Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Healing – Proverbs 4:20-22 – Bring Life – Growing As Disciples

My child, pay attention to what I say. Listen carefully to my words. Don’t lose sight of them. Let them penetrate deep into your heart, for they bring life to those who find them, and healing to their whole body. Proverbs 4:20-22 (NLT)

Penetrate Your Heart

I want to live the life that you have called me to live. I know that you want me to live a full and vibrant and healthy life that bears fruit for your kingdom and brings glory to your name. Yes, I do. I know that on my own, by myself, I cannot live that kind of life. Why is that? I’m sure that you know why. Yes, I do. But, I would like you to tell me why you can’t live a full, vibrant, healthy and fruit bearing life without me and my help. Well, first of all, I have no desire to live my life without you. I have been there and done that before. My life without you was a bruised and battered and broken life. On my own, I walked on a dark and depressing path. I was lost and without hope in the world. You, rescued me from all the that. Yes, I did. You set me on a new path. You bound up my wounds and healed my broken life. You gave me a completely new life to live. Yes, I did.

You know something you haven’t told me yet. What is it? Even though you have given me a completely new life to live in you, I must still live it. What do you mean by that? Well, it is possible, it seems, at least to me, that I could live less than the life you want me to live, if I do not do what you ask of me. You’re right about that. But what, do you have in mind? You want to continue to change me every day as I love, follow and serve you. That’s right. You want to make me to be like you. You want me to think like you thought. You want me to speak like you spoke. You want me to do what you did. Yes, I do. That cannot be a work that I do for myself. That’s right. You are the one that will change my heart and transform my mind. You are the one that will make me able to follow and serve you. I will do that for you. Yes, I know and for that I am very thankful.

How will I change your heart and transform your mind? There is no secret there, your word is very clear on the subject. Yes, it is. You will change my heart and transform my mind as I allow your word to penetrate my heart. This is where I have a responsibility. Yes, you do. I must allow your word to penetrate my heart. That’s right. If I do not allow your word to penetrate my heart, then I will live less than the life that you have called me to live. I don’t want that. No, you don’t. Will you meet with me in my word? Will you allow my word to penetrate your heart and mind and life? Yes Lord, I will. Then you will have my fullness of health in your life and my healing in your body. You will live the life that I have called you to live. You will do what is pleasing to me.

Lord, when I was living apart from you, I was living unhealthy life. I went where I shouldn’t have gone and did what I shouldn’t have done. You rescued me from that life. Thank you that your word is penetrating my heart and giving me a new healthy life in you. Amen

Listen Carefully To My Words

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Promises - Day 215 - Proverbs 4:20-27 - Listen Carefully To My Words - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Promises – Day 215 – Proverbs 4:20-27 – Listen Carefully To My Words – Growing As Disciples

My child, pay attention to what I say. Listen carefully to my words.  Don’t lose sight of them. Let them penetrate deep into your heart, for they bring life to those who find them, and healing to their whole body.  Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life.  Avoid all perverse talk; stay away from corrupt speech.  Look straight ahead, and fix your eyes on what lies before you.  Mark out a straight path for your feet; stay on the safe path.  Don’t get sidetracked; keep your feet from following evil. Proverbs 4:20-27 (NLT)

Penetrate Deeply Into Your Heart

Will you pay attention to what I say? Will you listen carefully to my words? Will you keep your eyes focused intently on my word? Will you allow my word to penetrate deeply into your heart? Will you allow my word to bring life and healing to your entire being? Do you know why I am asking you all these questions? Do you understand the importance of my word?  I think I do know why you are asking me all these questions. I think I do know the importance of your word. I do know why your word is of utmost importance in my life. Let me hear your thoughts. Say what you are thinking out loud. My entire being is under attack. This world is full of temptation and evil. This world and all the evil in it would like nothing better than to sidetrack my life. This world and all the evil in it would like to divert my attention and take me off course, far away from your purpose and plan for my life. The battleground and where I am under attack, is in my heart and mind. I need to take the utmost care in guarding my heart and mind and life from the evil that is in the world. What I allow my heart and mind to feel and think will certainly determine the entire course of my life. What I allow my heart and mind to feel and think will determine the health of my entire being. It will not be nearly enough to guard my heart and mind and steer clear of evil. That is a very good first step. That step alone, however, will not bring me victory. I must also allow your word to deeply penetrate my heart.  I must allow your word to continually change my heart, transform my mind and guide my life. My full attention and entire focus need to be on you and your word. Only then, will I be able to walk a straight and safe path. Only then, will I be able to know and do your will, without being sidetracked. Then I will be able to hear and follow and obey you. Then my life will be filled with the health and wholeness you have for me. You have answered my questions well. Keep on allowing my word to penetrate deeply into your heart. Yes, I will. That will be very good.

Heavenly Father, I will allow your word to penetrate deeply into my heart. Use your word to change my heart, transform my mind and guide my life. Keep me on a straight and safe path so I don’t get sidetracked by evil. I will hear and follow and obey your word. Amen
