Spoke The Word

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - God's Word - Acts 4:31 - Spoke The Word - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – God’s Word – Acts 4:31 – Spoke The Word – Growing As Disciples

After they prayed, the place where they were meeting was shaken. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word of God boldly. Acts 4:31 (NIV)

Speak Boldly

That is what I would like to be able to do. What’s that? I would like to be able to speak your word boldly. Why is that? I want to be used by you. I want to bear fruit for your kingdom. I want to bring glory to your name. I would like to see a multitude of people come to know and love and follow and serve you through the work you give to me. I am very tired of operating under my own strength. I know that I will not be able to go where you guide me and do what you ask me by functioning under my own power. No, you will not.

How do you think I will make you able to do the work I give you to do? You will empower me by your Holy Spirit living and moving and working in and through me. You know that? Yes, I know that. If you know that, then why do you not ask for that? I’m not sure what you mean. How often have you asked for my Holy Spirit to fill you? How frequently have you asked my Holy Spirit to move and work in and through you? Not nearly enough. Not frequently enough, of that I am certain.

What is more important your hard work or your hard prayers? I am sure that my prayers to you are far more important than the work that I might attempt to do for you. Don’t think that one is not needed. Both are required. But, what have you done? I have launched off on my own and used my best efforts to accomplish your purposes and fulfill your plans. Is that all? Is there something else that might be out of alignment with my will and my ways? I suppose so. Tell me about it. I have frequently engaged in many solo efforts. I have not joined together with my fellow believers. Both not relying on my Holy Spirit and not working together with your fellow believers is not good. No, it is not.

What will you do differently? I will ask your Holy Spirit to fill and empower me to do your work. I will gather in prayer with my fellow believers to engage in the work that you have given us to do for you. That will be very good. Then you will be able to speak boldly for me. Then you will bear an abundance of fruit for my kingdom. Then a multitude of people will come to know and love and follow and serve me. That is what I want. That is the desire of my heart. That is very good.

Holy Spirit, here I am. I am waiting for you to fill me. I am waiting for you to empower me. I am asking you to powerfully use me. Help me to boldly speak the word of God so that a multitude of people will be able to come to know and love and serve God. Amen

Like A Fire

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - God's Word - Jeremiah 23:29 - Like A Fire - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – God’s Word – Jeremiah 23:29 – Like A Fire – Growing As Disciples

“Is not my word like fire,” declares the LORD, “and like a hammer that breaks a rock in pieces? Jeremiah 23:29 (NIV)

Like A Fire And Hammer

How is your word like a fire? How is your word like a hammer? Those are two very good questions that I will let you answer. How has my word been like a fire and a hammer in your life? Your word has set me on fire to want to love and follow and serve you. Your word has created an insatiable hunger and thirst in me for you. My heart and mind and life burn with passion for you. I want to live a life that is fully pleasing to you. I want to go where you send me to do what you ask of me. Most of all, I want to know and love you with all my heart and mind and soul and strength. This is the fire that you have set in my heart and mind and life. That is very good. That’s not all, there is more. Your word has been like a white-hot fire to purify the thoughts of my mind, words of my mouth and deeds of my life. You have used your word to change my heart, transform my mind and guide my life. My life is not as it once was. I think thoughts, speak words and do deeds that are pleasing to you. Am I perfect? Has your word completely perfected me? No, your word continually burns like a flame in me and changes me day by day as I continue to love and follow and serve you. Only when I see you face to face will your work in me be complete. I eagerly look forward to that day. That is very good.

How has my word been like a hammer in your life? Your word has confronted my thoughts and words and deeds. Your word has challenged my heart and mind. You have used your word like a hammer to break up my thoughts and words and deeds that are not in alignment with your will and ways. You have used your word like a hammer to break up the hardness of my heart. You have used your word like a hammer to break through the thick headedness of my mind. I have needed your word to work like a fire and a hammer, so your work would continue in my heart and mind and life. That’s true.

Will you welcome my word into your heart and mind and life? Will you allow my word to be like a fire that purifies your life and sets you on fire to love, follow and serve me? Will you allow my word to be like a hammer that will break through your life? Yes Lord, I will. That is very good.

Lord, use your word like a white-hot fire to purify the thoughts of my mind, words of my mouth and deeds of my life. Use your word like a hammer to break up the hardness of my heart so that I will humbly accept all the work you want to do in and through me. Amen

Key Question… When has God’s word burned white-hot like a fire to purify your thoughts, words, and deeds?

Living It Out… Allow God’s word to burn like a fire to purify the thoughts of your mind, words of your mouth and deeds of your life.

Trained By Constant Practice

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - God's Word - Hebrews 5:11-14 - Trained By Constant Practice - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – God’s Word – Hebrews 5:11-14 – Trained By Constant Practice – Growing As Disciples

About this we have much to say, and it is hard to explain, since you have become dull of hearing. For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the basic principles of the oracles of God. You need milk, not solid food, for everyone who lives on milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, since he is a child. But solid food is for the mature, for those who have their powers of discernment trained by constant practice to distinguish good from evil. Hebrews 5:11-14 (ESV)

Dull Of Hearing

I don’t want that. What’s that? I don’t want to become dull of hearing. That’s good. What might make you dull of hearing? If I were to neglect your word, I would become dull of hearing. There is zero chance that I will hear your word if I make no attempt to listen to you. That is why it has been and will be my daily pattern and practice to meet with you in your word. I will make myself available to you. I will quiet myself before you. I will listen attentively to your voice. That reminds me of something. What’s that? The world is a noisy place. It is very difficult to hear you over the noise and busyness of life. Yes, it is. I am also reminded of another thought. I’m listening. It is very easy to get caught up in the hurry and hustle of daily life. That’s true. It is because the world is a noisy and busy place that I will set a part a special time and place to meet with you in your word. That will be very good.

What else might cause you to become dull of hearing? If I were to let your word go in one ear and out the other the I will certainly become dull of hearing. I will become dull of hearing if I don’t constantly put your word into practice. That’s true. I’m sure I can know how well I have heard your word by how well I have put it into practice. That’s true. If I were to never put your word into practice, I could be sure that I never really heard your word in the first place. That is also true.

What will help you to grow in your ability to hear my word? If I were to teach others what you have been teaching me, that will help me to grow in my ability to hear your word. Yes, it will. Will you make it your daily habit to meet with me in my word? Will you put my word into your constant practice? Will you teach others what I have been teaching you? Yes Lord, I will. Then you will never become dull of hearing.

Lord, I do not want to be dull of hearing. I want to be able to hear and put your word into constant practice. I will meet with you every day in your word so that I can hear from you. Help me also to teach others all you have been teaching me from your word. Amen

Key Question… How is hearing God’s word helping you to live in the fullness of life that Jesus Christ has secured for you?

Living It Out… Read and hear God’s word so you will come to believe in Christ and have life in His name both now and forever.

Seeing It Happen Have faith that reading and hearing God’s word will cause you to believe in Christ and live the life He has for you.

Life In His Name

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - God's Word - John 20:30-31 - Life In His Name - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – God’s Word – John 20:30-31 – Life In His Name – Growing As Disciples

Jesus did many other miraculous signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book. But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name. John 20:30-31 (NIV)

Name

Your name is good and right and true. There is love and joy and peace and hope in your name. There is meaning and purpose and power in your name. Your name is above all names. At your name everything in heaven and on earth will bow down. Your name is holy. In your name there is forgiveness of sin. In your name there is deliverance from evil. In your name there is healing. There is fullness of life in your name both now and forever. Your name is certainly worthy of all my praise and worship. Yes, it is.

Your name has stopped me in my tracks. Your name turned my life around. Your name caused me to come to you. Your name led me to bow down and confess all my sins to you. Your name has forgiven all my sins and cleansed all my unrighteousness. Your name has given me a completely new life in you. Yes, it has.

How is that you have come to believe in me? How is that you have come to turn your life over to me? How have you welcomed me into your life as your Savior and Lord? How is that you are continuing to live the life that I have secured for you? I have heard your word. I have listened to your word. I have held on to your word. I have let your word dwell in me richly. I have taken your word into my heart and mind and life. I have allowed your word to change the entire course of my life. Your word has changed my heart. Your word is transforming my mind. Your word is guiding my life. I am living in the fullness of life that you have secured for me because I am loving and following and obeying you. Yes, you are.

What will you continue to do with my word? I will continue to hear and listen attentively to your word. I keep your word ever before me. I will not let your word out of my sight. Your word will be in my heart and on my mind. Not a day will go by that I will fail to hear and follow and obey your word. I can say this only because I know that you will help me to hold on to your word. You will strengthen me by your word. You will guard and guide me by your word. Your word will give me the fullness of life you have for me both now and forever. Yes, I will.

Lord, thank you for your word. Your word has spoken powerfully to me. Reading and hearing your word has caused me to believe in you. Believing in you has changed the entire course of my life. Believing in you has given me a new life in you now and forever. Amen

Will Set You Free

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - God's Word - John 8:31-32 - Will Set You Free - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – God’s Word – John 8:31-32 – Will Set You Free – Growing As Disciples

So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” John 8:31-32 (ESV)

Free

On the one hand, I know that you set me free on the day I came to believe in you. You broke the power of sin over my life. You eliminated the gulf between us. You set me free to love, follow and serve you. You gave me a completely new life to live. You adopted me into your family. You made me to be your child. You made it possible for me to live and walk in an intimate relationship with you. Yes, I did. For that I am and will be eternally grateful and thankful. That’s very good.

What is on the other hand? Before I get to that, I have more to say. Go ahead. You have changed everything about me. My thoughts and words and deeds have been radically changed. I do not resemble the person I once was. No, you do not. But I’m not completely changed. I make mistakes. I take missteps. I still do sin against you by doing what I should not do. I still sin against you by not doing what I should do.  You are telling me you are not perfect? You are telling me that you still need and want my forgiveness? You are telling me that you want to become more like me? You want to please me in all that you think, say and do, is that correct? Yes, you are correct.

Guess what? What? You will never be perfect in this life. Does that surprise you? It doesn’t surprise me. It does disappoint me. I don’t like falling short. I don’t like missing the mark.  Why is that? I don’t want to disappoint you. I don’t want to displease you.  It would disappoint and displease me if you thought you could become perfect. It would disappoint and displease me if you thought you didn’t need me. Well, I want and need you with all my heart and mind and soul and strength. Yes, you do and that is very good.

There is something that I want you to stop doing. What’s that? I want you to stop thinking that you can and should be perfect. I want you to place all your faith in me. I want you to believe that I am molding and shaping your life. I want you to trust that I am making you into the work of my hands. I know what I am doing. I will not fail. You are and will become my masterpiece. Do you believe me? Do you trust me? Yes, I do. Will you patiently allow my work in you to continue? Will you place your faith in me? Yes Lord, I will. That will be very good.

Lord, sometimes I am very impatient, and I would like to ask you to speed up the process of you using your word to completely set me free right now. I will continue to hold on to your word. I will think and speak and act as one of your disciples as you change me. Amen

Key Question… How has God been using His word to change your heart, transform your mind and guide your life?

Living It Out… As one of Christ’s disciples, hold on to His word, so He can set you free.

Seeing It Happen Have faith that you will be set free as you continue to hold on to God’s word.

Require Of You

Discipleship Study - God's Will - Micah 6:8 - Require Of You - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Study – God’s Will – Micah 6:8 – Require Of You – Growing As Disciples

He has showed you, O man, what is good. And what does the LORD require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God. Micah 6:8 (NIV)

Showed You

What have I showed you? Showed me when? What have I showed you since you started following me, right up until today? That’s a hard question to answer. Why is that? You have showed me so much. That’s a lot of ground and time to cover. Start at the beginning. The first two things that you showed me were your mercy and love. I had rejected you. I was living a prideful and independent life. I was on a path of darkness, walking away from you. I was pursuing comfort and pleasure. I did what I wanted when I wanted. I was living solely for myself. The further I walked away from you, the more that you pursued me. It was like you wouldn’t let me go. That’s right. You were ready for the day that was certain to come. What day was that? A day would come when I would have to pay the price of my self-centered and sinful life. What price was that? The pay back of my dark and sinful life was brokenness. I was bruised and battered and broken by the life I was living. I was in pain. I was hurt. I was rejected. I was humbled and at rock bottom when I cried out to you. I asked you to forgive me of my sins. I said I wanted you to come into my life. I told you that I would follow and serve you. Yes, you did. You showed me your mercy. You lavished me with your love. You didn’t give me what I deserved. Instead you forgave all my sins. You healed my life. You set me on a firm foundation. You helped me to begin to follow and serve you. Yes, I did.

What made you able to turn your life over to me? I was broken. My pride was gone. I had no hesitation to cry out to ask you for your help. That’s right. You were willing to humbly come to me to ask for my help. Yes, I was. You mentioned that I showed you my love and mercy when you cried out to me. Yes, I did. Will you show others love and mercy just as I have shown it to you? Yes, I will. How do you suppose that I now want to use you as you follow and serve me? You want me to right wrongs in the world. You want me to overturn injustice wherever and whenever I see it. You want me to express your love and mercy to others every step of the way as I follow and serve you. That’s right. Will you act justly, love mercy and walk humbly with me? Yes Lord, I will.

Lord, you have turned my life around. You showed me your mercy by forgiving me of all my sins. Now I want to humbly walk with you. Help me to be merciful to others just as you were to me. Use me to right wrongs and overturn injustice as I follow and serve you. Amen

Key Question… How is your life now completely different because you are walking humbly with God?

Living It Out… Obey God’s will by acting justly, loving mercy and walking humbly with Him.

Seeing It Happen Have faith that the Lord will help you to act justly, love mercy and walk humbly with Him.

Walk About In Freedom

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - God's Word - Psalm 119:44-48 - Walk About In Freedom - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – God’s Word – Psalm 119:44-48 – Walk About In Freedom – Growing As Disciples

I will always obey your law, for ever and ever. I will walk about in freedom, for I have sought out your precepts.  I will speak of your statutes before kings and will not be put to shame, for I delight in your commands because I love them.  I lift up my hands to your commands, which I love, and I meditate on your decrees. Psalm 119:44-48 (NIV)

Freedom

I want to live a different kind of life. What sort of life would that be? I want to live a life I couldn’t dream up. I want to live a life that I couldn’t imagine. I want to live a life that isn’t the product of my own thoughts. What do you want this different kind of life to be based on? I want my new and different and unimaginable life to be based on your word. I want your word to change everything about me. I want your word to make me able to think your thoughts. I want your word to make me able to speak your words. I want your word to make me able to do your will. In every way I want to live a life that is pleasing to you. That is very good. Yes, I think it is unimaginable. Why do you say that? I think you will lead to where I could not imagine. I think you will guide me to do the unthinkable. I don’t say this with dread or disdain. I don’t think this with reluctance and fear. No, I welcome your unimaginable and unthinkable. It is with joy that I ask you to use your word to change everything about me. I want to live and walk about in the freedom that only your word can provide and secure for me. I want to be able to do what only you can do in and through me by the power of your word. These are some bold and beautiful prayers that you are praying. You are asking for a lot from me. Yes, I am.

What will you do? Do you have a role in my hearing and answering these prayers of yours? Yes, I have a role. There is something I must do If I want these prayers to be heard and answered. What is that? I must follow and obey you. I must go where you lead me. I must do what you ask of me. What do you think I am asking of you right now? I think you are asking me to let your word dwell in me richly. You want me to take your word into my heart and mind and life. You want me to live my life according to your word. Will this be a hard and burdensome task for you? No, not at all, It is my joy to do what is pleasing to you. It is the desire of my life to live my life with and for you. I will follow and obey your word. I will meditate on your word day and night. I will allow your word to do its work in me. I will walk about in the freedom you give to me. Yes, you will. Then I will hear and answer all these prayers of yours.

Lord, I am so thankful for your word. I will follow and obey your word. I will joyfully seek out your word and meditate on it day and night. Use your word to change my thoughts, words and actions so I can walk about in freedom. Use my life to speak for you. Amen

Key Question… How has God’s word provided boundaries to help you walk about in freedom?

Strengthen Me

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - God's Word - Psalm 119:28-32 - Strengthen Me - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – God’s Word – Psalm 119:28-32 – Strengthen Me – Growing As Disciples

My soul is weary with sorrow; strengthen me according to your word. Keep me from deceitful ways; be gracious to me through your law. I have chosen the way of truth; I have set my heart on your laws. I hold fast to your statutes, O LORD; do not let me be put to shame. I run in the path of your commands, for you have set my heart free. Psalm 119:28-32 (NIV)

Set Your Heart

What is your heart set on? That is a very good question. Why do you think that is a good question? What I set my heart on will determine the entire course of my life? How so? If I were to set my heart on material possessions my life will become one long pursuit of more. I would never be content. I would always want the latest and greatest new thing. I would never be satisfied with what I had in life. No, you would not. If I were to set my heart on accomplishments and recognition my life would become one long effort to accomplish more to receive the applause of others. I would always need fresh acknowledge and praise. Yesterday’s accolades would always leave me empty and wanting and needing more. I would never be satisfied with what I had accomplished in life. No, you would not. If I were to set my heart on pleasure my life will become one long hedonistic adventure. This pursuit would leave me bruised and battered and broken. I would have no real lasting relationships with others. I would be using others just as they would be using me. This too would leave me empty and wanting and needing more. I would never be satisfied with yesterday’s pleasure. No, you would not.

You have not yet answered my good question. What is my heart set on? Yes, that’s it. My heart is set on you. I want to know you. I want to love you. I want to follow you. I want to serve you. I want to live my life with and for you. I want to know your will and walk in your ways. I want to live in an intimate relationship with you. In every way, I want to do what is pleasing to you. I want to hear your voice. I want to rest in your presence. I want to listen to everything that you want to say to me. I want to hold on to your word. I want to be set free as I put your word into practice.  I want to live and walk every day with you in the truth. I want to live a fresh and vital life that is fed and nourished by your word. I want to be guarded and guided by your word so I will never be ashamed. Set your heart on me and my word and you will have all these desires of your heart.

Lord, I have set my heart on your word. Your word has refreshed my soul. Your word has guarded and guided my life. Your word has set me free to live and walk in the truth. Your word has kept me from being ashamed. I thank and praise you for your word. Amen

Key Question… When have you allowed God’s word to replace unhelpful and unhealthy thoughts you were thinking?

Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth. As you sent me into the world, I have sent them into the world. For them I sanctify myself, that they too may be truly sanctified. John 17:17-19 (NIV)

Sending You

I have been molding and shaping your life. I have been using my word to change your heart. I have been using my word to transform your mind. Day by day I have been making you to be more like me. You are thinking my thoughts. You are walking in my ways. It is your consuming desire to follow and serve me. Yes, it is my desire to love and follow and serve you with all my heart and mind and soul and strength. I want to do nothing less than be fully devoted to you. I am all yours. Yes, you are all mine.

I have set you apart as one of my followers. I have trained you. I have taught you. I have prepared you. I am sending you out into the world. I am asking you to go and do what I have done. I want you to love like I loved. I want you to give like I gave. I want you to serve like I served. I will use you. You will follow me to where I lead you. You will do whatever I ask of you. Yes, I will follow and obey you as I wholeheartedly serve you. All that I am, all that I have, all that I hope to be is yours. I am completely at your disposal. Use me whenever, wherever and however you desire. Yes, I will.

My hand is upon you. I will use you as my instrument. I will make you able to do all that I ask of you. You will have power. You will have my strength. I will be with you to help you. I will make you able to stand. I will help you to endure every trial and withstand every test. The work that I began in you, I will bring into full completion. You will do the good works that I have prepared in advance for you to do for me. I will use you to bear fruit for my kingdom. You will bring glory to my name. You will be found faithful in my sight. One day you will hear me say, “Well done, good and faithful servant.” No words would be sweeter to my heart and mind and soul. Only you can make me faithful. Only you can make me able to accomplish the work that you have given me to do for you. All my faith and hope and trust is in you. I will rely on you completely as I follow and serve you. That will be very good.

Father, I ask you to transform my heart and mind and life by your word. Make me to look and be more like your son Jesus Christ. Thank you for setting me apart to be your follower. Prepare me for whatever mission you have in mind for me to do for you. Amen

Make Allowance

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - God's Word - Colossians 3:13-14 - Make Allowance - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – God’s Word – Colossians 3:13-14 – Make Allowance – Growing As Disciples

Make allowance for each other’s faults, and forgive anyone who offends you. Remember, the Lord forgave you, so you must forgive others. Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which binds us all together in perfect harmony. Colossians 3:13-14 (NLT)

Clothed With Love

I have been gifted in seeing the faults in others. I have been unable to recognize and see my own faults. I have been hurt and wounded by the offensive behavior of others. I have been unaware of how I have hurt and wounded others by my own offensive behavior. I have been unforgiving toward those who have hurt and wounded me. I have held on to bitterness and carried resentment. I have been nothing like you. How so? I have not loved others like you have loved me. I have not forgiven others like you have forgiven me. No, you have not.

What do you want from me? I want to be like you. I want to know you. I want to hear your voice leading me. I want to have your hand guiding me. I want to do your will.  I want to accomplish your purposes and fulfill your plans. I want to live the kind of life that you lived. I want to live as a bright and vibrant witness for you in the world. I want to go where you went. I want to do what you did. I want you to change my heart and transform mind. I want to think your thoughts. I want to do your will. I want you to remove any offensive behavior in me. I want you to clothe me with your love. I want to put on your love. I want to let go of bitterness. I want to stop carrying resentment. I want to love like you loved. I want to forgive others just like you have forgiven me. I want your love to be working in and through my life. Is that a prayer of yours? Is this what you are asking of me? This is the prayer of my heart. This is what I am asking of you. You want what I want. So, I will hear and answer this prayer of yours.

How will you know that I have heard and answered your prayer? You will use me to demonstrate your love. You will use me to bring health healing and hope to others. You will use me to bind up brokenness. You will use me to bring people together. You will use me to bring about unity where there has been division. You will use me to help others to live in harmony as your life and love are living in and through me. Yes, I will and that will be very good.

Lord, I know that I have my own weaknesses. I know that my behavior has been offensive to others. Help me to make allowances for other’s weaknesses. Help me to love and forgive others just as you have loved and forgiven me. Amen

Key Question… How are you loving and forgiving others just as Jesus Christ has loved and forgiven you?

Living It Out… Love and forgive others just as the Lord has loved and forgiven you.

Seeing It Happen Have faith that the Lord will help you to love and forgive others just He has loved and forgiven you.

Get Ready To Share… Share with another person or your small group how you are loving and forgiving others who have offended you.
