Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Becoming Like Christ – Day 99 – Isaiah 40:29-31 – Those Who Wait On The Lord – Growing As Disciples

He gives power to the weak, And to those who have no might He increases strength. Even the youths shall faint and be weary, And the young men shall utterly fall, But those who wait on the LORD Shall renew their strength; They shall mount up with wings like eagles, They shall run and not be weary, They shall walk and not faint. Isaiah 40:29-31 (NKJV)

Power

That is what I want. What do you want? I want power. I am weary, worn out and tired of operating under my own power. I probably should not use the word power at all when I am referring to myself. Why is that? I am weak. I have very little, if any power. That is good to admit. Why is that? You tell me. You think I can answer that question? I know that you can answer that question. You have quite a bit of experience with powerlessness. Yes, I do, I’m sad to say. There is nothing to be sad about in regard to knowing that you are powerless. So, now tell me why it is a good thing to know and admit that you lack power. If I think that I am strong, I am only pridefully and foolishly ignoring the obvious. If I think that I am strong, I am operating under a delusion. If I persist in trying to operate under my own power and strength, there are only a few possible results. Like what? I will accomplish very little with my own power and strength. I will live a self-reliant, pride-filled unproductive life. How do you know this to be true? Your word says that, apart from you I can do nothing. My experience has also confirmed the truth of your word. I think your word and my life experience have abundantly established the fact that apart from you I can do nothing. That’s true. Anything else? Yes, if I continue to operate in my own strength I will weary and wear myself out in the process of accomplishing nothing. None of these are good results. No, they are not.

Why do you want my power? I want to be able to go and do what you ask of me. I want to be able to accomplish your purposes and fulfill your plans. I want to bear fruit for your kingdom and bring glory to your name. Those are all very good motives.

What must you do if you want my power? I must come to trust and rely on you. I must wait on you. I must come to rest in your presence. I must live in an intimate relationship with you. I must ask you for your help. Will I give you my help? Will I answer your prayer? Yes, certainly. You will renew my strength. You will give me your power. You will make me able to do whatever you ask of me. Will you trust and rely on me? Will you wait on me? Will you rest in my presence? Will you live in an intimate relationship with me? Will you ask for my help? Yes, I will. Then you have all that you need from me. Thank you, Lord.

Lord, I have pridefully relied on my own strength. I have run myself weary. No more. I will make it my daily practice to wait on you. I will come to rest in your presence. I know you will renew my strength. I know you will give me power to accomplish your will. Amen

Key Question… When have you foolishly and pridefully tried to rely on your own strength?

Those Who Hope In The Lord

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - 365 Days Of Guidance - Day 6 Those Who Hope In The Lord - Isaiah 40:29-31 - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – 365 Days Of Guidance – Day 6 Those Who Hope In The Lord – Isaiah 40:29-31 – Growing As Disciples

He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; but those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint. Isaiah 40:29-31

Strength

I’d like to ask you a question. Go ahead, I’m listening. Do you think that you are strong? Since you are asking I know that the answer can’t be yes. Is that really the only reason? No, my life experience has taught me that I am weak and prone to get weary and stumble and fall. But, there have been plenty of times that you have thought that you were pretty strong, aren’t there? Yes, that’s true, I suppose. How strong do you feel right now? Not very. Actually, my opinion of my own strength and power is getting weaker all the time. Why do you think that is true? As I draw close to you, I’m getting a clearer understanding and picture of your power and my weakness. I look at you and say to myself, I have none of that.

Would you like strength and power from me? Yes, I definitely would. Why is that? I would like your power and strength so that I can be and do all that you ask of me. You don’t want it for yourself? You won’t strut around like some muscle man wanting to demonstrate his great strength? No, I desire your strength to accomplish your purposes and plans. You have given good answers. I won’t give my strength and power to the proud. Usually, they don’t ask for it because they think they don’t need it. That works out then. It does. I also won’t give my strength and power to those who can’t and won’t use it. What do you mean by that? Do you need my strength and power while you are sitting around on a couch watching television and eating potato chips? No, I’m sure not. My power and strength is given when you need it as you engage in the work that I’m calling you to do. I get it. Are you sure? Haven’t you tried to do my work without asking for my strength and power? Yes, many times. Why is that? I was confused. How so? I thought I had all that I needed and I was completely wrong. I’m glad that you see that now. Me too.

How much of my strength and power do you want? All that I need to live for you and accomplish the tasks that you have called me to do. How willing are you to come and ask and wait for my strength and power? I will devote myself to coming, asking, waiting, and relying on you for all your help. Let’s review this. You will come? You will ask? You will wait? You will work? Are all these true? Yes, these are the commitments that I am making to you today. Good. When you do these I will most certainly hear and answer your prayer. You will have my power and strength.

Lord, life has left me weary and worn out. I’m tired and weak. I need your power and strength. I will wait here in your presence. Refresh, revive and renew my life. Help me to soar like an eagle on currents of wind as I trust in you.  Amen

Key Question… Why did God design you to need His power and strength to live your life for Him?

Living It Out… Determine a time and place to meet with the Lord, to wait in His presence, so that He can renew your strength.

Seeing It Happen… Have faith that the Lord will renew your strength as you wait, hope, and trust in Him.

Get Ready To Share… Share with another person or your small group how the Lord has given you strength to live for Him.

Prayer To Bless Others… May you come to Lord to ask Him to give you His strength to accomplish all His plans in and through you.

Those Who Wait On The Lord

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - The Prayer Filled Life - Day 65 - Isaiah 40:29-31 - Those Who Wait On The Lord - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – The Prayer Filled Life – Day 65 – Isaiah 40:29-31 – Those Who Wait On The Lord – Growing As Disciples

Isaiah 40:29-31

Wait

Now that is not something that comes naturally to me. What does not come naturally to you? Waiting does not come naturally to me. Sometimes, even when I am sitting very still it seems like my heart and mind are racing at full speed within me. Patience is likewise not one of my strongest and best gifts. Its ironic, but right now I am waiting for someone that said that they would be here in an hour. That was nearly two hours ago. Am I in the middle of some real-life object lesson? I don’t think waiting when something is delayed is what you have in mind in this case. What kind of waiting do you think I have in mind here and now? You want me to wait in your presence. Yes, I do.  In your presence, I will be changed. In your presence, I will be refreshed and revived and restored. In your presence, I will be given wisdom and insight. In your presence, I will receive instructions and direction. In your presence, I will be given your power and strength. In your presence, you will help me to come to know you. In your presence, you will change the thoughts of my mind, words of my mouth, and deeds of my life. In your presence, I will come to know and love and follow and serve you with all that is within me. What would you say about your desire to wait in my presence? There is no place I would rather be than in your presence. There is nothing I would rather do than wait for you to do your work in me, for me, and through me, as I have waited in your presence. So now, is it difficult for you to wait in my presence? No, is it not hard for me to wait in your presence. You have given me the desire and the ability to wait in your presence. It is still a true statement that waiting does not come naturally to you. How so? Waiting in my presence has come to you supernaturally by my Spirit. I have given you the desire and will and passion to wait in my presence. This has come to you as a gift from me to you. Thank you Lord, for this great and glorious gift. I will keep on waiting in your presence. That will be very good.

Lord, I know that without you, I’m weak and powerless. On my own, I will never be able to go and do what you ask of me. I will never be able to bear lasting and eternal fruit for you. So, I will wait on you. Give me your power and strength to accomplish your will. Amen

Key Question…  When has the Lord renewed your strength as you have faithfully waited on Him?

Living It Out…  Make it your daily practice to set aside a time and place to wait on the Lord.

Seeing It Happen…  Have faith that the Lord will renew your strength as you wait on Him.

Get Ready To Share…  Share with another person or your small group how the Lord has given you power and strength as you waited on Him.

Prayer To Bless Others…  May you wait on the Lord so He can renew your strength.

Power To The Weak

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Promises - Day 8 - Isaiah 40:29-31 - Power To The Weak - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Promises – Day 8 – Isaiah 40:29-31 – Power To The Weak – Growing As Disciples

Power

I certainly need that. You certainly need what? I certainly need your power. For what do you need my power? I need your power to be able to accomplish your purposes and fulfill your plans. I need your power to do the work you have given me to do for you. I need your power to live the life you have called me to live. When did you come to the conclusion that you need my power? Well, it has become quite obvious to me that I don’t have the power I need to accomplish your purposes, fulfill your plans, do the work you have given me to do, or even live the life you have called me to love. How did that become obvious to you? My weariness has certainly revealed my lack of power. My own fruitless efforts have also revealed my lack of power. I know that you have said that, apart from you, I can do nothing. Yes, that is true. Well, I have done a lot of nothing, under my own power and strength. I know it is not your will for me to accomplish nothing. No, it is not.

It is a very good that you have come to realize that you need my power and strengthen working in and through you. Why do you suppose that you need my power and strength? Why do you suppose that I did not create you with all the power and strength that you would need in life? You did not want me to be self-reliant You did not want me to be self-sufficient. Why is that? You love me. You want me to live in an intimate relationship with you. You want me to come to you for all that I need. You want to refresh and revive and renew and strengthen me as I come to rest in your presence. You want me to walk through life with you. Yes, I do. If I never needed your help, would I be drawn into an intimate relationship with you? Would I come to rest in your presence, if I was never weary or worn out? Would I ever rely on you, if I never needed your help? Would I ever come to know and love you as I do, had you not made me as I am? I doubt it. So, I am thankful that you made me to want to enter into your presence to live my life in an intimate relationship with you. That is very good. You will have all that you need from me. Thank you, Lord.

Lord, I have set apart a time and place to meet with you on a daily basis. It is my joy to rest in your presence. You refresh, revive, renew and strengthen me. Give me your power to accomplish your purposes and fulfill your plans. Work in and through my life. Amen
