Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – The Sacramental Life – Day 349 – Romans 8-37-39 – Overwhelming Victory – Growing As Disciples

No, despite all these things, overwhelming victory is ours through Christ, who loved us. And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love.  No power in the sky above or in the earth below—indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord.                Romans 8:37-39 (NLT)

Overwhelming Victory

That certainly would be an overwhelming victory for me. What would be an overwhelming victory for you? If I were to not be afraid about today or worry about tomorrow that would be an overwhelming victory for me. Why is that? All my life I have been filled with fear and worry. Do you know why you have been filled with fear and worry? Please don’t think or say that you have had a lot to be fearful and worried about, that would be an incorrect answer. I do know why I have been fearful and worried. You do? Yes, I do. Let me hear your thoughts. Pride has filled me with fear and worry. To some that may seem like an odd answer. Most would see no connection between pride and fear and worry. What connection do you see? Pride tells me that I am in control. Pride tells me to rely on myself to solve all my problems. Pride tells me that by my own efforts I can work my way out of fear and worry. How has relying on yourself worked out for you? How often have you been able to work yourself out of fear and worry? I have never been able to work myself out of fear and worry. My self-reliant efforts have only served to cause me greater fear and more worry. That is true.

What is the real solution to your fear and worry? Faith is the solution to my fear and worry. How so? You have told me that you love me. You have said that because of your love for me, I will be more than a conqueror and live-in overwhelming victory. Your love will for me will overcome fear and doubt and worry. Your love for me will conqueror the powers of hell and even death itself. There is nothing in life or even in death that your love for me has not and will not defeat. Nothing can or ever will separate me from your love. What you are saying couldn’t be truer.

What do you need from me? I need for you to increase my faith in you. I need you to help me to know your love more fully. I need for you to help me to live in your love more completely. What will you do? I will place all my faith and hope and trust in you. I will stop pridefully relying on myself by trying to work my way out of fear and worry. That will be very good. I will hear and answer your prayer. I will help you to know my love more fully and to live in my love more completely. Thank you, Lord.

Lord, I know you love me without reservation. I know you love me beyond all measure. Help me to know your love more fully. Help me to live in your love more completely. Help me to live without worry or fear because I know your love will always be with me. Amen

More Than Conquerors

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Spiritual Warfare – Romans 8:37-39 – More Than Conquerors – Growing As Disciples

No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 8:37-39 (NIV)

More Than A Conqueror

I have not always felt like I am more than a conqueror. It has not often seemed like I have been walking in victory. I have faced many depressing and discouraging and defeating circumstances. I have gone through many crushing trials. I have suffered through accusations. I have received condemnation. I have been under attack. Does any of this surprise you? Shouldn’t these things surprise me? You tell me. Your question leads me to think that none of these things should surprise me. Why is that? Well, I do live in a broken world. I live in a world that has been devastatingly damaged by sin. Nothing in this world is quite like you intended it to be when you created it. There is pain and suffering in this world. There is darkness and evil in this world. There is accusation and condemnation in this world. I could go on and on. No need. Your question has helped remind me of the kind of world I live in.  t would be foolish to think that I might be exempt from the pain and suffering that is part of this life. Why is that? You experienced pain and suffering in this life. You were attacked by every evil of this world. Yes, I was. You were not exempt from the worst that this world has to offer. No, I was not.

Do you wonder where I am when you are going through the difficulties of life? I did at one time. I don’t any more. Why is that? I have learned to draw near to you when I am going through the trials of life. I have learned that you are with me to help me. You will lead me through every trial and trouble I will go through. You will bring good out of the worst that life has to offer. There is no difficulty that I will go through that you can’t use to make me to be more like you. You have and will continue to use every darkness in life to make me shine brightly for you. Your love will sustain and strengthen me. Your favor will rest on me. You will make me to be more than a conqueror as I come to rely on you. Yes, I will. Yes, I am. Yes, I have.

Lord, you have been with me as I have gone through discouraging, and defeating circumstances. In great difficulty, you have been with me to help me. You have strengthened me. You have shown me your love and favor. You have led me into your victory. Amen
