This Is The Day

This is the day that the LORD has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it. Psalm 118:24 (ESV)

Today Is A Gift

That is what today is. What is today? Today is a gift. Why is today a gift? You have given me this day to live with and for you. I am here. I am alive. I am living and breathing. You have filled me with your Holy Spirit. You want to work in and through me today. You want to accomplish your purposes and fulfill your plans in my life today. I may not have tomorrow. But, I have today. I have right now. I can love and follow and serve you with all that is within me. I can walk through life with you today. Yes, today is a gift. I am glad that you have come to this realization. It is important that you be present today. Give thanks for today. Be joyful for this day that I have given to you. Remain attentive to me today. Listen to my voice. Follow me to where I lead you. Do what I ask of you. Allow me to work in and through you today.

How can I make the best use of today? That is a very good question. Maybe you should carry that question with you throughout today. What does that mean? Can’t you ask if what you are giving yourself to is the best use of this day that I have given to you? Couldn’t you allow this question to guide your steps throughout your day? Let me ask you a question. Go ahead, I’m listening. That question, “How can I make the best use of today?”, who are you asking for an answer? I’m not sure what you mean. Are you asking yourself, or are you asking me? That is a good question. Why is that? I need wisdom and help from you to know how to best use the day that you have given to me. I need your help. I want and need to rely on you. So, will you keep on asking how you can best use the gift of today that I have given to you? Yes Lord, I will. That will be very good.

Lord, thank you for the beautiful gift of this day. Fill me with joy and gladness as I live this day with and for you. Use me to accomplish your purposes and fulfill your plans today. Help me to be fully attentive to you as I love, follow, and serve you today. Amen

Rejoice And Be Glad

Is there anything special about this day? This is a drab and dreary day for many. They will get up to go through the same motions that are no different than any other day. They will put one foot in front of the other to take steps to get done what they feel they must do before their day ends. They have no lasting hope or joy. Their lives are filled with quiet desperation. A completed “to do list” brings them no satisfaction because they know that another list will be waiting for them to begin again in the morning. They are not changing and becoming what they thought and dreamed they might one day become. Do you know anyone that is living this kind of drab and dreary hopeless kind of life?

I am embarrassed to say that I have lived this dreary and hopeless kind of life. I have had my eyes entirely focused on what I thought I must get done. I have raced wearily from one task to another. I have felt the hopelessness of a life without apparent meaning. These thoughts and experiences are not completely foreign to me.

How about now? Have you allowed yourself to become weary and worn out? In your weariness have you lost your joy and felt hopeless? When you say “now” do you mean today or in a recent season of my life? Are you asking me if I am susceptible to feeling hopeless or joyless even as one of your followers? Yes, I am.

You know the answer to that. Yes, I do. There are days that I feel like locking the door, disconnecting the phone and pulling the covers over my head. On those days, I don’t want to go anywhere or do anything. If I didn’t see another person on those days it would be just fine with me.

Is today anything like that? Yes, as a matter of fact it is. What would you have to say if I told you that today is a day that I made for you? How would you respond to me if I asked you to rejoice and be glad in today? I might mumble and grumble about that idea.

You have described a day like today as a “crash and burn” day. Yes, I have. How did you reach the low point of today? I have been racing through life going from one thing to another. I’ve been living as if everything depends on me. I’ve looked every direction except up. I’ve trusted in everything and everyone other than you. I have not relied on your strength. I have not asked for your help. So, here I am, at a complete stop, running on empty. Yes, I can see that.

Is today a good day or a bad day? I know that it is a good day. Why is that? I know that it is a good day because you have gotten my attention. You want me to look to you for all that I need. You want me to place all my trust in you. You want me to rely on you and your strength. Yes, I do. You want me to rejoice in this day that you have made for me to live with and for you. Yes, I do.

Lord, thank you for making this day for me to live for you. Guide my steps and guard my path as I follow and obey you. Help me to rejoice and be glad as I proclaim your goodness to others that I will meet today. I love you. Amen

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Let Us – Psalm 118:24 – Rejoice And Be Glad – Growing As Disciples

This is the day the LORD has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it. Psalm 118:24 (NIV)

 Today Is A Gift

You have today. Today is a day that I made. How will you use it? Are you glad that I made today. Do you have anything to be glad and rejoice about today? Will you allow this day to be a special day? How will you use this day that I have given to you? Those are very good questions. Why do you think so? I don’t normally think about any one day as more important or special than another. Is that a good thing? Do you consider any days to be special?  I consider birthdays, anniversaries and holidays to be special days. Obviously, Christmas and Easter are very special days. You like to celebrate on all those days?  Yes, I do. Lets talk more about your average every day of the week kind of days. You don’t celebrate the average every day of the week kind of days do you? No, I don’t. What do you do on average every day of the week kind of days? I put one foot in front of the other and keep on doing what must be done. That sounds boring, routine and very depressing. Do you think that is the way that I want you to live? I’m not sure what you mean. I want your life to be exciting. I want you to consider the beauty and possibilities of each day that I have given to you. Do you think I want you to trudge through life with your head down working to accomplish your endless “to do” lists? No, I suppose not. I want you to look up. I want you to consider how I might use you today. I want you to wonder about where I might lead you to do what I might ask of you. I want you to live in the conscious awareness of my presence. Can you live in an intimate and joyful relationship with me as your trudge through life with your head down, putting one foot in front of the other, doing what you think must be done? No, I suppose not. You like receiving gifts, don’t you? Yes, I do. How do you feel when you are about to receive a gift? When I am about to receive a gift I am full of anticipation. I am excited and energized by the wonder and mystery of an unknown gift. Do you know where I am headed with my questions? I think so. Each day I give you is a gift.  I want you to approach each day with anticipation. I want you to be excited and energized and filled with wonder as you begin each day with me. I want you to be glad and rejoice in the opportunities that I will bring to you in the gift of each new day. Do you think you can do what I am asking of you? Yes Lord, I can. I will trust and rely on you as I walk with you in each new day that you have given to me.

Lord, this is the day you have made. I will rejoice and be glad in it. You have been my refuge in storms. In my weakness you are my strength. You have heard my prayers. You have guarded and guided my life. I will trust you and rely on your for all I need. Amen
