Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Be - Psalm 16:7-8 - Shaken- Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Be – Psalm 16:7-8 – Shaken- Growing As Disciples

I will praise the LORD, who counsels me; even at night my heart instructs me. I have set the LORD always before me. Because he is at my right hand, I will not be shaken. Psalm 16:7-8 (NIV)

With You

You are not on your own. I am with you to help you. I will counsel you. I will instruct you. I will teach you. I will watch over you. I will guide you through life. Do not be afraid. Don’t let yourself be shaken. You will not stumble. You will not fall. I will hold you up. I will keep you going. I will restore you. I will refresh you. I will strengthen you. You can rely on me. Do you believe what I am saying to you? Will you place all your trust in me? Will you rely on me rather than in anything or on anyone else?  Lord, I do believe what you are saying to me. I will place my complete trust in you. I will not rely in anything or on anyone other than you. You are my fortress. You are my deliverer. You are my refuge and strength. I will hold on to you as I know that you are holding on to me. That will be very good.

I have all provided for you. I have already given all that you will need, so you will not be shaken. What have you given to me? I am not asking out of ignorance. I’m not asking out of unbelief. I’m asking this question out of faith. I want to hear again how you have provided for me, so that I will not be shaken. That’s very good. I am delighted to answer your question. I have given you myself. You can live in an intimate relationship with me. You can hear my voice. You can receive my counsel. I have given you my Spirit. You can receive my refreshment. You can receive my guidance. I will lead you to where I want you to go and give you what I want you to do. I will make you able to know and do my will. You will accomplish my purposes and fulfill my plans for your life. I have set boundaries for your life that will keep and guard you. You will not go where you should not go. You will not do what you should not do. I have given you my body. I have placed you among my followers. You can give and receive encouragement from each other as you love, follow and serve me. I have given you the ability to worship me. My praise will be on your lips as you walk with me through life. Thank you Lord for all that you have given to me. Thank you Lord for always being with me to keep me from never being shaken.

Lord, you are my only source of security in this uncertain and unpredictable life. I will take refuge in you. I will rely on you. I know that you are always with me. I know I never need be shaken. Thank you for being with me to counsel and guide me through life. Amen

Remains In Me

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Character - John 15:5 - Remains In Me - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Character – John 15:5 – Remains In Me – Growing As Disciples

“I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. John 15:5 (NIV)

Well Done

My life has not been particularly fruitful. That sounds like a dramatic understatement to me. The truth is, my life has been like a barren wasteland. I have worked extremely hard and accomplished very little. Oh sure, I can point to achievements that the world might recognize and applaud. But, at the end of the day, at the end of my life, what will stand the test of time and last for all eternity? That is a very good question. Many go through their entire life without asking any questions like that. You want your life to have mattered. You want your life to have made a mark. You want to be able to look back over your life and see that it was well spent. Most of all, you want to hear me say, “Well done, good and faithful servant!” Have I heard you correctly? Is all that I have said about you true? Yes, I want my life to count. I want to make a mark. I want my life to have been well spent.

How will you know if your life counted, made its mark and was well spent? That may sound like a difficult and unanswerable question. It is an easy question for me to answer. Really, let me hear your answer. I will know if my life counted, made its mark and was well spent if I went and did your will. How will you know my will? How will you be able to go and do my will? Again, that is not a difficult question to answer. I will know your will if I have listened to you. To listen to you I must live in an intimate relationship with you. I must spend time in your presence. I quiet myself before you. I must wait for your instructions. I must receive your guidance. I also know that you will ask me to do what I cannot possibly do without your help. Why is that? You want me to live a life of relying on you. You want me to follow you to where you lead me. You want me to do what you ask of me. You want me to rely on your power and strength to help me to do what only you can do in and through me. As I go where you guide me and do what you ask of me, I know that I will be accomplishing your purposes and fulfilling your plans. That’s right. If I keep on loving, following and serving you, I will one day hear you say, “Well done, good and faithful servant!” Yes, you will.

Lord, I know that apart for you I can do nothing. My life has been an example of working hard and accomplishing nothing of eternal value. I want to be fruitful for you. Help me to remain in you so I will bear fruit for your kingdom and bring glory to your name. Amen

Spoke The Word

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - God's Word - Hebrews 13:7 - Spoke The Word - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotionals Study Guide – God’s Word – Hebrews 13:7 – Spoke The Word – Growing As Disciples

Remember your leaders, who spoke the word of God to you. Consider the outcome of their way of life and imitate their faith. Hebrews 13:7 (NIV)

Hear And Speak

I am taking time right now to remember my leaders. That’s good. I have a lot to consider. I have much to remember. I have abundant reasons to give thanks and praise to you for the many faithful leaders you have brought into my life. Yes, you do. They have taken time to hear your word.  They have allowed your word to dwell in them richly. They have meditated on your word day and night. They have memorized your word. They have prayed your word. They have claimed your word. They have known the truth of your word. In every way, they have taken hold of your word as they allowed it to take hold of them. They have had hearts that were changed by your word. They have had minds that were transformed by your word. They have had lives that have been guided by your word. Your word has filled them with passion. Your word has sent them on a mission. Guidance from your word brought them to me. You gave them your word and they spoke it into my life. For that I am eternally grateful. That’s good. I would not be the person that I am today had your faithful followers not taken up your call to both hear and speak your word. That’s true. They heard your word and they spoke it to me. Yes, they did.

You are remembering. You are reflecting. You are taking a long look back at the people that I have used in your life. Yes, I am. You don’t do this very often. Should I do this more often? What do you think? Yes, I need to remember and reflect more on your activity in my life. There are a lot of lessons from the past that will guide my future. That’s right. What lessons are you learning right now? That is a very good question. I want to imitate the lives of your faithful followers that have gone before me. What do you mean by that? I want to do what they did. I want to imitate their lives. I want to hear your word just like they heard your word. I want your word to change my heart, transform my mind, and guide my life. I want to take hold of your word as I allow it to take hold of me. That’s very good. What else? I want to faithfully and boldly speak your word into the lives of others. Your word is not meant to bless just me. Your word that is blessing me is meant to be a blessing to others. That’s right. Someday, I would like it if others were to imitate my life. I would like to be an example for them of someone who faithfully heard and boldly spoke your word. That will be very good. Someday, others will want to imitate the life that you have lived as one of my followers. Keep hearing and speaking my word. Yes Lord, I will.

Lord, I have had many faithful leaders who have made every effort to hear and speak your word to others. I am joyfully remembering them. I would like to imitate their faithful lives. I want to clearly hear your word so I can faithfully and boldly speak it to others. Amen

Shrinks Back

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - If - Hebrews 10:38-39 - Shrinks Back- Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – If – Hebrews 10:38-39 – Shrinks Back- Growing As Disciples

But my righteous one will live by faith. And if he shrinks back, I will not be pleased with him.” But we are not of those who shrink back and are destroyed, but of those who believe and are saved. Hebrews 10:38-39 (NIV)

Faith Over Fear

Can you hear my voice? Are you making yourself attentive to me? Are you listening to all that I want to say to you? I can hear your voice. I have set a time and a place to meet with you. Yes, I am making myself attentive to you. Am I listening to all that you have to say to me? That’s a good question. I want to say yes. I doubt that I am hearing all that you want to say to me. I am straining to hear you. I am listening carefully to you. It is my delight and joy hearing you speak to me. I don’t want to miss out on one word that you have to say to me. I have something that I want to say to you right now. I’m listening. You have my full attention. That’s good.

There is something that I want you to know. There is something that I want you to be able to recognize. There is something that I don’t want you to be surprised by. There is something that I want you to come to expect. Now, I’m really curious. What is this something that you are talking about? You will be faced with a choice throughout your life. This choice will appear again and again and over and over as you follow me. This choice will never be a one and done kind of choice. Tell me more. You first made this choice when you came to believe in me. You turned away from your sin and told me that you were going to follow me as your Savior and Lord. Yes, I did. I am your Savior and Lord. On the day you turned your life over to me your life of salvation began. My being your Savior and Lord is a settled question. You being my follower is a settled question. Your future in heaven forever with me is a settled question. Is this all clear to you? Yes, I have no doubt that you are my Savior and Lord and that I am your follower. One day I will come to live forever in heaven with you. Good, lets go back to the choice that will keep repeating itself in your life. Let’s talk about the choice that you will be required to answer again and again and over and over. I want to know more about this choice. You will have the choice of faith over fear. I’m not exactly sure what you mean. Oh, I think you know exactly what I mean. When have you been afraid? When have I asked you to choose faith in me over your fears? When have I asked you to go and do something for me that caused you to face one of your fears? I get it. Will you have faith in me? Will you keep following me? Will you move forward with me? Will you do what I ask of you? Will you allow me to overcome your fears and grow your faith in me? Will you choose faith over fear? Yes Lord, I will choose faith in you over my fears. That will be very good.

Lord, I have been faced with the choice of faith over fear many times. Forgive me for not always making the right choice. Thank you for allowing me to hear your voice leading me through life. I will follow you as my Savior and Lord. I will move forward with you. Amen

Hearts Burning

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide- God's Word - Luke 24:30-32 - Hearts Burning- Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – God’s Word – Luke 24:30-32 – Hearts Burning- Growing As Disciples

When he was at the table with them, he took bread, gave thanks, broke it and began to give it to them. Then their eyes were opened and they recognized him, and he disappeared from their sight. They asked each other, “Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?” Luke 24:30-32 (NIV)

On Fire

I want what they had. What’s that? You opened the Scriptures to these two people. You helped them to see what they could not see. You helped them to understand what they did not understand. You helped them to think in ways that they were not thinking. You put all that they had been experiencing in a larger context. You helped to make sense out of the life they were living. You changed their hearts, transformed their minds and guided their lives. You gave them a new passion and purpose and a plan for their lives. They were set on fire to love, follow and serve you. I want all these things. I want you to open the Scriptures to me. I want you to help me to see want I cannot see. I want you to help me to understand what I do not understand. I want you to change my thinking. I want you to change my heart, transform my mind and guide my life. I want a passion and purpose and plan for my life that comes from you. I want to be set on fire to love, follow and serve you with all my heart and mind and soul and strength. Are these the prayers of your heart? Yes, these are my prayers. This is what I am asking of you. I will hear and answer these prayers of yours.

I want more. What more do you want? You shared your life intimately with these two people. They got a chance to know you. They heard you describe your will and your ways. They were sent on a mission to go where you guided them to do all that you asked of them. This encounter on the road was just the start of their walking with you. This was just the beginning of their life of faith with you. What are you trying to say to me? I want to know you. I want to live and walk in an intimate relationship with you. I want to know your will and walk in your ways. I want you to send me on a mission. I want to accomplish your purposes and fulfill your plans. I want to do what is pleasing to you. Are these also prayers from your heart? Yes, these are my prayers. This is what I am also asking of you. I will hear and answer these prayers.

Is there anything else you want from me? I want what you want.  I want you to give me what you want to give me. I want to receive all that you have for me, that I could not ask for or even imagine. I don’t want to leave anything undone. I don’t want let anything go unfulfilled. I want to live the life that you have always had in mind for me. These are also very good requests. I will hear and answer these prayers of yours as well. Lord, thank you for your blessing on my life.

Lord, many times I have been unaware of your activity in the world around me. As I sit down and make time to meet with you, I ask you to open my eyes to see all you want to show me. Use your word to change my heart, transform my mind and guide my life. Amen

Life To Those Who Find Them

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - God's Word- Proverbs 4:20-22 - Life To Those Who Find Them - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – God’s Word- Proverbs 4:20-22 – Life To Those Who Find Them – Growing As Disciples

My son, pay attention to what I say; listen closely to my words. Do not let them out of your sight, keep them within your heart; for they are life to those who find them and health to a man’s whole body. Proverbs 4:20-22 (NIV)

My Words

How about I start out talking. That would be fine with me. What would you like to say to me? I have set apart a time and place to meet with you. A day does not go by that I haven’t made it a priority to hear from you. I’ve noticed that about you. You are consistent. You are determined. You are relentless. I am paying full attention to your words. I am listening very carefully to everything you want to say to me. I am remaining still before you. I am being quiet in your presence. I am focused. I am eager. I am expectant. I am straining to hear every one of your words. There is no place I would rather be than in your presence. There is nothing I would rather do than hear from you. Those are very good desires that you have in your heart. I know that these desires in my heart come from you. You are fanning the flame of my desire for you. Yes, I am.

What has my word done for you? Your word has guarded and guided my life. Your word has steered me away from danger. Your word has guided the course of my life. Your word has helped me to know and do your will. Your word has helped me to think your thoughts, speak your words and do your deeds. Your word has helped me to stand against temptation and evil that is in the world. Your word has helped me to do what is pleasing in your sight. You word has filled me with joy. Your word has made me glad. Your word has given me hope. Every good thing that I have received now and will receive forever has come to me through your word. Your word has healed what was once a bruised and battered and broken life. Now, your word has brought health to my body and healing to my entire being. I am so thankful for your word. That is very good.

What will you never stop doing with my word? I will never stop listening to your word. I will never stop putting your word into practice. There will never be a day that I don’t need to hear from you. There will never be a day that I will stop needing to know your will. There will never be a day when I don’t need to put your word in practice. I will always hear your words. I will also do your will. Speak to me Lord. I am listening. Yes, I know that you are.

Father, I will pay attention to your word by listening closely to whatever you say to me. Your word will not leave my sight. I will keep your word in my heart. Thank you for helping me to hear your word. Your word has brought life and health to my whole body. Amen

Without Faith

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Faith - Hebrews 11:6 - Without Faith - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Faith – Hebrews 11:6 – Without Faith – Growing As Disciples

And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.   Hebrews 11:6 (NIV)

Earnestly

Do you want to please me? Yes, I want to please you. How can I please you? You cannot please me with your best self-effort. You cannot please me by your own accomplishments. You cannot please me with self-sacrifices. There is only one way that you please me. How is that? You only please me by coming to me.  You can only please me by living in an intimate relationship with me. I am your God and Father. You are my child. I made you to live in fellowship with me. I have no doubt about that. It is the desire of my heart to know you. I want to love you with all my heart and mind and soul and strength. These desires, this hope and dream does not come from me. You placed these desires and hopes and dreams in my heart. Yes, I did.

What will you do because you believe in me? What will you do because you want to come to me? What will you do because you want to live in an intimate relationship with me? I will seek you with all my heart. What will that look like? I will set aside a time and a place to meet with you. I will live my life in a constant dialogue with you. I will listen attentively to you. I will speak earnestly with you. I will set my hope and heart and mind and life on you. I will make meeting with you in your word a daily priority in my life. I will allow you to use your word to mold and shape my life. I will allow your word to help me to know and strengthen me to do your will. That will be very good.

What reward will there be in earnestly seeking me with all your heart? Knowing and loving you with all my heart will be my reward. Living and walking in your presence will be my reward. Following and obeying you will be my reward. Knowing that I am doing what is pleasing to you will be my reward. Bearing fruit for your kingdom and bringing glory to your name will be my reward. One day when I come to live forever in heaven with you and hear you say, “Well done, good and faithful servant”, will be my reward. Yes, it will. I’m looking forward to that day. That is very good.

Lord, I do believe in you with all my heart and mind and soul and strength. I will come to you. I will make earnestly seeking you the pursuit of my life. I know without a doubt that as I seek you I will find you. Grow my faith in you as I love, follow and serve you. Amen

Not Sleep

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Let Us - 1 Thessalonians 5:6 - Not Sleep - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Let Us – 1 Thessalonians 5:6 – Not Sleep – Growing As Disciples

So then let us not sleep, as others do, but let us keep awake and be sober. 1 Thessalonians 5:6 (ESV)

Awake

Be completely awake to me. Listen attentively to my word. Make yourself fully available to me. You are describing the kind of life that I want to live with you. I want to walk with you. I want to hear your voice. I want to recognize and see all that you are doing in the world around me. I want every step of my life to be guided by you. I don’t want to hold anything back from you. I want to go where you guide me. I want to do what you ask of me. Yes, I will make myself fully available to you. Yes, I will listen attentively to your word. Yes, I will be completely awake to you. I’m here right now to listen to all that you have to say to me. I will keep coming to you each and every day. I will draw near to you. I know that you will draw near to me. Yes, I will.

Can I tell you something? Yes, go right ahead, I’m listening. I’m impatient. Do you think that comes as a surprise to me? No, I’m just stating the obvious. Tell me about your impatience. I know that you have given me an overpowering desire to know and love you. I know that you have given me an insatiable hunger for you. I know that you have set me on fire so that I want to shine brightly as a light in the world for you. You don’t have to worry about me spiritually sleep walking through life. No, I’m sure that I wont have to worry about that. You have fully welcomed me into your heart and mind and life. Yes, I have. But, I am impatient. What are you impatient about? You know. Yes, I do know. I want all that you want me to have. I want to be all that you want me to be. I want to do all that you want me to do. You want all of what I have for you right now at this very moment, is that right? You want to be all that I want you to be right now? You want to do all that I have given you to do right now? I would have thought so until I just heard you ask me those questions. Have you changed your mind? Yes, I have changed my mind. Why is that? I know that I need to trust your timing. I know that I should not run ahead of you or lag behind you. You want me to keep in step with all that you want to do in me, with me and for me. Yes, I do. Will you trust me? Will you rely on me? Will you attentively watch and what for all that I will do in and through you for my kingdom and my glory? Yes Lord, I will keep in step with you. Yes, I rely on you and your timing. That will be very good.

Lord, I want to be awake and alert to all you are doing in the world around me. I will be on guard against anything that might cause me to spiritually sleep walk through life. Help me to passionately love, follow and serve you as I eagerly wait for your return. Amen

Eyes On Jesus

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Faith - Hebrews 12:1-3 - Eyes On Jesus - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Faith – Hebrews 12:1-3 – Eyes On Jesus – Growing As Disciples

Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured such opposition from sinful men, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart. Hebrews 12:1-3 (NIV)

Run Well

I know that I am surrounded by a great cloud of witnesses. There are many who have gone before me. There is a multitude of those who have run well. They have kept the faith. They have endured. They have run right up to the end of their lives and have successfully crossed the finish line. They have persevered through hardships and trials of every kind. How did they do it? How were they able to keep on running well? What kept them going? What spurred them on? Is that a rhetorical question or are you expecting me to answer your question? I am thinking out loud. I am wondering. Yes, I would you to answer my question. Your answer is right before you in my word.

What must you do if you want to run well? What must you do if you want to successfully cross the finish line of your race of faith? First, I need to throw off anything that would hinder me from running well. What will hinder you from running well? Sin of every kind would hinder me from running well. Being conformed to the patterns of this world would hinder me from running well. Give me some examples. Fear and doubt would hinder me from running well. Lust and addictions would hinder me from running well. Being self-centered, self-indulgent, and self-sufficient would hinder me from running well. Yes, all these would hinder you from running well. What must you do next if you want to run well? I must run with perseverance. I must not give up. I must not quit. I must keep moving forward with you. The race of faith is not a short race. It is not a sprint. It is more like a marathon. Yes, it is. How will you ever have enough endurance and perseverance to keep running the race of faith? My own endurance and strength would never be enough. The only way that I will be able to keep on running is by keeping my eyes on you. I will keep on following you to where you lead me. I will keep on doing what you ask of me. I will remember that you had joy in running your race of faith. It was your pleasure to do what your Heavenly Father asked of you. I will remember that you endured opposition from sinful men. You did not grow weary. You did not lose heart. You did not give up. You did not quit. Neither will I. That will be very good.

Lord, thank you for being the author and perfecter of my faith. I will keep my eyes on you so I will live the life of faith. Give me endurance and help me to throw off any hindrance to running the race you have laid out for me. Amen

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Character – Philippians 2 – Shine Like Stars – Growing As Disciples

Do everything without complaining or arguing, so that you may become blameless and pure, children of God without fault in a crooked and depraved generation, in which you shine like stars in the universe as you hold out the word of life–in order that I may boast on the day of Christ that I did not run or labor for nothing. Philippians 2:14-16 (NIV)

Work To Do

I have given you work to do for me in this world. I have a purpose and plan for your life. I have called you to go and do my will. I want you to be my bright and bold witness in the world. I want you to shine like a star in the universe.  This comes as welcome news to me. I want to know and do your will. I want to be able to accomplish your purposes and fulfill your plans. I want to be a bold and bright witness for you in the world. I want to shine like a star in the universe so that others will be drawn to you through my life. That is very good.

What might hinder me from being a bold and bright witness for you in the world? That is a very good question. I am glad that you asked it. However, I do think that you know the answer to this question. I will listen to what you can say to me in answer to your own question. I must confess that I have been a complainer and an arguer. I have complained about the difficulty of life and the work you have given me to do for you. I have argued with you about your purposes and plans for my life. I have said that the work was too difficult and that I am unable, unqualified and unprepared to do what you have asked me to do for you. That’s not good. I know. Why is it not good that you have been a complainer and arguer? Complaining and arguing are the ways of the world. Complaining and arguing is standard practice in the world. If I let myself be a complainer and an arguer then there will be no way that I will be able to shine as a bold and bright witness for you in the world. No, you will not. What else? If I continue to complain and argue I will never accomplish the purposes and plans you have for my life. Why is that? What you ask of me will require faith. For me to be able to do what you ask of me I will need to come to rely on you. If I come to you to complain and argue, my faith will not grow. If I continue to complain and argue, I will never rely on you to go and do what you ask of me. That’s true. So, I will stop complaining and arguing. I will place all my faith in you. I will come to rely on you. I will allow you to use me to accomplish your purposes and fulfill your plans so that my labor will never be in vain. That will be very good.

Lord, I want to be a bold, bright, pure, and vibrant witness for you in the world. Help me to do what you have given me to do without complaining or arguing. Help me also, to be holding out your word of life to others in the world so they can come to know you. Amen
