Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Becoming Like Christ – Day 269 – Proverbs 15:31 – Listens To A Life Giving Rebuke- Growing As Disciples

He who listens to a life-giving rebuke will be at home among the wise. Proverbs 15:31 (NIV)

I’m Listening

That is exactly what I am doing. What are you doing? I’m listening. What are you listening to? I’m listening to whatever you want to say to me. It would be foolish for me to do otherwise. Yes, it would be very foolish. It sounds like you have quite a bit of experience in this matter, is that true? I have much more experience in being a poor listener and doing what was foolish. I have been strong willed. I have been headstrong. I have been self-reliant. I have been independent. I have self-sufficient. I have been stubborn. I have been something of a “know it all” All of these have been foolish attitudes that I have held at one time or another. For that, I ask your forgiveness. You have my forgiveness. How have all these foolish attitudes impacted your life? I have thought and said and done very foolish things. I have wasted time and energy. I have gone and done what was unfruitful and unrewarding. Basically, these self-reliant and self-absorbed attitudes have led me to go and do my own thing. I have done what was right in my own eyes. What’s wrong with that? I don’t come with wisdom built into me. On my own, I have taken many missteps. I have headed the wrong direction. I have done the wrong things. I have bounced around from one unfruitful endeavor to another. All of this is not good. Yes, I know.

What do you know? How would you like to live your life differently? I want your wisdom. I want to follow your guidance. I want to receive your instruction. I want to be able to know and do your will. That is very good. So, you will listen to me? Yes, I will. So, you will listen to wise and godly people that I bring into your life? Yes, I will. You will let people know that you are open to correction? You will listen to feedback? You will even welcome life-giving rebukes into your life? Yes, I will. Let me be clear, life-giving rebukes may be painful. Life-giving rebukes will make you uncomfortable. Life-giving rebukes may even tend to cause you to become defensive. But you will hear life-giving rebukes? You will welcome life-giving rebukes into your life? Yes, I will.

What will happen to you as you hear and receive and act on life-giving rebukes? I will be changed. I will be made different. Why is that? You will use life-giving rebukes to mold and shape my life. Yes, I will. You will use life-giving rebukes to make me into the person you want me to become. Yes, I will. So, I will hear and receive and act on any and all life-giving rebukes you want to send my way. I’m listening. That will be very good.

Lord, I want to send off signals that I will receive and act on life-giving rebukes. I will not be stubborn. I will not be resistant. I will not be strong-willed and firmly set in my ways. Rather, I will be receptive and welcoming of any life-giving rebukes I need to hear. Amen

Life – Giving Rebuke

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Wisdom - Proverbs 15:31 - Life -Giving Rebuke - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Wisdom – Proverbs 15:31 – Life -Giving Rebuke – Growing As Disciples

He who listens to a life-giving rebuke will be at home among the wise. Proverbs 15:31 (NIV)

Listen

Those words are troubling to me. What words are those? Those first three words, “He who listens” are bothering me. Why is that? I’m pretty sure that I’m not a good listener. I’m a much better talker than a listener. Maybe, I’m not very good at either. But, I do know that I talk a lot when I should be listening more. You can learn much more by listening, than you can by talking. Thinking about what you are going to say rather than carefully listening is not a good habit. I know. That has been my standard operating procedure. Why do you think that is? Do you think what you want to say is more important than what others have to say? That must be it. My own pride has made me more of a talker than a listener. Sometimes, I talk so much I’m sure others must feel that they can’t get a word in edge wise. That’s not good. I know it’s not. Do you want to learn to listen better to others? Do you want to listen more attentively to me? Yes, I want to listen better to others. Yes, I want to listen more attentively to you. That’s good.

You can’t be a poor listener to others and a good listener to me. Those two don’t go together at all. I will remind you that I do often speak into your life through the voices of others. You need to listen very carefully to whatever is being said to you. Don’t be so full of yourself that you cannot hear others or me speaking to you. You need to remember that you don’t know it all. You need to know that you don’t see it all. Others will know and see what you don’t or can’t know or see. You have asked for my wisdom. You have sought my instruction. You want me to lead and guide your life. Yes, I want all these things from you. Then stop being defensive. Be open. Be receptive. Be humble. Be listening. Expect that I will use others to speak into your life. Considering deeply all that is being said to you.

Don’t think that everything you hear will be pleasant and easy to receive. Some of what you hear will be difficult and painful and challenging. Some of what you hear may cut you to the core. Don’t dismiss hard words and painful rebukes as not coming from me. Some of these words will be life giving rebukes that you must hear and receive if you want to grow wise. Will you listen to life giving rebukes so that you will grow wise? Yes Lord, I will.

Lord, I have not been receptive to life-giving rebukes. I have stubbornly refused to listen. I have thought that I was under attack and raised my defenses. I have resisted your speaking into my life. Forgive me. Now, I will listen to all that you want to say to me. Amen

Life-Giving Rebuke

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Life - Proverbs 15:31 - Life-Giving Rebuke - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Life – Proverbs 15:31 – Life-Giving Rebuke – Growing As Disciples

He who listens to a life-giving rebuke will be at home among the wise. Proverbs 15:31 (NIV)

Constructive Criticism

You have heard words of constructive criticism before haven’t you? Yes, I have. That’s a modern way to say what is called a life-giving rebuke. It’s probably not a good translation of my word. I don’t think you understand the danger of not accepting a life-giving rebuke when you call it constructive criticism. I’m not sure what you mean. Do you think accepting or rejecting constructive criticism is an option on your part? Is constructive criticism like feedback that you can choose to accept or reject? Yes, I guess so. That’s a real problem then. Why is that? I often speak through others to you. I will often give you wisdom through the words of others. Sometimes that wisdom will be a matter of life and death. Do you want to pick and choose from the wisdom that I want to speak into your life? No, I don’t. I want all the wisdom that you will give to me. Yes, I know.

Not every criticism you hear will be constructive. Not every constructive criticism will come from me. Not every constructive criticism will be like a life-giving rebuke. Some criticism may look like constructive criticism but will be a form of condemnation that will try to tear you down. The devil is very good at using so called constructive criticism to attack you with words that can steal, kill, and destroy life. What do all my comments suggest to you? I need to listen very carefully to what I have called constructive criticism and what you call a life-giving rebuke. I need to carefully consider all the words that are being spoken to me. When you listen what will you be trying to hear? When I listen I will be trying to hear all the wisdom that you want to speak into my life. As you listen what must you not do? As I listen I must not react in a way that quickly rejects what others have to say to me. Why is that? I know that you have often spoken into my life through the words of others. Yes, I have.

How open are you to listening to constructive criticism or life-giving rebukes from others? What is your first response to difficult and challenging words that others have to say to you? I want to be completely open to how you speak to me through the words of others. I know that I have not been completely open to hearing difficult words of constructive criticism or life-giving rebuke. That is a very dangerous position to be in. Why is that? If others are afraid to take a chance to give you constructive criticism or life-giving rebukes then they won’t speak up. How you react to the words of others will either give or deny them the opportunity and permission to offer life-giving help to you. Do you want to limit the help you receive from others? No, I do not. Do you want to limit one of the ways that I want to speak wisdom into your life? No, I do not. Then you must be ready to listen to and ready to act on constructive criticism and life-giving rebukes that come your way. Is that what you will do? Yes Lord, it is.

Lord, I haven’t always been receptive to hearing and acting on words of constructive criticism. I know you often speak to me through the voices of others. Help me to hear all that you want to say to me so I can grow in your wisdom. Amen
