Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Spiritual Warfare – Ephesians 6:13-14 – Stand Your Ground – Growing As Disciples

Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, Ephesians 6:13-14 (NIV)

Stand

That’s exactly what I want to do. What do you want to do? I want to be able to stand my ground. I want to be able to stand against evil. I want to be able resist temptation. How will you be able to do that? Not with my own power and strength, that is for sure. That sounds like the voice of experience. It is. I have failed miserably trying to stand against evil and resist temptation. Why is that? I am weak. I desperately need your help. Yes, you do. Is that what you are asking for? Are you asking me to make you able to stand against evil and resist temptation? Yes, I am. That’s good. I do have a question for you. Go ahead, ask me, I’m listening.

Why do you want to stand against evil and resist temptation? That seems like an odd question, coming for you. Why is that? Don’t you want me to stand against evil and resist temptation? Yes, I most certainly do want you to stand against evil and resist temptation. But, I want to know what you want. That is a good question. Why do you think so? Well, at one time I think my heart and mind were divided. How so? If I were to be honest with you and with myself, I would say that a part of me enjoyed sinning. A part of me did not fully want to stand against evil and resist temptation. For a time it was fun to enjoy sin. It was pleasurable to give into temptation by engaging in evil. What changed your heart and mind? The pleasures of sin are for a very short time. The long term wages of sin is death. Sin and evil and temptation caught up with me. How so? I began to feel the painful sting of sin. A life that keeps on sinning becomes a bruised and battered and broken life. There is no joy in a life of giving into temptation by engaging in evil. No, there is not.

So, the brokenness of your life is what caused you to completely change your mind about engaging in the short term pleasures of sin? No, I wouldn’t say so. What would you say? I would say that the sting of sin and the death it brought into my life got my attention. What really caused me to want to resist evil and stand against temptation was something else that I wanted. What was that? I wanted to love you with all my heart and mind and soul and strength. You first loved me. I wanted to love you back. I have come to want what you want. I want to live the life that you have called me to live. I want to go where you guide me. I want to do what you ask of me. I want to bear fruit for your kingdom and bring glory to your name. So, you are asking me to help you to put on my full armor so you can stand against evil and resist temptation, so you can be used by me as my witness in the world. That’s right. That is very good. I will hear and answer your prayer.

Lord, I cannot stand against evil and resist temptation solely with my own power and strength. If I rely solely on myself, I will certainly fail. I need your help. I will put on your full armor. I will rely on you. Make me able to stand against evil and resist temptation. Amen

Put On The Full Armor Of God

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Discipleship - Ephesians 6:10-13 - Put On The Full Armor Of God - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Discipleship – Ephesians 6:10-13 – Put On The Full Armor Of God – Growing As Disciples

Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Ephesians 6:10-13 (NIV)

Stand Your Ground

Don’t be surprised. Don’t be surprised about what? There are two things that I don’t want you to be surprised about. First, don’t be surprised that many of your battles in life will not be against flesh and blood. You may think that a battle is strictly against flesh and blood, in many case that will be incorrect. It would be better to assume that a battle you are facing is against spiritual forces of evil in the world, rather than against flesh and blood. You may think that conflicting worldly thoughts, opinions and values are simply someone’s worldly belief system. That would also be incorrect. The evil ruler of this world has a strong grip on the unguarded thoughts and values and opinions that are firmly held by many in this world. So, you will need to think and act and move differently against evil in this world. How so? You will not be able to rely on the strength of any human effort to win battles over spiritual evil that is in the world. You must watch and pray. You must rely on me. You must rely on my power and strength to give you victories over evil that is in the world. Will you rely on me? Yes Lord, I will rely on you. That will be very good.

What else don’t you want me to be surprised about? I don’t want you to be surprised when you face battles with evil in the world. Don’t think that they will be rare. Don’t be surprised when they come upon you. Be ready, at all times, to face battles with the devil and all his evil in the world. How can I always be ready to face the devil and his evil in the world? You must put on the full armor that I have given to you. Live in the truth that you have in me. Allow the truth you have in me to continue to keep you free from evil. Live and walk in my truth. Don’t allow yourself to become entangled in deceitful evil. Live the righteous life that I have called you to live. Don’t go where you shouldn’t go. Don’t do what you shouldn’t do. Live out the gospel. Be always ready to share the hope you have in me. Let your faith in me be a shield to protect you from the world. Don’t allow fiery arrows of doubt to come near you. Let your heart and mind and life be guarded and guided by my word. Allow my word to guide the thoughts of your mind, words of your mouth and deeds of your life. Allow my Spirit to use my word to fight in you, with you, for you and through you. Finally keep watch. Keep praying. Pray for yourself. Pray for others. Live a life of prayer as you walk through life with me. These things, I will do with all my heart and mind and soul and strength. Then you will be able to stand your ground. Then you will live and walk in victory. That will be very good.

Lord, I know I am not fighting solely against flesh and blood. I know I am certain to come under attack of spiritual evil. Help me to put on your full armor. Protect me against attack. Make me able to stand against evil. Fight in me, with me, for me and through me. Amen

Stand Against The Devil’s Schemes

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - So That - Ephesians 6:11 - Stand Against The Devil's Schemes - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide- So That – Ephesians 6:11 – Stand Against The Devil’s Schemes – Growing As Disciples

Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes.  Ephesians 6:11 (NIV)

Take Your Stand

You are in a battle. You are in a fight. You are in a war in this life.  Do you know why this is important for you to know? If I am in a battle and in a fight and in a war in this life, I must be ready to stand and fight. Are you ready to stand and fight? Who is my enemy and what is he like? Your enemy is the devil and all of his evil. Then I would say, I am not ready for the battle. I am not strong enough to fight. Only you can prepare me for warfare. Only you can make me able to stand and fight.

You must know three things in preparing for battle. You must know three things that will make you ready for the fight. What’s that? You must know that you are in a war. You must be on guard and vigilant. Your enemy might attack and strike you at any time. Never forget that. Never let down your guard. Always be vigilant. Yes Lord, I will remain on guard. I will be vigilant. What else? You must know your enemy and his evil schemes. The devil will attack you where and when you are weakest. He will look for an opportune time. Sometime you will see him coming. Sometime he will try to take you by surprise. You know where you are weakest. Do you know what you should not be doing? Do you know where you should not be? Don’t let the devil find you in his evil and on his ground. Stay away from sin and darkness. Live and walk in the light with me. Yes Lord, I will stay away from evil and darkness. I will be aware of the devil and his evil schemes. I will walk in the light with you. What else? You must know that you are not ready for battle and cannot stand and fight. You must allow me to make you ready. I will train you for battle. I will make you ready for war. You must rely on me to make you strong. You must receive my mighty power. How will I do that? You must put on the full armor that I will give to you. You will take up my shield of faith. You will grab a hold of the sword of my Spirit. Your head will be covered with the helmet of my salvation. Your heart will be protected with my breastplate of righteousness.   The belt of truth will be buckled around your waist. Your feet will wear the gospel of peace. You will be in constant prayer as you remain watchful, ready and on guard. Then you will be able to take your stand to fight against the devil and all his evil schemes. You will not falter. You will not fall. I will be with you in the fight.

Lord, I know I am in a battle and engaged in warfare against the devil. I will put on the full armor you have given to me. I will receive all your training. Only you can prepare me for battle and make me able to stand and fight against the devil and all his evil. Amen
