size, shape or cause of a storm, you can be certain that they will beat on your life. How will your life stand up under a heavy storm? Are you prepared to face them?

Would you like to know how to stand up under a heavy storm in life? Yes Lord, I would. Take a lesson from the expert builder. The most important part of his project is the foundation. If the foundation isn’t right, the rest of the structure won’t matter. The house can look magnificent in every detail but if the foundation is not secure, it will one day collapse like a house of cards when a storm beats against it. Would you like your life to have a secure foundation anchored in rock that will be able to withstand all the storms of life? Yes Lord, I definitely would like that.

I am the expert builder. My words are the ingredients of a secure foundation. My words are as hard as rock. You can anchor your life in me and my words. How do I do that Lord? There are two different ways to hear in life. One person hears my words and considers them to be interesting. They file my words away along with all the other words that they hear from the world. They pick and choose the words that they will put into practice based on their own thoughts, opinions, feelings, and desires. Usually my words end up a distant second place in their life, never to be put into practice. This person is building their life on the sand. Their life will collapse under a heavy storm. You don’t want that. No Lord, I don’t.

What does the other hearer do differently? The other hearer listens carefully to my words and puts them into practice. My words have final authority in their life. They don’t pick and choose what they like to hear and want to put into practice. Sometimes my word will be hard for them to hear. It will challenge their thoughts, words and actions. Often times my word will guide them to live in ways that are distinctly different than those in the world around them. Despite all the demand and challenges of my words, they are committed to following and obeying me no matter the cost to them personally. These followers of mine are building a secure foundation in me that will be able to withstand all the storms of life. Is that what you want? Will you put my words into practice in your life? Yes Lord, I will. Very good, follow me.

Lord, thank you that you are working in me, on and through me. Use your word to change my heart and transform my mind. I want my life to be built on you and your words. Construct my life according to your purposes and plans. Amen

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – The Word Centered Life – Day 2 – Matthew 7:24-27 – Hears These Words Of Mine And Puts Them Into Practice – Growing As Disciples

Into Practice

It is very good that you are making every effort to meet with me in my word. It is excellent that you are listening attentively to me. It is very wise that you have set a specific daily time and place to hear what I have to say to you. There is one thing that you must also do if you want to have a life that is built on a rock-solid foundation. What’s that? You must be very sure that you are not only hearing my word, but you must also make equally sure that you are putting my word into practice. You must hear and do my word. I get that, I understand. Do you have more to say on this subject? I know that your word is filled with your promises. I also know that with each of your promises there is a condition or conditions that must be fulfilled as part of receiving your promises. Can you say more? Describe one of my conditions. Well, I can do one better. In the verses here, that we are considering, you have one promise and two conditions. The promise can only be fulfilled if the two conditions are met. Your promise is that I can have a rock-solid foundation for my life that will withstand the storms of life. In order for that promise to be fulfilled, I need to both hear and put your word into practice. So, hearing your word on a daily basis is vitally important. So also, is putting your word into practice. How or why will hearing and putting my word into practice build a rock-solid foundation for your life that will be able to withstand the storms that are sure to come? Your word will change my heart and transform my mind. Your word will guard and guide the course of my life. Meeting with you in your word will give me the wisdom and strength and perseverance through any storm I will face in life. The habit of meeting daily with you in your word will cause me to rely on you for your help. You will be my shelter. You will be my refuge and fortress and deliverer. Yes, I will. You will have taught me that my hope and help is in and comes from you as I hold on to your promises. That is true. That is right. That is certain. Thank you, Lord.

Lord, I will set apart a daily time and place to meet with you in your word. I will listen attentively to all that you have to say to me. I will not only listen, but I will put your word in practice so that I will have a rock-solid foundation for the entire course of my life. Amen

A Wise Man

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Identity - Matthew 7:24-27 - A Wise Man - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Identity – Matthew 7:24-27 – A Wise Man – Growing As Disciples

Storms

In this sin broken world you will experience storms in life. They are certain to come. They came upon me. They will come upon you. They will come with warning. They will come without warning, when you least expect them. Will your life be able to withstand the storms that will come against you? That is a good question. How can my life stand against the storms of life that are certain to come against me? That is an even better question.

Your life is like a building. You will have the opportunity to choose the materials with which you will build your life. I’m not sure what you mean. Think about it, what materials do people choose to build their lives? What gives people a sense of comfort and security. What do people want to acquire for themselves? What are people seeking in life? I get it, you have given me enough clues. I could choose to build my life on any number of things. Like what? I could build my life on fame. I could build my life on fortune. I could build my life on all my accomplishments. I could build my life on power and prestige and possessions. Will any of these be a firm foundation for your life? Will any of these withstand the storms of life? Is there any of these things that a storm of life could not take away from you? No, a storm in life could sweep any of these away like house that was built on sand.

On what firm foundation will you build your life? I will build my life on you. I will build my life on your word. How will you do that? Every day I will meet with you in your word. Many hear my word, many do not put my word into practice. That won’t be me. I will listen very carefully to all that you want to say to me. I will build my life on putting your word into practice. It will be my fervent prayer to ask you to help me to both hear and put your word into practice. That will be very good. Your life will withstand the storms of life as you build your life on hearing and putting my word into practice.

Lord, every day I will meet with you in your word. I love to hear you speaking to me through your word. Help me to put your word into constant practice. Thank you that your words are a firm foundation on which my life is made secure against the storms of life. Amen

Founded On The Rock

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Freedom – Matthew 7:24-27 – Founded On The Rock – Growing As Disciples

“Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock. And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell, and great was the fall of it.” Matthew 7:24-27 (ESV)

Hear And Do

Do you want to build your life on a firm foundation? Do you want your life to be able to withstand the storms of life? Why are you asking me these questions? These are very important questions. Why is that? You can be certain that storms will come into your life. Storms came into my life. Storms will come into your life. Storms are inevitable. I would like you to be prepared for the storms of life. I would like you to be able to withstand the storms of life. Then we certainly want the same thing.

How can I withstand the storms of life? How can I build my life on a firm foundation? You will need to do two things regularly if you want to build your life on a firm foundation and withstand the storms of life. I’m listening. You have my full attention. That’s good. You are already on the right track. What do you mean by that? You must listen to my word. You must give my word your full attention. Take my word into your heart and mind and life. Let my word dwell in you richly. Think about my word day and night. Let my word be your meditation. Let my word change your heart. Let my word transform your mind. Let my word guide your life. Don’t let a day go by that you don’t meet with me in my word. Is there any day that you do not need to hear from me? Is there any time that you can live without my guidance and counsel? No, there is not any day that I don’t need to hear from you. I will listen to hear all that you want to say to me. That is very good.  This is the first part of what you must do if you want to build your life on a firm foundation and be able to withstand the storms of life.

What else must I do if I want to build my life on a firm foundation and be able to withstand the storms of life? You must put my word into practice. It is not enough to hear my word. You must do what my word says. It will do you no good to only hear my word. Putting my word into practice will build a strong foundation for your life. Putting my word into practice will make you able to withstand the storms of life. Will you hear and do my word? Yes Lord, I will. That will be very good.

Lord, I want your word to be my firm foundation. I will make time every day to hear and put your word into practice. Use your word to guide me away from storms in life. Use your word to help me to withstand all storms in life and free me from worry about them. Amen
