Building Others Up According To Their Needs

The Virtuous Life – Day 213 – Ephesians 4-29-32 – Building Others Up According To Their Needs – Growing As Disciples

Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.  And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.  Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice.  Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you. Ephesians 4:29-32 (NIV)

Guard My Words

That I need to do. What do you need to do? I need to carefully guard my words. I need to make certain that no unwholesome words come out of my mouth. What will you do with your words? How will you not use your words? How will you use your words? I’m beginning to understand that my words are a tool. My words can be used to either build up or tear down. What kind of words tear down? Words of fear and doubt tear down. Words of slander, judgement, and criticism tear down. Words of frustration, argument, and anger tear down. Bitter, evil, and immoral words tear down. Arrogant and prideful words tear down. None of these kinds of words are life giving. None of these words are worthy of thinking or speaking or acting on. You are correct. All these kinds of words grieve the Holy Spirit. You have called me to think and speak and act on words that build up, words that give life to all who hear them. That is exactly right.

What kinds of words build up? Words of hope and peace and joy build up. Words of encouragement build up. Words of faith build up. Words of love build up. Words that you give me to think or speak or act on will build others up according to their needs. You will give me words to think and speak and act on that will lift others up and spur them on. Yes, I will, you can be sure of that.

Where will life giving words that build others up come from? They will come from you. They will come from your word. As your word dwells in me richly, you will give me new words to think and speak and act on. As I meditate on your word and memorize your word, you will change my heart and transform my mind. You will replace my old thoughts and words and actions with those you want me to think and speak and act on. Yes, I will, let there be no doubt about that.

One more thought. What’s that? The new life-giving words that I give to you to think and speak and act on will not only be for the building up of others, but they will also build you up as well.

Holy Spirit, I do not want any of my thoughts, or words, or actions to grieve you. I don’t want any unwholesome words to come out of my mouth. I want my words to build others up according to their needs. Help me to be kind, compassionate and forgiving. Amen

Build Others Up

That is how I would like you to use me. How would you like me to use you? I would like to become like you. I would like to think and speak and act like you. I would like to follow your example. I would like to be kind and compassionate and forgiving towards others just as you have been to me. I would like all my thoughts and words and actions to build others up according to their needs. To think and speak and act like you, I will certainly need your help. How will you need my help? I will need you to change my heart and transform my mind. I will need you to mold and shape my life. I will need you to make me into the person you want me to become. I need you to remove any unhealthy and unwholesome thoughts, or words or actions from within me. Is this your prayer? Is this your desire? Is this your passionate hope? Yes, I am praying and asking you to do this work within me. This is no half-hearted, faint request on my part. All my heart and mind and soul are in this prayer request. Why is this prayer so important to you? I know that this is your purpose and plan for my life. I know that you want me to become like you. I know that you want me to think and speak and act like you. You want me to be a bright light in the world. You want me to be a bold witness for you in the darkness of this life. The only way that I will ever be able to bear fruit for your kingdom or bring glory to your name is if you do this work in and through me. So, I believe that I want what you want. So, my heart and mind and life are open to you. Do your work in me. Have your way with me. Help me to build others up by all my thoughts and words and actions. Yes, I will do this work in you. You will be a bold and bright witness for me in the world. You will bear an abundance of fruit for my kingdom and bring glory to my name because I will be working in and through you every day as you love and follow and serve me.

Lord, I will follow your example. I will be kind and compassionate and forgiving to others. I will allow you to make me to be like you. Use all the thoughts of my mind, words of my mouth and the deeds of my life to build others up according to their needs. Amen

Forgiving Each Other

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Character - Philippians 4:32 - Forgiving Each Other - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide- Character – Philippians 4:32 – Forgiving Each Other – Growing As Disciples

Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you. Ephesians 4:32 (NIV)

Forgiven And Forgiving

Do you want to be like me? Will you do for others what I have done for you? Do you want to be my witness in the world? I want to be like you. I want to do for others what you have done for me. I want to stand out from the crowd. Yes, I want to be a bold and bright witness for you in the world. Then you will need to do what others, in the world, will not do. You must be willing to do what is difficult. I’m not sure what you are asking of me. Can you be more specific? Yes, I can be very specific.

You have been mistreated. Others have harmed and hurt you. You have ben spurned and rejected and betrayed. Is what I am saying true? You know that all you have said is true. I have some deep wounds and painful memories. What have you wanted to do to those who have harmed and hurt you? To be honest, I have wanted to get even. I have wanted revenge. I have wanted to pay others back for the pain and suffering that they have caused me. Would that help you in any way? Would that make you feel better? Would healing come into your life by paying back evil with evil? Would you be completely free of anger and bitterness because you took revenge and got even? No, I can see that there is no benefit for me to pay others back for the wrongs they have committed against me. That’s right. Seeking revenge and paying back evil with evil is what happens in the world. If you want to pay others back for the wrongs that they have done to you, you will never be a witness for me in the world. That would not be good. I desperately want 32to be a bold and bright witness for you in the world. Yes, I know you do.

There are some other things that I know you want. Like what? You want to become like me. You want to know my will and walk in my ways. You want to live like I lived. You want to do what I did. You want to bear fruit for my kingdom and bring glory to my name. Am I right? Yes, I want all these things as well. Then you must forgive others just like I forgave you. Can you forgive others? Will you forgive others? Yes, I will forgive others just like forgave me. Then you will be like me and that will be very good.

Lord, thank you for forgiving me of all my sin and cleansing me of my unrighteousness. Help me to have your attitude of compassion and kindness toward others. Help me to forgive others just as you have forgiven me. Use me as your bold witness in the world. Amen
