Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Becoming Like Christ – Day 225 – Psalm 90:12 – Teach Us To Number Our Days- Growing As Disciples

Teach us to number our days aright, that we may gain a heart of wisdom. Psalm 90:12 (NIV)

Time

There is no doubt about it. There is no doubt about what? I have unwisely wasted my time. I have misspent many of my days. Why is that a problem? What difference does that make? Don’t you have plenty of time? No, I don’t have plenty of time. In fact, I have a very limited number of days. It is very good that you have come to this realization. What will you do now that you have come to realize the value of your time? Well, I will certainly take time to evaluate how I am using my time. Maybe though, I should not even be calling it my time. What would you like to call it? I would like to call it the time you have given me to use. Why is that? I want to make wise use of the time you have given to me. I know that you have a purpose and plan for my life. I know that you have given me assignments. I know that you have things you would like me to accomplish. How I use the time you have given to me will certainly have something to say about my ability to be able to go and do your will. Yes, it will.

So, you are going to evaluate how you use your time? Yes, I am. Even a very quick look at how I spend my time will help me to identify obvious and unfruitful time wasters. I will eliminate obvious time wasters from my life. That sounds like a good start. What next? I’m not sure. That is where you come in. How so? I need your help. I need your wisdom. The demands on my time are almost limitless. If I had a dozen lives to life, I could probably find reasonable and useful ways to spend all those hours. But you have only one life to live. That is true. So, I need your wisdom to help me to know how to live it. I want you to teach me how to number my seconds and minutes and hours and days so that I will use them most fruitfully for your kingdom and glory. I don’t want to spend my time by saying yes to something of little value when I could say yes to something of far greater value. I want you to teach me how to best use the time you have given me so I will be able to go and do your will. That is your prayer? Yes, that is my prayer. How often will you ask me this prayer? I will ask you this prayer every step of my way through life as I follow and serve you. That will be very good. You will hear me answering this prayer as you keep on following and serving me. I will give you a heart of wisdom. I will guide your steps. I will show you how to use your time. Keep on following me. Keep on relying on my help. Keeping on praying to me. Yes Lord, I will. That will be very good.

Lord, I have wasted so much time. I have wasted time on what will be of no value. Give me a heart of wisdom. Help me to number my days. Help me to know how to make the best use of my time so I can bear fruit for your kingdom and bring glory to your name. Amen

Key Question… What are ways that God has guided you to make the best use of your time?

Teach Us To Number Our Days

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Wisdom - Psalm 90:12 - Teach Us To Number Our Days - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Wisdom – Psalm 90:12 – Teach Us To Number Our Days – Growing As Disciples

Teach us to number our days aright, that we may gain a heart of wisdom. Psalm 90:12 (NIV)

Life Is Short

You have a very good prayer in your heart and on your mind today. Tell me what it is, say it aloud to me. Let yourself hear it, being asked, as a gift to you from me.

I am asking for a heart full of wisdom. I would like to be able to present my heart to you as a heart filled with wisdom. Yes, that’s very good. Is there a problem? Yes, as a matter of fact, there is. I can’t give you what I don’t have. What do you mean by that? I don’t have wisdom from within myself. Have I not been giving you wisdom as you have drawn near to me? Yes, you have and for that I cannot adequately express how grateful and thankful that I am. You have changed the entire course of my life as you have given wisdom to me. All my thoughts, desires, and pursuits have changed because you have changed my heart and transformed my mind. If I had reached the limit of the amount of wisdom that I was allowed to have, I would be fully and completely satisfied. Do you think that you are close to your limit? There is no chance of that. It’s very good that you know that. Never stop coming to me to ask for wisdom. I will never turn you away. It is my delight to give you wisdom.

Let’s talk about numbering your days. That would be great. Are you fully aware of the fact that your days on earth are numbered? I think so. But, you’re not sure? Maybe not. What would you do differently if you knew that tomorrow was your last day on earth?   I’d be more focused and urgent about getting done what you have given me to do for you. You would be more cautious about how you used your time? Yes, I would. You would make sure that you came to me to ask me how I wanted you to use your remaining time? That’s for certain. You wouldn’t waste large blocks of time doing what has very little importance? No, I would not. Your focus would be on accomplishing whatever would bear fruit for eternity? Yes, my focus would be much sharper on bearing fruit for you than it is now. What then are you learning about the wise use of your time? You are showing me that it is important that I don’t waste valuable time that you have given to me. Living, fully aware of the brevity of my life will help me to come to you to ask you how you want me to best use my time. Your instructions will help me to number, value, and fully use each day so that I can wisely use it for your kingdom and glory. Yes, that’s true and today I will give you a heart of wisdom.

Lord, I have wasted so much time and squandered so many days. Teach me to number my days so that I will wisely use the time that I have been given to serve you and bear an abundance of fruit for your kingdom and glory.  Amen

Key Question…  What has the Lord shown you about how He would like you to wisely use the days you have been given?

Living It Out…   Ask the Lord to teach you to number your days so that you will wisely use your time to serve Him.

Seeing It Happen… Have faith that the Lord will show you how to wisely use your time and each day for His glory.

Get Ready To Share…  Share with another person or your small group how you are seeking to live each day of your life for the glory of God.

Prayer To Bless Others…  May you ask the Lord to teach you to number your days so you will wisely use the time you have been given.

The Prayer Filled Life - Day 102 - Psalm 90-12 - Teach Us - 4 Page Discipleship Study Guide

The Prayer Filled Life – Day 102 – Psalm 90-12 – Teach Us – 4 Page Discipleship Study Guide

Teach us to number our days aright, that we may gain a heart of wisdom. Psalm 90:12 (NIV)

Heart Of Wisdom

That is what I want. That is my desire. That is my prayer. What do you want? What is your desire? What is your prayer? I want a heart of wisdom. What would you do with a heart of wisdom? Where would a heart of wisdom lead you? What would a heart of wisdom give you to do? Those are great questions that are worthy of my deepest thoughts. Fortunately, they are not new questions or new thoughts to me. You have put those questions before me in many ways and at various times before. So, what are your deepest thoughts in answer to my questions? A heart of wisdom will help me to live a life without regrets. A heart of wisdom will help me to know and do your will. A heart of wisdom will guide the entire course of my life. A heart of wisdom will help me to make the wisest use of every day that you have given me to live. A heart of wisdom will help me to bear fruit for your kingdom and bring glory to your name. You have answered well. I have only answered well because the heart of wisdom you have been giving to me. It pleases me that you know this to be true.

Let’s talk more about your receiving all that you are asking of me. Let’s talk more about you gaining a heart of wisdom. I’m listening attentively to you. Well then, you have answered one of my questions without my asking it of you. Listening attentively to me is how you will gain a heart of wisdom. Of that, I have no doubt. How will you make yourself available to me? How will you listen attentively to me? That is a condition of my receiving what I am asking of you, isn’t it? It would be foolish to think that you would give me a heart of wisdom if I failed to listen attentively to you. That is correct. So, I will set aside a daily time and place to meet with you in prayer. I will set aside a daily time and place to meet with you in worship. I will set aside a daily time and place to meet with you in your word. In this set time and place, I will listen to all that you have to say to me. My listening to you will not stop in our set time and place of meeting. I know that you will use our set time and place of meeting to help me to hear your voice guiding through the moments of my day. You are correct, as you keep on listening to me, I will give you a heart of wisdom and teach you to number your days and wisely live the life I have given you to live. Thank you, Lord. I will keep on listening to you. That will be very good.

Lord, I will stop to listen to you. I will wait for your teaching. I will receive your instruction. I will follow your guidance. I will rely on you completely. Give me a heart of wisdom. Teach me to number my days so that my life will be wisely spent in your service. Amen

Key Question…  How are you making it your practice to listen attentively to the Lord teaching you?

Living It Out…  Rely on the Lord to teach you so you will have a heart of wisdom.

Seeing It Happen…  Have faith that the Lord will teach you and give you a heart of wisdom as you rely on Him.

Get Ready To Share…  Share with another person or your small group how the Lord has been teaching you and giving you a heart of wisdom.

Prayer To Bless Others…  May you allow the Lord to teach you so you will have a heart of wisdom.

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Promises – Day 162 – Psalm 90:12 – Number Our Days – Growing As Disciples

So teach us to number our days that we may get a heart of wisdom. Psalm 90:12 (ESV)

Well Spent

What would be the best use of your time? How will you make sure that you are not foolishly misusing your days? How will you know if you are wisely using the life you have been given? When you look back, from eternity, over your entire life, what will you be glad you spent your time doing? That is a question that makes my head spin. That is a lot to think about. Is thinking about the answers to these questions well worth your time and energy? Without, a doubt, these questions are well worth my consideration. Why is that? I have been given a limited number of days. Life is brief. My life is somewhat like the snap of the fingers or the blink of an eye. My life is like the morning mist that burns off during the heat of the day. Life races by. I am here today. Before I know it, I will be gone tomorrow. Hopefully, not literally. I would like many more days and weeks and months and years to serve you. But I know that I have but one brief life to live. I don’t want to waste it. I don’t want to foolishly misuse or misspend it. Those are good thoughts. You have wise desires within you. Maybe so. But I still desperately need your help. How do you need my help? I need your wisdom to help me to wisely use my days. You see, I most want my life to bear fruit for your kingdom and bring glory to your name. I want to accomplish your purposes and fulfill your plans for my life. I want to be able to go and do all that you ask of me. I want to know and do your will. Even more than that, I have one overpowering desire. What is that? I want to know you. I don’t want to know about you. I want to know you intimately. I also want you to know me. I want to live and walk through life with you. I want to hear your voice guiding me to where you want me to go, giving me what you want me to do. If I can say that I know you and you know me, then I will know that my life was well spent. Then when I look back from eternity, over my entire life, I know that I will have no regrets. So, that is my prayer. That is my desire. That is my request. Help me to know you. Help me to do your will. Help me to live my life with and for you. I will most certainly answer this prayer and this desire of yours. Your life will be well spent in knowing and loving and following and serving me. Thank you, Lord.

Lord, I know without a doubt that my days in this life are limited. Teach me to number my days. Help me to use each day wisely. Help me to use my days in a way that bears fruit for your kingdom and brings glory to your name. Guide me. Use me. Help me. Amen

Number Our Days

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Prayer - Psalm 90:12 - Number Our Days - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Prayer – Psalm 90:12 – Number Our Days – Growing As Disciples

Teach us to number our days aright, that we may gain a heart of wisdom. Psalm 90:12 (NIV)

Teach Me

That’s exactly what I want. What is exactly what you want? I want you to teach me to number my days. Why is that? What’s the hurry? That’s it exactly. There is some urgency. I don’t have forever to live this life. I have a very brief life and a limited number of days. It is about time you have come to this realization. Why do you say that? You tell me. I have lived my life, on this earth, as if it would last forever. I have probably lived in denial that my life on this earth would one day come to an end. How has living in that kind of denial impacted your life? I have wasted a lot of hours. I have misspent many days. I have not made the best use of my time.

What would you like to do differently? I would like to ask you to teach me to number my days. I would like you to help me to make the best use of my time. How would you like to use your time? I would like to use my time doing what is pleasing to you. I want to know your will and walk in your ways. I want to bear fruit for your kingdom and bring glory to your name. I want to be able to look back over life and know that both you and I would say that it was well spent. That is quite a lofty goal. Yes, it is. I certainly cannot accomplish that goal by myself. Why is that? I know I don’t have the wisdom I will need to live the life I know you are calling me to live. I desperately need your help. Yes, you do.

So, you are asking me to give you a heart of wisdom? Yes, I am. You are asking me to teach you to number your days? Yes, I am. You are asking me to help you to wisely spend your life? Yes, I am. You are asking me these things because you want to know and do my will. That’s right. You are asking me these things because you want to bear fruit for my kingdom and bring glory to my name. That’s true. You are asking me these things so that one day both you and I will say that your life was well spent. That’s it exactly. What do you think are the chances that I will hear and answer these prayers of yours? I would say that there is a hundred percent chance that you will hear and answer these prayers of mine. That is one hundred percent correct. I will give you a heart of wisdom. I will teach you to number your days. I will help you to know and do my will. Thank you, Lord.

Lord, I have lived as if my life would last forever. I have not considered the fact that I have a limited number of days to live on this earth. How foolish is that? Help me to number my days and wisely use the time I have been given. I want to be fruitful for you. Amen
