Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Promises – Day 126 – Psalm 5:1-3- You Hear My Voice- Growing As Disciples

Give ear to my words, O LORD, consider my sighing.  Listen to my cry for help, my King and my God, for to you I pray.  In the morning, O LORD, you hear my voice; in the morning I lay my requests before you and wait in expectation. Psalm 5:1-3 (NIV)

Hear You

Do you believe that I will hear you? Do you know that I will answer your prayers? Yes, I believe that you will hear and answer my prayers. Do you have any doubts about my statement? I don’t doubt your statement. I do have a question about your statement. Go ahead, I’m listening. If you believe that I will hear and answer your prayer requests why don’t you lay more of them before me? That is a very good question, for which, I have no good answer. Let me hear your less than good answers. It will be helpful for you to uncover and expose reasons why you don’t lay all your needs before me. Why is that? Uncovering and exposing your less than good reasons for not praying to me will be a first step toward eliminating them from your life. Alright, here goes. I’m not proud to admit that sometimes, I think I can handle my problems by myself, without your help. So, you are sometimes self-reliant? Yes, that’s it. What do you think about your being self-reliant? It’s not good. I’m sure that my self-reliance is rooted in my being proud. How so? I must think that I can and should be able to handle my problems by myself. How has that worked out for you? Relying on myself has not brought about good results. I have made foolish mistakes. I have taken dumb missteps. I have sinned against you by going and doing what was not your will. I really do need your help. Yes, you do, and I am ready to hear your prayers and give you my help. For that I am thankful and grateful. Name another reason why you haven’t laid your prayer requests for me. In times past, I have not set aside a specific time and place to meet with you in prayer. Why is that a problem? How is that a hindrance? Life is busy. Life is noisy. Life is distracting. If I don’t have a set time and place to meet with you in prayer, it likely will not happen. A day without prayer can become week, a week can become a month, a month can become a year, and a year could become a life without prayer. That I don’t want. That will not happen to me. Why is that? Now, I have set a time and place to meet with you in prayer. Yes, and that is very good. What do you now need to learn as you draw near to me in prayer? I now need to pour my heart out to you in prayer. I now need to hold nothing back when I am praying to you. I now need to know that no prayer is too small or too large to pray to you. You will delight in hearing all my prayers. Yes, I will. Keep on meeting with me. Keep on pouring your heart out to me. Keep on laying all your prayers before me. Yes, I will. That will be very good. I will hear you. Thank you, Lord.

Lord, I will lay my requests before you in the morning. I will rely on your help and protection. Be my refuge. Shield me from attacks. Hear my voice as I cry out to you. Thank you for hearing and answering my prayers. I will wait before you in expectation. Amen

In The Morning You Hear My Voice

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Becoming Like Christ - Day 188 - Psalm 5:1-3 - In The Morning You Hear My Voice - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Becoming Like Christ – Day 188 – Psalm 5:1-3 – In The Morning You Hear My Voice – Growing As Disciples

Give ear to my words, O LORD, consider my sighing. Listen to my cry for help, my King and my God, for to you I pray. In the morning, O LORD, you hear my voice; in the morning I lay my requests before you and wait in expectation. Psalm 5:1-3 (NIV)

Time And Place

I have set a time and a place to meet with you. I have you firmly on my schedule. I have made meeting with you the absolute priority of my life. I will not let a day go by that I have not met with you. Why is that? Why am I on your schedule? I get distracted. I lose track of what is vitally important. Many times, what has seemed to be urgent but is ultimately unimportant has pushed aside what is actually urgent and of ultimate importance. You are on my schedule, first and foremost, because I have nothing of higher priority or of greater importance than meeting with you. I have not squeezed you into my schedule. No, not at all, everything else in my life comes after and is built around my meeting with you. That is very good.

I have more to say about meeting with you. I’m listening. Having you on my schedule does not mean that once we have met, we are done meeting for the day. Having you on my schedule, in the morning, is the beginning of what I hope will be our dialogue of prayer together throughout each moment of my day. Our meeting together in the morning is the way that I want to start my day with my heart and mind and life focused on you. I know that you will help me to remain attentive to you throughout my day. I will do that for you.

What do you hope to accomplish as you meet with me in prayer? What is your goal? What is your hope? What is your dream? What is your desire? I am glad that you have asked me these questions. It is my hope and dream and desire to know and to love and to follow and serve you will all my heart and mind and soul and strength. I want to live my life with and for you. I want to walk in an intimate relationship with you. I want to be able to know and do your will. I want to live the life that you have called me to live. Do you believe that I will hear and answer these prayerful desires of your heart? Yes, I believe you will answer these prayerful desires of my heart far beyond what I could ask for or even imagine. It is good that you believe I will hear and answer these prayerful desires of your heart. Why is that? Because this is exactly what I will do for you. Thank you, Lord.

Lord, I will make our time together the absolute priority of my life. Transform my heart and mind and life as I meet with you in prayer. Thank you, for hearing and answering my prayers as I expectantly lay them before you. Thank you for your goodness to me. Amen

Key Question… When are you speaking up in prayer and making your voice known to God?

Living It Out… Make it your consistent daily pattern to meet in prayer with the Lord.

Seeing It Happen… Have faith that the Lord will hear and answer your prayers as you make them known to Him.

Get Ready To Share… Share with another person or your small group how the Lord has heard and answered your prayers.

Prayer To Bless Others… May you lay all your prayers before the Lord.

Wait In Expectation

The Prayer Filled Life – Day 80 – Psalm 5-1-3 – Wait In Expectation – Growing As Disciples

Give ear to my words, O LORD, consider my sighing.  Listen to my cry for help, my King and my God, for to you I pray.  In the morning, O LORD, you hear my voice; in the morning I lay my requests before you and wait in expectation. Psalm 5:1-3 (NIV)

In The Morning

When will you meet with me? When will you turn your heart felt sighs into prayers to me? When will you cry out to me for help? When will I hear your voice? When will you come into my house? When will you enter my temple? When will you bow down before me? When will you take refuge in me? When will you be glad and sing joyfully to me? When will you allow me to guide you on a straight path? When will you allow me to bless you? When will you allow my favor to surround you like a shield? When will you allow me to hear and answer your prayers? You want to do all these things for me? If I did not want to do these things for you, would I bother to ask you these questions? No. I’m sure not. Do you believe that I want to do these things for you? Yes, I do. Then do you have an answer for my questions? In the morning I will meet with you. Then and there and throughout all the moments of my day, I will turn my sighs into prayers to you. You will hear my crying out to you. You will hear me asking for your help. I will come to rely on you. I will place all my faith and hope and trust in you. I will humbly come into your presence. I will bow down before you. I will submit my heart and mind and life to you. I will have no need to worry. I will not be filled with anxiety. You will be my refuge. You will be my shelter in every storm. I will be filled with joy and gladness because I know that you will be with me to help me. You will help me to walk a straight path as I love and follow and serve you. You will help me to live a life that is pleasing to you. You will help me to know and do what is right so I can be a bright and bold witness for you in the darkness of this world. You will bless my life with your kindness and mercy and love. Your favor will rest on me and surround me like a shield. You will hear and answer my prayers. Yes, I will do all these things for you. Thank you, Lord.

Lord, I will meet with you in the morning. I will humbly bow down in prayer to you. I will turn the sighs into prayers to you. I will expectantly wait for you to answer my prayers. Help me to walk a straight path with you. Be a shield of protection around me. Amen

Wait In Expectation

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Prayer - Psalm 5:1-3 - Wait In Expectation - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Prayer – Psalm 5:1-3 – Wait In Expectation – Growing As Disciples

Give ear to my words, O LORD, consider my sighing. Listen to my cry for help, my King and my God, for to you I pray. In the morning, O LORD, you hear my voice; in the morning I lay my requests before you and wait in expectation. Psalm 5:1-3 (NIV)

Meeting

How will you begin your day? Will you start your day with me? Will I hear from you in the morning? Will you come to rely on me? Will you lay your requests before me? Will you wait patiently and expectantly for me to hear and answer your prayers? Will you begin your day by focusing your heart and mind and life on me? What is the alternative? Do you want to live out the alternative? No, I don’t think so. No, I’m certain that I don’t want to live out the alternative. I do think it would be very helpful for me to consider the alternative. Yes, I do too. Let me hear you describe the alternative.

I am somewhat of an expert at living the alternative to what your questions suggest. How so? I have stayed up late and gotten up even later. I have overslept. I have hurried to get started. I have raced to get going. I have been frazzled and harried and rushed to get to where I needed to be without being late. My heart and mind and life have arrived unfocused and scattered. I have lacked direction. I have had no purpose and plan. But, I have arrived. Now what, I have asked myself. Who knows, I have wondered. At least, I got here almost on time. At least, no one has noticed my lack of preparation. At least, no one has noticed that I have no purpose and plan. At least, no one knows that I have not been ready to know and do your will. You think so? No, not really. You have noticed. I have noticed. It is foolish to think that others have not noticed. That’s true.

I hate living that kind of life. I hate living an unfocused and scattered and unfruitful life. I want to know and do your will. I want to have my heart and mind and life focused on you. I want to meet with you in the morning. I want to receive your instructions. I want to follow your guidance. I want to lay my requests before you. I want to wait patiently and expectantly for you to hear and answer my prayers. What will you do? I will meet with you in the morning. I will give my day to you. I will ask you to guide me. I will do what you ask of me. I will listen to your voice as you listen to mine. That will be very good.

Lord, in the morning I will meet with you. In the morning, I will come to you. In the morning, I will give my day to you. You will hear my cry. You will know I am relying on you. I will lay my requests before you. I will wait for you to hear and answer my prayers. Amen
