Then he got into the boat and his disciples followed him.  Without warning, a furious storm came up on the lake, so that the waves swept over the boat. But Jesus was sleeping.  The disciples went and woke him, saying, “Lord, save us! We’re going to drown!”  He replied, “You of little faith, why are you so afraid?” Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the waves, and it was completely calm.  The men were amazed and asked, “What kind of man is this? Even the winds and the waves obey him!”  Matthew 8:23-27 (NIV)

Storms Of Life

Here I am again. Where are you again? Here I am in another storm. You call this a storm? Yes, I call this a storm. It may not look like much of a storm to you. But it looks like a big storm to me. So, what if it is a big storm? What will you do with all the storms you face in life, whether they are big or small? What have you learned as storms have raged against you? What have you learned as you have gone through storms with me? I know that I can cry out to you in all the storms of life. I am never alone. You are with me. You will not forsake me. You will help me to weather all the storms of life. You will bring me through all the storms of life.  So, if a storm causes you to draw nearer to me and to rely more fully on me, it cannot be all bad. Is that true? Would you agree? Yes, as I have gone through the storms of life, with you, I have benefited greatly. How so? I have known that you have heard and answered my prayers. I have seen your power and strength. I have been astonished at how you have calmed storms that raged all around me. You have been my refuge and strength and deliverer. I have learned that you are worthy of all my hope and faith and trust. I have come to know that I can rely more fully on you. That is all very good.

Are you done learning all that you can in the storms of life? Are there no longer any valuable lessons you can learn? Certainly not, I still have much to learn. I’m listening. What can you still learn? I can still learn how to rely on you more fully. I can still learn how to place my faith in you more completely. I can still learn to pray more passionately and persistently.  I can still be astonished and thankful and grateful as you deliver me out of all the storms of life. I can still be overcome by your kindness and mercy and love for me.  I can still be wowed and in awe of all your power and strength and majesty. Will you allow me to continue to teach you all these lessons? Yes Lord, I will. That will be very good.

Lord, I have gone through raging storms with you. I thought I might drown. I have cried out in prayer to you. You have calmed my storms and given me peace. Thank you that I can rely on you in the storms of life. You are my refuge and strength and deliverer. Amen

A Furious Storm Came Up

Storms Of Life

I have had the dumbest of thoughts. What dumb thoughts have you thought? Right now, I can think of two. Only two? That’s funny. I’m sure that there are an unlimited number of more dumb thoughts that have been in my mind. But I am calling out two dumb thoughts right here and now. I’m listening. My first dumb thought was that as your follower, I would be exempt from the storms of life. I have no idea why I ever held that thought in my mind. Tell me more. Two things are obviously true. One, is that this is a sin broken world. This world no longer functions according to your design. Sin and darkness and evil have brought storms of all shapes and sizes and kinds into the lives of everyone who have ever lived on this earth. That includes you. You went through storms in life. You were despised and rejected. You were mocked and ridiculed. You were hurt and wounded. Ultimately, you died on the cross as a result of and payment for the sin and evil in this world. Yes, all of this is true. So why, as your follower, would I be exempt from storms in life? How could I have thought that? Well, now I know better. The proof is in the pudding. My mistaken theory has been proven false. Everyone has and will go through storms in life of that I have no doubt, that is also obviously true. You mentioned you were calling out two dumb thoughts. What is the second one? My second dumb thought is that I will go through the storms of life all alone, by myself. I can’t tell you how many times I have relied on myself to try to weather and withstand the storms of life. How has relying on yourself in the storms of life worked out for you? Not well at all. The storms of life have only served to show me how weak and feeble and in need I truly am. Then the storms of life have not been all bad? No, not at all, the storms of life have caused me to cry out to you. The storms of life have caused me to draw near to you. The storms of life have caused me to come to rely on you. The storms of life have caused me to place all my faith in you. In the storms of life, you have shown me that you are with me to help me. In the storms of life, you have increased my faith and hope and trust in you. That is very good. Yes, it is. Thank you, Lord.

Lord, at one time I thought that, as your follower, I was exempt from storms in life. I don’t know why I thought that. You went through storms. I will go through storms. I will place all my faith in you as I go through storms. I know you will be with me to help me. Amen

Key Question… How has the Lord been with you to help you to go through severe storms in life?

Living It Out… Place all your faith in the Lord as you rely on Him to help you go through storms in life.

Seeing It Happen… Have faith that the Lord will be with you to help you as you go through storms in life.

Get Ready To Share… Share with another person or your small group how the Lord has helped you to go through storms in life.

Prayer To Bless Others… May you place your faith in the Lord as you go through storms in life.

Who Is This Man?

The Sacramental Life - Day 325 - Matthew 8:23-27 - Who Is This Man? - Growing As Disciples

The Sacramental Life – Day 325 – Matthew 8:23-27 – Who Is This Man? – Growing As Disciples

Then Jesus got into the boat and started across the lake with his disciples.  Suddenly, a fierce storm struck the lake, with waves breaking into the boat. But Jesus was sleeping. The disciples went and woke him up, shouting, “Lord, save us! We’re going to drown!” Jesus responded, “Why are you afraid? You have so little faith!” Then he got up and rebuked the wind and waves, and suddenly all was calm.  The disciples were amazed. “Who is this man?” they asked. “Even the winds and waves obey him!” Matthew 8:23-27 (NLT)

Storms Of Life

You will go through many storms in life. This should come as no surprise to you. In the storms of life, you will have one choice to make. Will you place your faith in me, or will you place your faith in yourself? That doesn’t sound like much of a choice, or rather should I say, that does seem like a difficult choice to make? Is that what you think? Do you think you have an easy choice before you? Well, not exactly. I may have an easy choice to make but the follow through or living it out or putting it into practice is much more difficult. How so? I could quickly and easily say that I will always place my faith in you through all the storms of life. I could continue by saying that I will never place my faith in myself as I go through storms in life. But would my thoughts and words and actions be consistent with my placing all my faith in you? What if I were afraid and filled with worry in the middle of all the storms of life? What if I were to tell myself that I wasn’t going to make it, that I was going to drown? What if I took every possible action, by myself, to get around or remove myself from every storm that came my way? Wouldn’t those thoughts and words and actions tell me where my faith was placed? If these were my thoughts and words and actions in the storms of life it would be obvious that I had placed my faith in myself. You have made a very good point.

How do you want to respond to the storms of life? I want to come to you. I want to place my faith in you. I want you to be my shelter. I want you to be my refuge in every storm. I want to have complete hope and faith and trust in you. I want to meet with you in prayer when trouble swirls around me. I want to be filled with your peace even when storms rage all around me. I want to know without a doubt that you are with me to help me. You will bring me through every storm. So, that is what I will do. I will place all my faith in you. I will hold on to you as you hold on to me in all the storms of life. That will be very good.

Lord, I have gone through many storms in life. At times I have thought I might drown. I don’t ever want to go through another storm without you. I will place all my faith in you. I will not be afraid because I know that you will always be with me to help me. Amen

Key Question…  How has your faith in the Lord grown stronger as you gone through storms with Him?

Living It Out…  Place all your faith in the Lord as you go through storms in life.

Seeing It Happen…  Have faith that the Lord will be with you to help you when you go through storms in life.

Get Ready To Share… Share with another person or your small group how the Lord has helped you go through storms in life.

Prayer To Bless Others…  May you place your faith in the Lord as you go through all the storms of life.
