Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Promises – Day 28 – Psalm 37:4 – Delight Yourself In The Lord – Growing As Disciples

Delight yourself in the LORD and he will give you the desires of your heart. Psalm 37:4 (NIV)

Desires

When I think of some of the desires, I have had in my heart, I am thankful that you did not grant them to me. Why is that? They certainly did not come from you. They were not good and right and pleasing to you. Having what I wanted and desired at one time, is certainly not what I would want or desire now. So, your desires have changed since you started following me? Without, a doubt. In fact, my desires now look nothing like the desires I had before I came to know and love you. How so? My old desires were of the flesh. They were earthly. I wanted comfort and pleasure. I want power and prestige. I wanted wealth and riches. Looking back, those desires were pretty pathetic. Why do you now think that? What good is a desire that has no lasting value? What good is a desire that will fade away when this life ends? What good is a desire that will bear no fruit in light of all eternity? You have asked some very good questions. What do you think? I want desires that come from you. I want desires that are good and right and pleasing to you. I want you to give me desires that will bear fruit for all eternity. I want you to grant me desires that line up with your purposes and plans. So, you are not asking for or wanting some small desires? No, I am not. But I do believe that I am asking for what you want. What do I want? You want me to live a life that bears fruit for your kingdom and brings glory to your name. That is what I want for you. Yes, well, I believe that you will give and grant this desire that is in my heart and on my mind. Yes, I will, you can be certain of that. Thank you, Lord.

Let’s take a step back. I have a few questions for you. I’m listening. How have these new and godly desires come into your heart? As I have drawn near to you and as I have delighted in you, you have given or placed these new desires in my heart. Give me another example of a new desire within you. It is my utmost and most passionate desire to know and love and follow and serve you. This desire certainly did not come from me. No, it did not. You have fanned the flame of this desire in me. Yes, I have. In fact, I would say that I am on fire with this desire in me. My heart burns for you. That is very good. What are you certain of? I am certain that you will keep on giving and granting me the desires of my heart as I continue to delight in you. Yes, I will. Thank you, Lord. I will keep on drawing near to you. I will keep on delighting in you. That will be very good.

Lord, it is my great joy to delight in you. You are so very good to me. I love you with all my heart and mind and soul and strength. It is the desire of my heart to know you intimately and to love and follow and serve you. Grant this desire that you have given to me. Amen

Delight Yourself In The Lord

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Heart - Psalm 37:4 - Delight Yourself In The Lord - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Heart – Psalm 37:4 – Delight Yourself In The Lord – Growing As Disciples

Delight yourself in the LORD and he will give you the desires of your heart. Psalm 37:4 (NIV)

Delight And Desire

I delight myself in you. You are my Savior and Lord. You are my God and Father. You are my refuge and strength. You are my guard and my guide. You are my hope and joy. You have lavished me with your love. You have allowed me to taste your goodness. Your hand is on me. You have been with me to help me. You will never leave or forsake me. You have blessed my life. You created just as I am. You gave me a heart that seeks after you. You gave me a desire to live my life with and for you. I want to live and walk in an intimate relationship with you. There is no place I would rather be than in your presence. There is nothing I would rather do than your will. I want to do what is pleasing to you. I want to go wherever you guide me. I want to do whatever you ask of me. I want to bear fruit for your kingdom. I want to bring glory to your name. One day I want to hear you say, “well done, good and faith servant. These are the desires of my heart.

What will I do with the desires of your heart? You will grant me the desires of my heart. Why are you certain that I will grant you the desires of your heart? You gave me the desires of my heart. If the desires of my heart came from me, then I would not be certain that you would grant them. Why is that? In the past, I have had many desires in my heart that I know were worldly. They were fleshly desires that revolved around seeking and fulfilling my own comfort and pleasure. I wanted the best of all that the world had to offer. I had an earthly rather than a heavenly perspective. I am not asking you to fulfill the desires that were in my heart before I came to know you. I do not want all that the world offers. I am not seeking my own comfort and pleasure. I want what you want. I want to love, follow and serve you with all my heart and mind and soul and strength. I want to be fully devoted to you in all my thoughts, words and deeds. Do I believe that you will grant these desires of my heart? Yes, I do. I am positive without a doubt that you are both a giver and granter of desires in my heart. You will certainly grant any desire that has come from you. Yes, I will. I only ask that you keep on giving and granting desires that you want me to have in my heart. That I will do, you can be certain of that.

Lord, here I am. It is my delight to sit and wait quietly, stilly and patiently here in your presence. You have both given and granted to me the desires of my heart. You have made me content with how you have richly blessed my life. Amen

Delight – Desires

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Rhythms - Psalm 37:4 - Delight - Desires - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Rhythms – Psalm 37:4 – Delight – Desires – Growing As Disciples

Delight yourself in the LORD and he will give you the desires of your heart. Psalm 37:4 (NIV)

Desire

Desire, now that’s a word that has caused me a lot of pain and suffering. Why is that? My entire life has been a long pursuit of one desire after another. I have been driven by desires. I have been led along by desires. I have been guided by desires. My heart has been filled with so many different desires. Never have I been content. Never have I been satisfied. The satisfaction of one desire has led me to crave another even better desire and then to lust after one even better that. I’m worn out chasing after my desires. I can see that.

Would you agree that there are good and bad desires? I suppose so. You have a very dim view of desires. Yes, I do. Where have your desires come from? My desires have come from what I wanted or at least what I thought I wanted. You might say that my desires have come from my appetites. Where have your wants or appetites come from? That’s a good question. My wants and appetites have come from the world and all that it has to offer. Name some of your past wants and appetites. I have wanted and had an appetite for pleasure, prestige, position, power and possessions. Once you have tasted something from your wants and appetites have you found that to be unsatisfying? That’s right. Your dissatisfaction has driven you on to pursue one want or appetite after another. That’s true. It’s like you have been chasing a mirage that you will never be able to catch. That’s it exactly. So, you want to give up on your wants and desires. Yes, I do. That sounds good to me.

I have something to say to you. What’s that? It is a good thing to give up on wants and desires and appetites that come from the world. None of them will ever satisfy you. None of them were ever meant to be the pursuit of your life. Now, I know that. Now, you are the pursuit of my life. I want to know and love you. I want to know and do your will. I want to walk in your ways. I want to live the life that you have called me to live. It is now my joy and delight to follow and serve you. Do you believe that I will give you new desires in your heart? Yes, I do. Why is that? You have already been filling my heart with new desires as I love, follow and serve you. That’s right. Do you believe that I will both give and grant you new desires in your heart? Yes Lord, I do.

Lord, for too long my heart has been filled with desires that come from the world. I have wanted all that it has to offer. No more. No longer. I want you. I want the life you have for me. I will delight myself in you. Give and grant me desires that come from you. Amen
