To Say No

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Character - Titus 2:11-14 - To Say No - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Character – Titus 2:11-14 – To Say No – Growing As Disciples

For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men. It teaches us to say “No” to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age, while we wait for the blessed hope–the glorious appearing of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ, who gave himself for us to redeem us from all wickedness and to purify for himself a people that are his very own, eager to do what is good. Titus 2:11-14 (NIV)

Yes And No

You have said yes to me. You have asked me to come into your life. You have asked me to be your Savior and Lord. You have told me that you have had enough of your old life. You no longer want to live according to the patterns, values and practices of the world. You have told me that you want to leave your old life of sin behind you. You have said that you want to live a completely new life in me. Do I have this correct? Is what I am saying true? Yes, I want to live a completely new life in you. You are my Savior and Lord. I no longer want my life to conform to the world. I want to live the new life that you have called me to live with and for you. That is very good.

Your decision to follow me was a one-time decision that will be followed up with many affirmations. You will live a life of continually saying yes to me and no to the world. These affirmations will come moment-by-moment and day-by-day. You will be tested and challenged and tried in and through the circumstances of life. You will be asked again and again if you will continue to leave the world behind you. You will be asked over and over if you will continue to love, follow and serve me.  You will be asked to live an upright and godly life that will shine brightly for me in the darkness of this world. You will not be alone in answering these questions. I will be with you to help you. I will continue to teach you to say “no” to ungodliness as you continue to say “yes” to me.

I have redeemed your life.  I have forgiven you of your sins. I have cleansed you of your unrighteousness. You are mine.  I will teach you. I will train you. I will change your heart. I will transform your mind. I will mold and shape your life. Don’t grow weary. Don’t become faint. Keep your heart and mind and life on me. I will sustain you. I will strengthen you. Will you be eager to go where I guide you? Will you be eager to do what I ask of you? Yes Lord, I will. That will be very good.

Lord, thank you for your grace that made salvation available to me. You have taught me to say “no” to ungodliness and worldly passions while saying “yes” to living the life you called me to live. I eagerly await the day of your return and final redemption. Amen

Key Question…  Why is saying “no” to worldliness and “yes” to godliness something that you eagerly do?

Living It Out…  Say “no” to worldly passions so you can say “yes” to living the life Christ has called you to live.

Seeing It Happen…  Have faith that God will teach you to say “no” to worldly passions as you keep on saying “yes” to Him.

Get Ready To Share…  Share with another person or your small group how God has taught you to say “no” to the world and “yes’ to Him.

Prayer To Bless Others…  May you say “no” to worldly passions so you can say “yes” to living your life for Jesus Christ.

God’s Will

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Character - 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 - God's WiIl - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Character – 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 – God’s WiIl – Growing As Disciples

Be joyful always; pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus. 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 (NIV)

Stayed Focused

What has your attention? What has your focus? I’m not sure what you mean. What is occupying your thoughts? Can you be a little more specific? Are your thoughts set solely on the things of this life? Is your perspective entirely earthly? You do realize that this life is fleeting? You are just passing through this life. You are here today. You will be gone tomorrow. Your life on this earth will go by like a blink of an eye or a snap of your fingers. Are these thoughts supposed to help me in some way? Am I supposed to be encouraged by these thoughts? I thought that my current circumstances were bad enough. Now, the brevity of my life is getting added on to my dismal circumstances. This does seem like too much weight to bear. Think again.

You are missing the point. This life is like a mist or a vapor that will quickly pass away. You might even say that this life is like a mirage. What you see now seems so real. What is before you will soon disappear. This life is not all that there is. You have so much more to look forward to. You are thinking earthly thoughts from an earthly perspective. You could be thinking heavenly thoughts from a heavenly perspective. Thinking heavenly thoughts would entirely change your perspective. How so? You have eternal life to look forward to. The pain and suffering of this temporary life is nothing compared to the joy and splendor that you will experience forever in heaven. That is a game changer for my thoughts. Yes, it is.

Your future in heaven should also be a game change for your actions. How so? Time is short. There is much work for you to do in this life. The harvest is plentiful. The workers are few. I want you to bear an abundance of fruit for my kingdom. How so? You can go where I send you. You can do what I ask of you. You can be a bright and shining light for me in the world. I can use you to draw others to me. That’s what I want. That is my desire and hope and prayer. I am sure of that. I can see that in you. You will shine brighter and bear more fruit for me if you stay focused and remain joyful, pray continually and give thanks in all circumstances. That, I will do. That will be very good.

Lord, thank you that you have given me so much for which I can be thankful. As I go through difficult circumstances I will keep my heart and mind focused on the life I have with you now and forever. Help me to be joyful, prayerful and thankful as I follow you. Amen

Be

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Character - Romans 12:12 - Be - Constant In Prayer Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Character – Romans 12:12 – Be – Constant In Prayer Growing As Disciples

Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer. Romans 12:12 (NIV)

Help

On my own I can be none of these things. What things? I cannot be joyful in hope, patient in affliction or faithful in prayer. Why do you say that? On my own I have been the opposite of each of these. I have been unhappy in discouragement. I have been impatient in affliction. I have been unfaithful in prayer. So, your track record tells you that you will need my help and strength and endurance to be all these things. That’s right. Do you feel like you are on your own? Do you believe that I will be with you to help you? Do you know that I am molding and shaping your life? Do you know that I will make you into the person that I have called you to be? I know that I am not alone. I believe that you are molding and shaping my life. That’s good.

Are you encouraged to know that I am working in your life? Can you have hope and joy in knowing that I am like an artist molding and shaping you and making you into one of my masterpieces? Do you trust my work? Do you trust my skill? Do you trust my hand? Can you rely on my timing? Yes, I trust you. I can have hope and joy, knowing that I am the work of your hands. That’s good.

You know that you will experience pain and suffering and affliction in this life. I suffered, you will suffer. I felt pain, you will feel pain. I was afflicted, you will be afflicted. Does any of this surprise you? No, it does not. You also know when you have grown the most in life. You also know when you have drawn near and grown closest to me. Yes, I do. When is that? When have you made the most progress in your life? When have you drawn nearest to me? Both, have happened when I have gone through pain and suffering and affliction in life. That’s right. Can you then, be patient in pain and suffering and affliction? Yes Lord, I can be patient. That’s good.

You mentioned to me that you will need my help and strength and endurance. Yes, I did. How will you go about receiving help and strength and endurance from me? I’m not sure what you mean. What must you do if you want to receive strength and hope and endurance from me? I must ask you for these things if I want to receive them. Will your prayers for these things be one and done prayers of yours? No, I will continually come to ask you for all that I need. Will you be faithful in prayer? Yes, I will be faithful in prayer. That will be very good.

Lord, I will keep on following you. I will be completely devoted to you. I will follow you to wherever you lead. I will do whatever you ask of me. With all your help and strength, I will be joyful in hope, patient in affliction and faithful in prayer. I will rely on you. Amen

Grace Given Me

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Character - Romans 12:3 - Grace Given Me - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Character – Romans 12:3 – Grace Given Me – Growing As Disciples

For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the measure of faith God has given you. Romans 12:3 (NIV)

Humbly Serve

Who do you think that you are? That is a good question Yes, it is. It is important for you to have a balanced assessment of who you are. I’m not sure what you mean by that. Have you ever thought too highly of yourself? You’ve got to be kidding me. I can’t believe you are even asking me that question. Why is that? I have had a major problem with thinking that I am better than other people. I would never say that out loud. I might even try to stifle that thought in my mind. I might, in my less self-aware moments, deny that it is true. You have had some indications that it is true, haven’t you? Yes. I would like you to tell me what has helped you to see that you have had a pride filled assessment of yourself. How do you know for sure that you have thought you were better than others? What could possibly explain my tendency to interrupt people? Why do I often dominate conversations by talking too much? Why do I often focus on what I am about to say, rather than, listening to what others are saying? Do I think my thoughts are more important? Do I think that my words have more to add to the conversation? Am I more interesting? I don’t like these questions. I like the answers even less. I could go on. Why am I so poor at remembering other people’s names? Are others unimportant? Are others not special? Yes, I can see that you are deeply concerned with the self-important attitude that have had in your life. That’s an understatement.

What attitude would you like to have about yourself? I would like to think that I am special. I am not more special than others. I am equally special. You made uniquely made me. You uniquely made others. You have given me special gifts and talents and abilities. You have given others equally special gifts and talents and abilities. You have called me, along with others, to be a humble servant. I want to love and serve you and others with all my heart and mind and soul and strength. I want to be used by you. I want to be able to recognize how you are using others. I want to know that I have something very valuable to contribute as I serve you and others. I want to be able to recognize how others are valuably contributing what they have, to serve you and others.

I don’t want to stand out from others in serving you. I want to stand with others in serving you. That is a very good attitude for you to have about yourself and others. Where do you think this attitude has come from? It comes from you. You are helping me to know your thoughts and walk in your ways. Yes, I am.

Lord, on one hand, I know I am no big deal. I am not better than others. My gifts, and talents and abilities are not superior to what others have received. Yet, I am special to you. You have called me to humbly serve you and others. For that, I am so thankful. Amen

Righteous Life

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Character - James 1:19-21 - Righteous Life - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Character – James 1:19-21 – Righteous Life – Growing As Disciples

My dear brothers, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, for man’s anger does not bring about the righteous life that God desires. Therefore, get rid of all moral filth and the evil that is so prevalent and humbly accept the word planted in you, which can save you. James 1:19-21 (NIV)

Pride

Do you want to live the life that I have called you to live? Yes, I want to live the life that you have called me to live. Who would say no to such a question? You would be surprised. There is something very important that you must do if you want to live the life that I have called you to live. What’s that? You must set aside your pride. You will never be able to live the godly and righteous life that I am calling you to live if you do not set aside your pride. Why is that? It is your pride that makes you slow to listen and quick to speak. It is your pride that leads you to think that you know it all. Do you know it all? Certainly not, I don’t know it all. Are your thoughts and words and opinions more valuable than others? I wouldn’t say so. At least you are smart enough not to say so. What do you mean by that? When you are so slow to listen and quick to speak isn’t it because you believe that your thoughts and opinions are so valuable, perhaps more valuable than what others have to offer? Is that really true? Is that what has been at work in my life? Have I been so filled with pride that I don’t really listen to others. Is that why I’m thinking about what I might say next rather than listening to what others are saying now? You tell me. I think I have been filled with pride. Pride has led me to be slow to listen and quick to speak. Was that hard to admit? It was hard to see and hard to admit. But, it gets worse. How does it get worse? Not only has my pride made me slow to listen and quick to speak, it has also made me quick to get angry. Pride has not only led me to think that I know it all. It has also led me to think that I am always right. Pridefully thinking that I am always right is a quick and easy step to anger. Why is that? Not everyone thinks I’m always right. That is hard to imagine. You’re kidding me, right? Yes, I am kidding you. It should come as no great revelation that you are not always right. It should come as no big surprise that others will disagree with your thoughts and words. So where does all this leave you? What must you do if you want to live the life I am calling you to live? It has come clearly to me now. I see your point. I agree with you. I must set aside my pride if I want to live the godly and righteous life that you are calling me to live. That is what I will do. That is very good.

Lord, I have been filled with pride. I have been slow to listen. I have been quick to speak. I have been quick to become angry. Use your word to change my heart, transform my mind, and guide my life. Help me to live the godly life you have called me to live. Amen

Living Sacrifices

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Character - Romans 12:1 - Living Sacrifices - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Character – Romans 12:1 – Living Sacrifices – Growing As Disciples

Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God–this is your spiritual act of worship. Romans 12:1 (NIV)

Devoted

I consider it to be no sacrifice to wholeheartedly offer myself to you. You don’t, why is that? If I didn’t want to offer myself to you and I did, that would be quite a sacrifice. But, I am happy to offer myself as a sacrifice to you. You are, why is that? I am grateful. I am thankful. You have done so much for me. Like what? You rescued me from a life without you. I was walking a dark and sin filled path, away from you. I was living as your enemy. I am sure there were times when I mocked your followers. I am positive that I took your name in vain. I thought I didn’t want you. I was sure that I didn’t need you. I was self-centered. I was self-reliant, I was self–sufficient or so I thought. But, I was wrong. I was foolish. It didn’t take me long to realize that I was living a bruised and battered and broken life. Soon enough, I became desperate. I was wounded. I was hurt. I was empty and all alone, or so I thought. But, you were there. You were watching. You were waiting. You were welcoming. You called me to come to you. Yes, I did. You bound up all my wounds. You healed my body and restored my soul. You forgave my sins. You cleansed me of my unrighteousness. Yes, I did. You gave me a new life of salvation to live with you. So now, I love you because you first loved me. I want to live my life with and for you. I want to follow you to where you lead me. I want to do whatever you ask of me. My heart and mind and life are filled with thankfulness. I love you with all my heart and mind and soul. In every way on every day I want to live a life that is pleasing to you. It is my pleasure and joy to give myself to you. That is why I consider it to be no sacrifice to give myself wholeheartedly to you. Every day, I want to offer my whole self to you as a living sacrifice. I want all my thoughts, words and deeds to be an expression of worship to you. That is very good. That is very pleasing to me. I will lead you. I will guide you. I will use you. Follow me. Yes Lord, I will.

Heavenly Father, thank you for showing me your mercy. You offered your salvation to me as a gift. I now love you with all my heart and mind and soul and strength. I am wholeheartedly devoted to you. I will go where you guide me and do what you ask of me. Amen

Be Strong And Courageous

Discipleship Study - Character - Joshua 1:8-9 - Be Strong And Courageous- Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Study – Character – Joshua 1:8-9 – Be Strong And Courageous- Growing As Disciples

Do not let this Book of the Law depart from your mouth; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful. Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go.” Joshua 1:8-9 (NIV)

My Promises

How will you be encouraged? How will you be strengthened? What will make you courageous? How will you be careful to go and do everything I ask of you? What will help you to be prosperous and successful? What will you hold on to through all the ups and downs and twists and turns of life? I know what I will not hold on to. What’s that? I will not hold on to my gifts and talents and abilities. I will not hold on to my education and training. I will not hold on to my money and material possessions. I will not hold on to my strength and health. I will not hold on to my past accomplishments. Not one of these things will sustain me through all the twists and turns and ups and downs of life. That’s true.

You know quite clearly what you will not hold on to when you go through trials in life. Yes, I do. That’s good. Do you know what you will hold on to when you face all the storms of life? Yes, I do. I will hold on to you. I will hold on to your promises. I will hold on to your word. How will you do that? I will hide your word in my heart. I will store your word in my mind. I will meditate on your word day and night. I will allow your word to guide my life. Your word will train me. Your word will instruct me. Yes, it will. Your word will teach me what I need to know. What do you need to know? I need to know that you will be with me. You will help me. You will lift me up and encourage me. You will strengthen me. You will make me courageous. You will help me to be prosperous and successful. You will make me able to go and do your will. Yes, I will. That’s not all. What else? Your word will help me to do what I need to do.  What do you need to do? I need to trust you. I need to rely on you. I need to put your word into practice. I need go and do whatever you ask of me. Yes, you do. That is what I will do. I will rely on you. I will hold on to your promises. That will be very good.

Lord, I will meditate on your word day and night. Your word will be in my heart, on my mind and lived out in my life. I will think, speak and act on your word. Help me to be careful, strong and courageous. Be with me wherever I go and in whatever I do for you. Amen

Love Must Be Sincere

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Character - Romans 12:9-10 - Love Must Be Sincere - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Character – Romans 12:9-10 – Love Must Be Sincere – Growing As Disciples

Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. Be devoted to one another in brotherly love. Honor one another above yourselves. Romans 12:9-10 (NIV)

Lovingly Devoted

What does real love look like?  How do you know if you sincerely love other people? Is it enough to have a loving attitude without taking any action? I’m not sure how to answer these questions. Why is that? I’m not sure that I have loved others sincerely. In fact, I’m pretty sure that I haven’t loved others sincerely. What makes you think that? Those words “be devoted” are staring me in the face. I’m not sure how devoted I have been to serving others. Are you kidding me? Can’t you see how much of your time and energies are being devoted to serving others? It looks to me like you are devoting your life to serving others. Really, it does? Yes, it does.

Look at how much of your life is being spent in service to others. Would you say that you use a little bit or most of your time in service to others? I don’t want to take credit or pat myself on the back. I know you don’t want that. You have just the opposite problem. What’s that? You aren’t encouraged by the fact that you are devoted to serving me and others. Your devotion to me and others should bring you joy and peace. Instead, you have this false guilt that you can and should be doing more. I will ask you to do more for me. You can be sure of that. But, I don’t want you to carry false guilt that you haven’t done enough.  Do you know what this false guilt will do to you? No, not really. It will discourage you and make you want to give up and quit. You will lose the peace and joy of being devoted to serving me and others. Your work will become hard labor that you will not be able to sustain. Guilt induced hard labor is an evil that you must hate and reject. Love motivated devotion to me and others is a joy to be welcomed and savored. This kind of love and devotion will lift you up and encourage and strengthen you to do even more for me and others. But the desire to do more will not come from guilt or a sense of obligation. You can’t make yourself to be lovingly devoted to serving me or others. That is something that I will do in, for, and through you. I’d like that. Yes, I know.

My love is going to do a new work in you. How is that? I want you to grow in the way that you honor others above yourself. You may have noticed that I have already been teaching you how to take a step back so that others can take a step forward. Yes, I’ve noticed. I want you to encourage others in their love and devotion to me.  I want you to show others how they can be devoted to serving me. I want them to see you honoring others above yourself because you are devoted to serving me. There is one more thing that I also want others to see in you. What’s that? I want them to see the joy and peace that is yours because you are lovingly devoted to serving me. Will you allow me to do this work in and through your life? Yes Lord, I will. That will be very good.

Lord, I will hate what is evil and hold on tightly to what is good. I will pursue the life you have called me to live. I will devote all my efforts to loving and honoring others deeply from my heart. Use all my thoughts, words and deeds to bless the lives of others. Amen

With All Your Heart

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Character - Colossians 3:23-24 - With All Your Heart - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Character – Colossians 3:23-24 – With All Your Heart – Growing As Disciples

Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving. Colossians 3:23-24 (NIV)

Serving Me

Do you want to serve me? Yes, I want to serve you. Who would say otherwise? You would be very surprised who would say otherwise by the inaction of their lives. Many do not really want to serve me. They may say otherwise but not back up their words with action. Many are sitting on their hands, with no idea of how to serve me. How will you serve me? I’m not sure what you mean? Will you pick and choose how you will serve me? No, I will go wherever you guide me. I will do whatever you ask of me. I will be ready to go where you guide me to do whatever you ask of me, at a moment’s notice. You won’t find me passively sitting on my hands, resting on my laurels. That’s good.

How will you know how where I am leading you? How will you know what I am asking of you? That’s a good question. I will need to be watching and waiting for my opportunities to go and serve you. I will need to be expectant rather than reluctant. What do you mean by that? I will need to be predisposed to action rather than sitting passively, on my hands. I know that you will have a much easier time guiding me if I’m ready to be put in motion. You may only give me a quiet whisper or a soft nudge to go and serve you. That’s true. If I’m not expectantly watching and waiting, I may miss your guidance to go and serve you. That’s right.

What kind of effort will you give when you go and serve me? I will give you my very best effort. I know that all my labor in this life is for you. How hard and well I work will either be a good or bad testimony to others in this world. I want others to clearly see that you are working in and through my life. I want my service to you to bear an abundance of fruit for your kingdom. I want the way that I go about my work to bring glory to your name. I want to be able to accomplish your purposes and fulfill your plans. So, I will always be ready to go and serve you with everything that is within me. That will be very good.

Lord, I will not sit around doing nothing. I will not give half-hearted efforts in serving you. I will go and do all that you ask of me with all my heart and mind and soul and strength. Bear eternal, lasting fruit through my life. Use me to accomplish your purposes. Amen

Heart Reflects

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Character - Proverbs 27:19 - Heart Reflects - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Character – Proverbs 27:19 – Heart Reflects – Growing As Disciples

As water reflects a face, so a man’s heart reflects the man. Proverbs 27:19 (NIV)

Your Heart

Lord, what do I look like? How can I know? Is that a hard question? You have looked down into water many times. Yes, I have done that many times. What have you seen? I have seen my reflection looking back at me. That’s right. Does your reflection give you a good or poor picture of what you look like? My reflection gives me a very precise picture of what I look like. Yes, it does. You can trust what your reflection from the water is showing you about what you look like. Yes, I can. I doubt that you were wondering what you looked like physically. No, I wasn’t. I want to know what look like as a person. What do you mean by that? I want to know about who I am. I want to know more about my character.  Do you want to know the condition of your heart? Yes, that’s exactly what I want to know. Are you sure? Yes, I’m sure.

Just as water reflects your face, your thoughts, words, and deeds will reflect the condition of your heart. You can know the condition of your heart by the thoughts that you think. You can know the condition of your heart through the words that you speak. You can know the condition of your heart through the actions that you take. Your thoughts, words and deeds will give you a very clear picture of the condition of your heart. Just as you trusted your reflection on the water to give you a physical picture, you can also trust that your thoughts, words and actions will give you a spiritual picture of the condition of your heart. Oh, that’s great. You don’t sound too excited. I’m not. Why not?

If my thoughts, words and actions are giving me an accurate picture of the spiritual condition of my heart then I am in desperate need of your help. Why is that? I am not entirely happy with the thoughts of my mind, words of my mouth and actions of my life. I have thought, said and done things that I deeply regret. You say to me that you have sinned in your thoughts, words and actions? Yes, without a doubt. Have you confessed these sins to me? Yes, I have confessed these sins to you. Then you are forgiven and cleansed of all your sins. I have made you clean.  I have given you a clean heart. You have a fresh start. You have a new life to live. Don’t ever think that you will be able to live a perfect life. You have and will sin in your thoughts, words and actions. Keep on confessing your sins to me. Keep on allowing me to cleanse your heart and mind and life. Keep on following me to where I lead you. Keep on doing what I ask of you. I will be changing your heart, transforming your mind and guiding your life every day as you love, follow and serve me. You will live the life that I have called you to live. Your heart will reflect that I am working in you, for you and though you. Now that, is exciting! Yes, it is.

Lord, I know all my thoughts, words and actions reflect the condition of my heart. Thank you, for forgiving my sin and cleansing me of all my unrighteousness. Keep changing my heart and mind. Let my heart reflect that you are working in, for and through me. Amen
