Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Knowing God – Genesis 12:1 – Leave Your Country – Growing As Disciples

The LORD had said to Abram, “Leave your country, your people and your father’s household and go to the land I will show you. Genesis 12:1 (NIV)

Go And Do

Do you need a road map? Must you know every detail? Would you like to consider every twist and turn and up and down of your journey before you take your very first step? Those are very hard questions. I’m not a big fan of unpleasant surprises. I’d like to know where the hazards are in life so I can go around them. I would like to eliminate all the bumps and dips and holes in the road so I don’t lose my balance and fall into them. Making an informed decision before I start my journey doesn’t sound like a bad idea to me. So, if you knew the road would be long and the journey difficult would you take your very first step? What do you think? You tell me.

I am on a journey with you right now. Yes, you are. I have to tell you that my journey has not been a piece of cake. No, it has not. I have had my share of pain and suffering and hardship and loss since I started following you. Yes, you have. What are you trying to tell me? Never once have I wanted to quit following you. Never once have I given up on the idea of living my life with and for you. I have never followed you perfectly. I have taken wrong turns. I have made mistakes. I have sinned against you. You have always forgiven me, picked me up and helped me to continue on in my journey with you. Yes, I have.

I don’t recall asking for any directions when I started following you. No, you did not. I find that surprising. Why is that? I do want a road map. I do want to know every detail. I would like to know the first and last step and every one in between. I would like to know that the journey is worth it before I set out. Why did you set out? Why did you take the first step? Has the journey been worth it? You have been my road map. I am following you. You are guiding each one of my steps. You are worthy of all my faith and trust. All my hope is in you. You are my Savior and Lord. Knowing and loving and following you is my prize. You are worth it. I want to do whatever pleases you. I have received all that I have ever wanted in you before I ever took my very first step. I have a new life in you both now and forever. Yes, you do.

Why are we having this conversation now? Do you still want to follow me? Yes Lord, I do. Will you go and do all that I ask of you? Yes Lord, I will. I will be with you to help you. Follow me.

Lord, I will go and do whatever you ask of me. I don’t need a lot of the details. It is enough to know that you are asking me to go and do something for you. Grow my faith and help me to know you better as I follow and serve you.  Amen

Key Question… When has God called you to go and do something for Him without giving you a lot of the details?

Living It Out…  Say yes to God by going and doing whatever He has called you to do for Him.

Seeing It Happen… Have faith that God will bless your life and the lives of others as you go and do what He has called you to do for Him.

Get Ready To Share…   Share with another person or your small group how God has used you to bless the lives of others as you serve Him.

Prayer To Bless Others…  May you go and do what God asks you to do so that He can bless your life and the lives of others.

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Rhythms – Genesis 12:1 – Leave – Go – Growing As Disciples

The LORD had said to Abram, “Leave your country, your people and your father’s household and go to the land I will show you. Genesis 12:1 (NIV)

Comfort Zone

You like to stay in your comfort zone. You don’t like to feel the discomfort of a difficult challenge. You would like to stay right where you are, right now. What you have now is familiar. What you have now is easy. You are feeling no pain, but making no gains. What do you mean by that? Have I said anything that has shocked you? Have I said anything that is untrue? No, I’m sure that you have said what is true. But, your last statement is the one that got my attention. You said that I was feeling no pain and making no gains. Yes, that is what I said. I would like you to say more about that. Making no gains is the troubling part of my statement, isn’t it? Yes, it is. You don’t want to live a life that is making no gains, do you? No, I want to live an abundant and fruitful life for you. Yes, I knew that my statement would get your full attention. I would be happy to say more on the subject. I will listen attentively to every one of your words.

You want your life to be blessed to be a blessing to others. You want me to use you in significant ways. You want to be able to bear an abundance of fruit for my kingdom and bring glory to my name. You want to do all the good works that I have prepared in advance for you to do. You don’t want any of your gifts and talents and resources and abilities to go unused. You want to boldly go where I guide you, to powerful do all that I ask of you. One day you most want to hear me say, “Well done, good and faithful servant.” Have I said anything that is not true? Do you want all these things? Do you want to serve me with all your heart and mind and soul and strength? Yes Lord, I want all these things. There is not one word of yours that I would change. This is exactly the kind of life that I want to live as I follow and serve you. Are you sure? What do you mean by asking me that? If you want to go boldly where I guide you and powerfully do all that I ask of you, then you cannot stay in your comfort zone. You must be willing to leave the comfortable and familiar to go to the challenging and unknown. You must follow me to where I lead you and do all that I ask of you. I’m assuming that all of this will be well outside of my comfort zone. You got that right. Are you ready and willing to leave your comfort zone to boldly go and do all that I ask of you? Yes Lord, I am.

Lord, I like being comfortable and living in the familiar. I know I have resisted your call to leave the familiar to go to the unknown. Forgive me. Now, I rely on you, as I go to where you guide me to do all that you ask of me. Use my life as a blessing to others. Amen

Bless – Blessing

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Rhythms - Genesis 12:1-3 - Bless - Blessing - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Rhythms – Genesis 12:1-3 – Bless – Blessing – Growing As Disciples

The LORD had said to Abram, “Leave your country, your people and your father’s household and go to the land I will show you. “I will make you into a great nation and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you.” Genesis 12:1-3 (NIV)

Bless You

My hand is on you. I am blessing your life. I will open doors of opportunity for you to go and do new and different things for me. Just as I have blessed your life so also I will use your life to bless the lives of others. That sounds very interesting and exciting. I can hardly wait. What are the details? Where do you want to send me? How do you want to use me? How will you prepare me to do all that you will ask of me? Those are all good questions. I will give you all you need to know when you need to know it. There will be no road map? I will not receive a detailed step-by-step plan in advance? Have I ever given you a detailed step-by-step plan in the past? No, you have not. Well, don’t expect one in the future either. All you will need to do is to follow me to where I lead you to do all that I ask of you. That’s all I’ll get? Isn’t following my leading enough for you? Yes, following your leading is enough for me. As you follow my leading and listen for my instructions I will show you my will and help you to walk in my ways. I will use you according to my purposes and plans. You can be sure and certain of that. I will follow you. I will listen to all that you have to say to me. That’s good.

Why do you think I have blessed your life? I’m not sure what you mean. Have I blessed you so that you alone can benefit? Are you meant to be the sole beneficiary of my blessing? No, I doubt that. I know that it is your joy to bless my life. Why is that? You enjoy blessing my life because I am your child. You love me. Yes, I do love you. You are my child. It does bring me great joy to bless your life. I think it gives you even greater joy to see me share your blessings with others. You want to use me as your blessing to others in this world. Yes, I do. You got that right. Knowing this, what question might you ask me? I will ask you how you want me to share your blessings with others. That’s right. You will open up doors of opportunity for me to share your blessings with others. Yes, I will. I will be looking. I will be waiting. I will be ready for you to use me. That will be every good.

Lord, I have not always recognized a door of opportunity you have opened before me. I have had questions and wanted more details. A detailed road map would have been nice. Forgive me. You have blessed my life and called me to be a blessing. I will go now. Amen

I Will Bless You

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Promises - Day 217 - Genesis 12:1-3 - I Will Bless You - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Promises – Day 217 – Genesis 12:1-3 – I Will Bless You – Growing As Disciples

The LORD had said to Abram, “Leave your native country, your relatives, and your father’s family, and go to the land that I will show you.  I will make you into a great nation. I will bless you and make you famous, and you will be a blessing to others.  I will bless those who bless you and curse those who treat you with contempt. All the families on earth will be blessed through you.” Genesis 12:1-3 (NLT)

Go And Do What I Ask

Will you listen to me? Will you go and do what I ask of you? Will you leave the comfortable and familiar to go and do what I ask of you, even it is uncomfortable and unfamiliar? Don’t answer me too quickly. Know that I will not unfold a complete and detailed road map before you. You will need to follow me. You will need to trust me. You will need to rely on me. I will take you along a path on which you have never traveled. I will have you do what you have never done. You will not have an opportunity to reason with me, to weigh the pros and cons of following and obeying me. You will have to decide if you are willing to place all your faith and hope and trust in me without your fully understanding where I am taking you or what I am asking of you. Now, let’s talk. How does all this sound to you? Do you want my honest answer? Yes, I want your honest answer. All of this sounds scary to me. This sounds difficult and demanding and challenging. Yes, it is all of that, and more. But I need to ask myself some questions. Like what?  Where would I go and what would I do if I decided not to follow and serve you? Where would my life end up if I stopped following and serving you? Wouldn’t my life be filled with regret if I didn’t keep moving forward with you? Aren’t you about to do something significant in and through my life if I say yes to going and doing what you ask of me? Won’t my faith grow stronger as I follow and serve you? Won’t you help me to go and do what you ask of me? Won’t my life be blessed as I allow you to use me? Won’t I be a blessing to others as you work in and through me? You are asking a lot of very good questions. Yes, and there is no doubt about what I will do. What’s that? I will go and do all that you ask of me. That will be very good. Thank you, Lord, for calling me to go and do what you ask of me.

Lord, help me to go and do what you ask of me. I will rely on you. Work in and through me. Bless my life so that I can be a blessing to others. Use me to bear abundant fruit for your kingdom and bring glory to your name. I am at your service ready for your use. Amen
