Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Gratitude – Do Not Be Anxious About Anything – Philippians 4-6 – Growing As Disciples

Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.  Philippians 4:6 (NIV)

To Help Me

Why do you think that you worry so much about anything and everything? You seem to move from one worry after another. You are right about that. My biggest worry is that I will be a failure. What has all your worry done for you? Not much of anything positive that is for sure. Worry has caused me to say no to you, of that, I am very sure. I have doubted my abilities and your call on my life. I have thought that I couldn’t possibly do what you were asking me to do for you. You right about half of that statement. What’s that, what do you mean? You can’t do what I am calling you to do, by yourself, without my help. I want to work in and through you. I want you to rely on my strength. I want you to draw near to me and ask me for my help. Every time I ask you to do something for me you will need my help. So, feeling a little inadequate isn’t all that bad. But, don’t look at yourself and think about your inability. The second you begin to think that you can’t do something agree with that thought and ask for my help. Believe that I will work in and through you. Trust that I will be with you to help you. Don’t say no to me and shrink back. Say yes to me and move forward. Yes Lord, I will.

Let’s talk about your fear of failure for a moment. How much of a failure could you possibly be? I’m not sure how to answer that question. Let me put this question to you another way. You are my child. I am your Father. I made you. I am molding and shaping your life. I’m leading you through life. My Holy Spirit lives inside of you. I am praying for you. I will never leave you or forsake you. I will give you all the strength that you need to live your life for me. One day when your life on this earth ends you will begin to live forever in heaven with me. Now, I will ask you that very same question again, “How much of a failure could you possibly be?” I will never be a failure. Yes, that’s exactly right.

When you start to worry, what will you now do differently? Worry will be sign for me to come to you in prayer. I will talk with you about everything that I have begun to worry about. I will turn every worry that I have into a prayer. I will give thanks to you because I know that you will hear and answer my prayers. Yes, I will. You will give me all the strength that I will need to live my life for you. Yes, I will. Thank you Father that you are always with me to help me.

Lord, I have been a worrier about anything and everything. I know that you love me and are in control. I am so thankful that you hear and answer my prayers. Help me to always turn all my worries over to you in prayer. Amen

Guard Your Hearts And Your Minds

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Spiritual Warfare - Guard Your Hearts And Your Minds - Philippians 4:4-7 - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Spiritual Warfare – Guard Your Hearts And Your Minds – Philippians 4:4-7 – Growing As Disciples

Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:4-7

Unexplainable Peace

You are a very gifted worrier. That doesn’t sound like a compliment. It’s not. You have the ability to worry about things from every angle. You can see problems long before they will become problems, if they ever will. Do you like to worry? No, not at all, worry stresses me out. Yes, I can see that it does. When would you like to make a commitment to stop worrying? I’d like to make that commitment right now, but I don’t know where or how to begin. Would you like my help? Yes, I would. That’s good because you will never be able to stop worrying by your own efforts.

Let’s start with a question. Go ahead. Who is in charge of your life? What do you mean by that? Who controls your future? Is it you or is it me? I’d like to say that it is you. You’re cautious with that answer. Yes. I am. Why is that? I think that my worrying is a pretty good sign that I think I’m in charge of my life and it’s destiny. Yes, it does. You have a choice. Of what? Who are you going to trust? Are you going to trust me or are you going to trust yourself? I want to place all my trust in you.

Trusting me will require a change in your thinking, attitudes and actions. I’m willing to change. I’m sure that I will need your help to change. Yes, you will. Lets talk about where you will need to change. What would you like to change about my thinking and attitudes? I want you to consider who I am and all that I have done for you. You have been given so much. Yes, I know. I have done so much for you. Yes, you have. What do you think will happen when you think deeply about all the blessings that you have received from me? I think that I will be filled with joy, gladness and thanksgiving. Yes, you will. As you give joy filled thanks and praise to me, what will you become more aware of? I will become more aware of your presence with me. Yes, you will. You will know that I am right by your side and ready to help you. With my help you won’t be tempted to take control and worry about your life.

Before something becomes a worry for you, I want you to do something. What’s that? When you start to have a concern about something I want you to turn that concern into a prayer. Can you do that? Yes, I can. Your past worries have been pretty specific haven’t they? Yes, they have been. I want your prayers to be even more specific than your past worries have been. Why is that? I want you to know that I am hearing and answering your prayers. I also don’t want you to leave any room for worry. Give all the details to me. Do you know what will happen then? Yes, I think that I do. What’s that? I will have a peace from you that will defy all explanations. Yes, you will because your heart and mind will be guarded in Christ Jesus. For that I am eternally thankful.

Lord, thank you that I can bring to you in prayer anything that causes me anxiety. I know you are with me to help me through every difficulty in life. Thank you for loving-kindness. You give me joy and peace that is unexplainable!  Amen

Trust In Me

Don’t be anxious about anything. That’s a lot harder than it sounds. Why is that? I have a lot to worry about. Why is that? I have a lot of concerns. I have a lot of pressures. I have a lot of things to try to figure out. Do you like worrying? Is worrying some sort of hobby of yours? No, I don’t like to worry. It’s not a hobby of mine.

Is everything in your hands? Is everything under your control? No, I feel out of control. Most of the outcomes I worry about in life are out of my control. That is when I worry the most. I have some news for you. What’s that? You are not in control. The world around you is not in your hands. There is very little in the world around you that you can control. You really have two choices. What are my choices?

You can be filled with worry and carry a heavy burden of anxiety or you can place all your trust in me. Do you believe that I am with you? Do you believe that I will watch over you? Do you believe that I love you? Do you believe that I will help you? Lord, I believe that you are with me to help me. I believe that you love me and will watch over me. How would I ever know that is what you believe? I’m not sure what you mean. If you believe all that you say that you do, will you place all your trust in me? How can I demonstrate that I am placing all my trust in you? What does placing all my trust in you require? What will I do if I really am trusting fully in you? Those are all very good questions.

Placing all your trust in me requires that you come to me. If you are really trusting in me you will talk to me about all your worries. You will turn every one of your worries into a prayer to me. You will ask me for all that you need. You will give thanks to me because you trust that I will hear and answer your prayers. You will allow me to relieve you of your anxiety and fill you with my peace. Is that what you want? Yes Lord, I want to be filled with your peace. I want to be relieved of all my anxiety. I want to let go of all my burdens. I will turn every one of my worries into a prayer to you. That will be very good.

Lord, instead of worrying and a carrying a weight of worry I’m going to turn all my burdens over to you in prayer. Thank you that you are with me in the midst of difficulty, guarding my heart and mind and giving me your peace. Amen

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Promises – Day 13 – Philippians 4:4-7 – Present Your Requests To God – Growing As Disciples

Philippians 4:4-7 (NIV)

Anxiety

I know what that is like. I have experienced plenty of that. You have experienced plenty of what? I have experienced plenty of anxiety and worry. One might say that I have been a gifted worrier. Is that a gift? No, it is not a gift. What have you worried about? You name it, I have worried about anything and everything. I have worried about real problems. I have worried about imaginary problems. I have worried about what would soon come my way. I have worried about what would almost certainly never end up happening. I’m sad to say that I have often allowed my life to be filled with anxiety and stress and worry. It is not fun. It is debilitating and defeating and discouraging and depressing. It has been very difficult to move forward with you when I have allowed myself to be overcome with worry. How so? Well, it is difficult to follow you to where you are leading me to do what you are asking me, if I am paralyzed with doubt and fear and anxiety and worry. There is no doubt about that. I know.

What would you like to do differently? How will you overcome doubt and fear and anxiety and worry so you can keep on moving forward with me? Those are good questions. Do you have any answers? Yes, I do. I will rely on you. I will draw near to you. I know you will draw near to me. Yes, I will. I am already very near to you. I am right alongside you. I am always ready to help you.  With that in mind, I will bring my doubts and fears and worries and anxieties to you. With a joyful and thankful heart, I will turn all my doubts and fears and worries and anxieties into prayers to you. That will be very good. Why will you have a joyful and thankful heart? I will have a joyful and thankful heart because you are near to me and ready to help me. I am certain that you will hear and answer my prayers. You will fill me with your supernatural peace, even in the midst of worrisome situations. You will guard my heart and mind and life in Christ Jesus. You will keep me moving forward with you. Yes, I will, you can count on me. Thank you, Heavenly Father.

Heavenly Father, I have been a worrier. I have allowed myself to be filled with anxiety. That is about to change. With a thankful heart, I will turn all my worries into prayers to you. Fill me with your supernatural peace. Guard my heart and mind in Christ Jesus

Present Your Requests To God

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Becoming Like Christ - Day 117 - Philippians 4:6-7 - Present Your Requests To God- Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Becoming Like Christ – Day 117 – Philippians 4:6-7 – Present Your Requests To God- Growing As Disciples

Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:6-7 (NIV)

Present My Requests

That is what I will do from now on. What will you do from now on? I will present all my requests to you. That is a good plan. What has caused you to come to this decision? For too long and far too often, I have carried all my own worries. I have been weighed down by worry and filled up with anxiety. Why have you carried all your own worries? Why have you not asked for my help? I’m not completely sure why I have carried my own worries. Take a guess. I would guess that I have an independent and proud streak within me. Is that a guess? No, not really. Anyhow, I have thought to myself that I can handle all my own problems and difficulties. I have said to myself, “I shouldn’t need to ask for anyone’s help”. Has that included me? Yes, unfortunately. Is that your sole answer for your not asking for my help? I’m sure it’s not. What else?  Sometimes life has become so harried and frantic that I have forgotten to ask you for your help. There must be more. Don’t hold anything back from me. Well, sometimes I have wondered if you would hear and answer my prayer. That sounds terrible. That is something I hate to admit. If I have had a lack of faith in you that is something that I will not continue to let exist in me. That’s good. What will you do? I will begin to turn every worry of mine into a prayer to you. Not only will I pray to you, but I will pray prayers filled with faith and thanksgiving. Why is that? I know that you will hear me. I know that you will help me. I know that you love and care for me. I am your child. Yes, you are. Yes, I will hear you. Yes, I will help you. I do love and care for you.

What will happen to you as you turn all your worries into prayers to me? I will carry my worries no longer. I will give them to you. I will let you carry my worries for me. That will be very good. What else? Then you will fill me with your peace. Your peace will guard my heart and mind and life. Your peace will cover me. Your peace will protect me. Your peace will be before, behind me and all around me. Your peace will completely surround me in ways that I will never be able to fully comprehend. Yes, it will. Keep on turning all your worries into prayers to me. Yes Lord, I will. That will be very good.

Lord, far too often I have carried my worries by myself. I have held on to them and been filled with anxiety. No longer will I carry my worries. I will turn every worry into a thanksgiving filled prayer to you. I know you will give me your peace as I fully trust you. Amen

Anxious For Nothing

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Be - Philippians 4:6-7 - Anxious For Nothing - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Be – Philippians 4:6-7 – Anxious For Nothing – Growing As Disciples

Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:6-7 (NKJV)

Trust Me

You are filled with anxiety. You are carry burdens that are too heavy for you to carry. You are worrying needlessly. Do you know why you are filled with anxiety? Do you know why you carry such heavy burdens? I live with a lot of worrisome situations. I have a lot to worry about. Does that sound like the correct answer to you? No, it doesn’t sound like the correct answer. But, I don’t have any other answer, that might sound better. Would you like to talk about why you are filled with anxiety? Would you like to discuss why you are carrying burdens that are too heavy for you to carry? Yes, I think I would like that. You seem a little hesitant. I am a little hesitant. Why is that? I may not like hearing why I worry and am filled with so much anxiety. You are right about that. I’m still willing to listen. That’s good.

Are you ready to listen right now? Yes, I am ready to listen right now. Here we go. You think you can. I think I can what? You think you can handle your own worrisome situations. You think you are in control of your life. You think that you should be able to solve every problem and handle every circumstance. You think you are in charge of your own life. When you realize that you are not in control or in charge of your own life you worry. When situations and circumstances are beyond your control you worry about them. Does my assessment sound correct to you? Yes, it does. Let me ask you a couple questions. Go ahead. When you asked me to be your Savior and Lord didn’t you give up control of your life to me? Yes, I did. Didn’t you tell me that you were going to let me be in charge of your life? Yes, I did. If you really let me be in control and in charge of your life would your life be filled with so much worry and anxiety? No, I suppose not. You suppose not? I am certain that my life would not be filled with so much worry and anxiety if I fully entrusted my life to you. That’s right.

I have one more question for you. Go ahead, I’m listening. What has prevented you from fully entrusting your life to me? I’m not sure. Is this the part that I may not want to hear? Good guess. Yes, it is. You have my full attention. Why don’t you tell me the answer? You have figured out the answer, of that I’m positive. My own pride has caused me to be filled with worry and anxiety. That’s right. Will you humbly turn all your worries and anxieties to me? Will you allow me to carry your burdens? Will you allow me to release you from worry and anxiety? Will you allow me to fill you with my peace? Yes Lord, I will turn every one of my worries and anxieties into a prayer to you. That will be very good.

Lord, I have lived a life filled with anxiety. I have carried burdens that were too heavy for me to carry. I have worried unnecessarily. Guard my heart and mind. Help me to turn every one of my anxieties into a prayer to you so that I can receive your peace. Amen

Present Your Requests

I’m not hearing many actual prayer requests from you. You are not asking me for very much. Why is that? Do you think that I may be too busy to hear and answer your prayers? Do you think your prayers may come as an inconvenience to me? Do you not want to bother me with your requests? Do you think that you are not worthy to have your prayers heard and answered by me? Are you so busy that you just don’t have the time to pray? You don’t have to answer all my questions immediately. I do want you to think deeply about what I am saying to you.

Is your life so under control that you don’t need my help? Now, I can’t let that question go by unanswered. That is a question I don’t need to take time to answer. I didn’t think so either. You’ve seen my life. Yes, I see your life from beginning to end. I take notice of every detail of your life on every day of your life. Have you noticed that I am full of worry and anxiety? Yes, that’s exactly why I started this conversation with you about your prayers. What do you have in mind? What do you think I have in mind? You don’t want me to carry worry and anxiety through life. No, I do not.

I want your life to be filled with joy. I want you to have peace that is so full and deep that you can’t even explain it. I want you to have my joy and peace no matter what circumstances you face in life. How is that possible? You tell me. I don’t know. Well, do you want to keep carrying your worries and anxieties through life? No, I don’t. What can you do with your worries and anxieties? I can give my worries and anxieties to you. I can turn each one of my worries and anxieties into a prayer to you. Yes, you can. Now if you did that, you would be asking for a lot more from me in your prayers. Yes, I would. That is exactly what I want to hear from you. I want you to ask me for all that you need. I want you to come to me to rely on me in your prayers. Will you do that? Yes Lord, I will.

Lord, I have held on to anxious worries. My joy has been robbed. My ability to rejoice has been limited. I know that you are near to me and ready to hear my prayers. I will turn all my worries into prayers to you so that your peace will guard my heart and mind. Amen

Present Your Requests To God

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Gratitude - Present Your Requests To God - Philippians 4:6 - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Gratitude – Present Your Requests To God – Philippians 4:6 – Growing As Disciples

Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.  Philippians 4:6 (NIV)

Specific Prayers

Do you have really vague worries? I’m not sure what you mean. Do you feel worry but don’t know what you are worrying about? No, I can’t say that I do. That’s what I thought. My worries are usually very specific. I may have no real cause to worry but at least I know what I’m worrying about.

So then, if your worries are well defined and quite specific why do you offer vague prayers about them? I’m not sure. If you offer a very vague prayer how will you ever know if I answered it? I might have a vague feeling that my prayer was answered. That’s my point. You would never know for sure if your prayer was or wasn’t answered. I get it.

When you pray do you really expect that I will hear and answer your prayers? I hope that you will. That doesn’t sound like a real answer to me. When I pray I wonder if I’m asking for something that is worthy of being asked and answered. Let me tell you something. What’s that? If something causes you to worry then its worthy of turning it into a prayer to me. Do you know why that is? You don’t want me to worry. That’s right. What do I want you to do instead of worrying? You want me to have faith in you. Yes, but be more specific. You want me to have faith that you will hear and answer my prayers. Why would I do that for you? You love me and I am your child. Yes, you are. Do you delight in hearing and answering requests from your children? Yes, I really do. You can be just as sure that I do as well, even more so.

If you have faith that I will hear and answer your prayers, with what attitude will you make them? I will make my prayers to you with joy and thanksgiving because I know that you are listening to me. Yes, I am. What then will happen to the worry and anxiety that you have been carrying? When I pray to you my worries and anxieties will be replaced with joy and thanksgiving. Yes they will. Now start praying specific prayers that I can hear and answer for you. Yes Lord, I will.

Lord, I will no longer hold on to my worries and struggle through them on my own. I am so thankful that I can turn all my worries into very specific prayers and petitions to you. Thank you for hearing and answering me in my need. Amen
