Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – The Mind – Psalm 139:23-24 – Search Me, Oh God – Growing As Disciples

Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting. Psalm 139:23-24 (NIV)

Change Me

You know me. There is nothing that I have thought, said or done that is a secret to you. You know me from the inside out. Nothing about me has escaped your notice. You know me better than I know myself. You know what I will say or do even before I have spoken a word or done a thing. That’s right. I have a question for you. Go ahead, I’m listening. If you know me so well what sense does it make for me to ask you to search me? You have already searched me. You already know me. Yes, I do. Your invitation is what is important to me. Your invitation tells me even more about you. Like what?

Your invitation for me to search your heart and mind and life tells me that you want to live in ways that are pleasing to me. You could have tried to hide yourself from me. That would make no sense. Such an effort would be ridiculously impossible. Nothing can be hidden from you. That’s right. From the Garden of Eden and the fall of mankind onward many have tried to hide themselves and their sin from me. Many have fearfully tried to run away from their sin, guilt and shame. That is not pleasing to me. That is not my desire. That is not my plan. My son came into the world so that sin could be forgiven. He wiped away guilt and shame for all those who received His forgiveness and cleansing. You have received my Son as your Lord and Savior. Yes, that’s true. You are living the new life that you have been called to live. Yes, I am. It is your desire to live in ways that please me. Yes, it is. As part of your desire to live in ways that please me, you are asking me to search your heart and mind and life. Yes, I am.

Why are you unafraid for me to search your heart and mind and life? Are you living a perfect life? Will I find nothing in your life that is not pleasing me to me? No, I’m sure that you will find things that I have thought, said or done that are not pleasing to you. I’m inviting you to not only search me. I am inviting you to change me. I want you to mold and shape me into the person you have called me to be. I want to live the life that you have called me to live. I’m trusting that you will change me. I believe that you will work in and through me. My life is in your hands. Yes, it is. I will search you. I will change you.

Lord, search my heart and mind and life. Show me if there are any thoughts or ways in me that are offensive to you. I want to live my life in every way that is pleasing to you. Lead me in your way everlasting. Help me to calmly live my life according to your will. Amen

Key Question…  What benefit would there be for God to find and point out an offensive way in your heart and mind?

Investigate My Life

The Prayer Filled Life - Day 92 - Psalm 139-23-24 - Investigate My Life - Growing As Disciples

The Prayer Filled Life – Day 92 – Psalm 139-23-24 – Investigate My Life – Growing As Disciples

Investigate my life, O God, find out everything about me; Cross-examine and test me, get a clear picture of what I’m about; See for yourself whether I’ve done anything wrong— then guide me on the road to eternal life. Psalm 139:23-24 (MSG)

Examine Me

That is what I want you to do. What do you want me to do? I want you to examine my life. I want you to a long and hard and close look at my life. Aren’t you worried about what I will find? Not at all. You are that confident? Yes, I am that confident. Wait, let me be clear, I am not confident in myself, that would be ridiculous. My confidence is in you. What kind of confidence do you have in me? I am confident that you love and care for me. I am confident that you are molding and shaping my life. I am confident that you are and will continue to make me into the person you want me to become. I am like a lump of clay in your hands. So, I am positive that you will see many things that need to be changed in me when you take a long and hard and close look at my life. I know it is silly and foolish for me to speaking in this way. You know more about me than I know about myself. You know what needs changing in me even before the thought of asking you to examine me entered my mind. Yes, I do. Why then bother asking me to examine your life? It is the asking that you want from me. It is my welcoming you to examine my life that is pleasing to you. It is my willingness to submit myself to you that brings you joy. Yes, it does. You must know more than you have already said. Yes, I do. Tell me what you know. You have been and are and will continue to do a good work in me. You are helping me to become like you in my thoughts and words and actions. What else? Nothing, but good can come out of my inviting you to examine my life. I will never regret that you examined my life. I will never regret when you change me in ways that please you. I want what you want. I want to live the life you have called me to life. I want to be the person you have called me to be. These desires that you have placed in me will only occur as you examine my life and do your good work in me. So here I am, and I will say it again, “examine me”. Yes, I will. Yes, I will continue to do my good work in you. Thank you, Lord.

Lord, examine my life thoroughly. Test me. Do your work in me. Mold and shape me. Make me to be like you. I want to think, speak, and act like you. Lead me as I walk through life with you. Guard and guide me as I live out the eternal life you have given me. Amen

Key Question…  How are you making it your daily practice to ask the Lord to investigate your life?

Living It Out…  Allow the Lord to examine your life and make changes in you.

Seeing It Happen…  Have faith that the Lord will examine your life and make changes in you.

Get Ready To Share…  Share with another person or your small group how the Lord has examined your life and made changes in you.

Prayer To Bless Others…  May you allow the Lord to investigate your life and make the changes He wants to make in you.

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Promises – Day 30 – Psalm 139:23-24 – Search Me – Growing As Disciples

Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts.  See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting. Psalm 139:23-24 (NIV)

Search Me

I have not shut myself off to you. My life is not closed to you. What do you mean by that? You have my invitation to test me. Go ahead and examine me. See what is in me. See if there is any offensive way in me. Are you confident about what I will find in you? Do I think you will find no sin in me? That is a good question. No, I’m sure that I am a sinner. I have not arrived. I am not a completed work. I am not a finished product. There is plenty of work yet to be done in me. That is why I can confidently ask you to search and test me. I know that you will remove any offensive way that is in me. I know that you will continue to mold and shape my life. You will make me into the person you want me to become. Yes, you are the work of my hands. I am molding and shaping your life.

I do know that your work in me will not always be or feel comfortable. To be molded and shaped sounds so free and easy, maybe even like going to the spa. I know that picture is far from accurate. Sometimes, your work in me has felt more like major surgery. Removing an offensive way that is in me has been and could again be very painful. My invitation to you still stands. If your work in me involves some pain, I still wholeheartedly and enthusiastically welcome you to proceed. Why is that? I know you have my best in mind. What is my best for you? Your best for me is for me to be the person you have called me to be. Your best for me is for me to accomplish your purposes and fulfill your plans. Your best for me is for me to follow you to where you lead me to do what you ask of me. Your best for me is for me to bear fruit for your kingdom and bring glory to your name. Yes, all of these things are my best for you. None of these things will be possible without you doing your work in me. That is correct. So, I will say it again, search me, test me, and remove any offensive way that is in me. That is very good.

Lord, you have my invitation to search me completely. Test me. See what is in me. Change any offensive way that is in me. Help me to live a life that is good, right and pleasing to you. Lead me on your path. Guide me on your way everlasting. I will follow you. Amen

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Becoming Like Christ – Day 82 – Psalm 139:23-24 – Search Me, O God – Growing As Disciples

Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting. Psalm 139:23-24 (NIV)

Search Me

I’m not sure if this is the best or worst time to pray this prayer. Why is that? I am so frustrated. I am absolutely churning inside. There is no calm within. Do you mean to say that you are angry? Yes, I am angry. Do you have ample reason to be angry? Are you justified in being as angry as you are? Probably not. Do you think that I am pleased with your anger? Certainly not. Have you let a relatively minor situation get the best of you? Without, a doubt. Have you lost all your perspective and allowed yourself to overcome with emotion? There is no doubt about it. Guess what. What? This is a perfect time to draw near to me. This is an ideal time to ask me to search you to remove any offensive way that is within you. Why is that? What is at the surface? What has coming bubbling out of you? What is obvious for both of us to see? I can see that I am unnecessarily angry. I can see that I have foolishly let something upset me. I have let a minor detail in life cause me to lose all perspective. That is good. What is good about that? It is good that you see these things. It is great that you are confessing them to me. You are not trying to hide anything from me. No, I am not. That’s very good isn’t it? Yes, I can see that now.

What would you like me to do for you? I would like you to forgive me. You are forgiven. I would also like you to search me. That is never hard for you, but it is especially easy today. Yes, it is. Well, I would like you to remove this anger from me. What anger? Yes, I get it. You have already removed this anger from me. Is there something else that you would like me to do for you? Yes, I would like you to help me to overcome situations that might be frustrating. I would like you to give me victory over anger. What do I want you to do? You want me to be quick to listen, slow to speak and be slow to become angry. Yes, I do. That’s what I want as well. Good, I will hear and answer your prayer. I will lead you in my everlasting way. You will live the life that I am calling you to live. Thank you, Lord.

Lord, I welcome you to search me. I don’t confidently say that thinking you will find no offensive way that is within me. Just the opposite is true; I am sure you will find an offensive way in me that certainly needs to be removed. I welcome your work in me. Amen

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Prayer – Psalm 139:23-24 – Search Me – Growing As Disciples

Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting. Psalm 139:23-24 (NIV)

Work In Me

I’m not going to hold back. I’m not going to hide. I’m not going to be reluctant. I’m not going to be hesitant. I’m not going to be timid. I’m boldly going to lay a request before you. What’s that? I’m going to ask that you search me. I’m going to ask that you test me. You seem quite confident. You seem so very sure. Not in me, that’s for sure. What do you mean by that? I’m sure that you are going to find things in me that are not pleasing to you. You won’t have to look long and hard to see things that you will want to remove from my life. I know that I am a sinner. I know that I have sinned against you in my thoughts, words and deeds. So, you aren’t sure that I won’t find anything in you that is displeasing to me? Just the opposite. So, why are you so confident and bold in your prayer? I am sure about you.

What are you sure about me? I know that you love me. I know that you are my Heavenly Father. I know that I am your child. I know that you have begun a good work in me that you will bring to completion. I know that I am the work of your hands. I know that you are molding and shaping my life. I know that I am and will be a masterpiece because your work in, for and through me will not stop until the day that I come to see you face to face. Then I will be completely changed. Yes, that is all true.

What else do you know? I know that it would be foolish to not want you to do your full work in, for and through me. It would be really stupid to hold on to sinful thoughts, words or deeds that are not pleasing to you. It would be really dumb to think that I could hide anything in me that displeases you. That’s right. I know that it may be painful, at times, to have you remove from my life what is displeasing to you. Your work in, for or through me might feel like major surgery. I might have some fear. I might have some trepidation. I might be a little anxious. But, I know that it will all be worth it, to have you do your work in, for and through me. So, I will say it again. Search me. Test me. I want to be the whole and healthy person you have called me to be. I want to live the live that you are calling me to live. I want to live in every way that pleases you.  I want to do your will and walk in your ways. That is very good. I will hear and answer your prayer. I will do my work in, for and through you. Thank you, Lord.

Lord, it is an uncomfortable experience to ask you to search me. I strongly suspect you will show me things about myself that I would rather not see. Yet, I want to be changed. Remove offensive ways in me. Lead me to live in your ways that are pleasing to you. Amen

Any Offensive Way In Me

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - If - Psalm 139:23-24 -Any Offensive Way In Me - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – If – Psalm 139:23-24 – Any Offensive Way In Me – Growing As Disciples

Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting. Psalm 139:23-24 (NIV)

Search Me

I have nothing I want to hide. I welcome you to search my life. That does not mean that I think that I am perfect. I am far from that. I am a sinner that is for sure. I have thought, said and done what is not pleasing to you. I have sinned both in my actions and in my inaction. Why do you want me to examine your life? Why do you feel so confident in your request? My confidence is not in myself. My confidence is in you. I know that you love me. I know that you are on my side. I know that you have your best in mind for me. It is very good that you are confident in me. I want what you want. I want to fully live the life that you have called me to live. I don’t want to fall short of your hopes, and dreams and plans for me. I don’t want anything to hinder all that you want to do in and through my life. You are right in your thinking.

I know that I have been making a mistake. What kind of mistake have you been making? I have been living an unexamined life. I have not asked you to examine my life nearly enough. I have been showing you your sins. Yes, I know. But, I have not asked you to show me my sin. I have not welcomed your examination of my life. I have not sat to listen to what you might want to say to me about what I have thought, said and done. I have not made confession of my sins a regular part of the end of each of my days. I’m suspecting that you want me to see more of my sin. Why is that? As I see what you want me to see, I will know how you want to mold and shape my life. I will allow you to do what you want to do in and through me. Yes, You will.

So what is your plan? I will sit before you at the end of each day. I will ask you to examine my life. I will ask you to show me what you want me to see. I will listen to all that you want me to hear. I will allow you to work in my life. I will allow you to make me into the person that you have called me to be. That will be very good.

Lord, I have no desire to hide anything from you. I want my life to be like an open book before you. Examine my life closely. Remove anything and everything from my life that is not pleasing to you. I welcome your work in my life. Amen

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Knowing God – Psalm 139:23-24 – Search Me, O God – Growing As Disciples

Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting. Psalm 139:23-24 (NIV)

Examination

I have no problem asking you to know my heart, test my mind and examine my life. I welcome you to know my heart, test my mind and examine my life. Do you have nothing to worry about? Do you have nothing to hide? Do you have every reason to be confident? No, I have only one reason to be confident. What’s that? My confidence is in you. You loved me enough to send your Son into the world to die for my sins so that I could be forgiven and cleansed of all my unrighteousness.  He has made me to be acceptable in your sight. He has made it so that I can live in a close and intimate relationship with you. You are my Heavenly Father. Yes, I am. I am your child. Yes, you are. Your confidence is in the right place. You can be completely confident in my love for you.

I am confident in your love for me. So, I want you to know my heart, test my mind and examine my life. Why is that? I know that I will come up short. I know that I will be lacking. I know that I will have missed the mark. I know that I will need your help. Yes, you will. I know that you will want to change my heart, transform my mind and guide my life. Yes, I do. I welcome your working in my life. I want what you want. I want to know you and do your will. I want to live in ways that please you. I want to follow you to where you lead me. I want to do all that you ask of me. I want you to accomplish your purposes and plans in my life. I want to follow you on the path of life that you have laid out for me. That is very good.

I will lead you. I will change your heart. I will transform your mind. I will guide your life. You can be completely confident in me. Keep welcoming my work in and through your life. Keep following me on the path of life that I have laid out for you. Yes Lord, I will.

Lord, know my heart, test my mind and examine my life. See if there are any wicked ways in me. Change my heart, transform my mind and guide my life so that I can live in ways that please you as I follow you on the path of life.  Amen

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Wisdom – Psalm 139:23-24 – Search Me – Growing As Disciples

Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting. Psalm 139:23-24 (NIV)

Examine Me

You have my invitation. I welcome your examination. Go ahead and investigate my life. Put my life under your microscope. Take a long and close look at me. Know my heart. Test me. Know every one of my thoughts. Tell me what you find. You seem quite confident. I am very confident. I have nothing to fear. Why is that? Why are you so confident? Why do you have nothing to fear? I can tell you one thing that is for sure. What’s that? My confidence is not in myself, not for one minute, not for one second. If my confidence were in myself, it would be a scary thought for you to be examining my life. But, my confidence is in you and you alone. That’s very good. I know without a doubt that you love me. I know that I am your child. You are my Heavenly Father. I am sure that you will find things in my life that do not please you. I am sure that you will find thoughts, and words and deeds in and from me that you will want to change. I trust you. I want you to work in my life. I want you to change me. I know that you will do your good work in me. I know that you will mold and shape my life. I know that you will help me to do what is pleasing to you. You will change my heart. You will transform my mind. You will help me to know and do your will. You will help me to walk in your ways. You will lead me. You will guide me. You will direct me. You will help me to fulfill your purposes and plans. Yes, I will.

So, inviting you do take a close look at my life is an exciting thought. Really? Well, I can’t say that I don’t have some apprehension over your examination. Why is that? I know that the changes you will want to make in my life will not always be free and easy and comfortable. Sometimes your changes in my life have been painful. Sometimes your changes in my life have been like surgery. You will remove from my life what is not been pleasing to you. That can hurt. Yes, it can. But your examination and your surgery in my life will bring healing to me. You will make me able to live a life that is pleasing to you. Yes, I will.

Lord, investigate my life and show me if I am living in any way that is offensive to you. It is my desire to live in ways that please you in all that I think, say, and do. Help me to live fully for you and to bring glory to your name. Amen
