The Things Of God

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - The Mind - Matthew 16:21-23 - The Things Of God - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – The Mind – Matthew 16:21-23 – The Things Of God – Growing As Disciples

From that time on Jesus began to explain to his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things at the hands of the elders, chief priests and teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and on the third day be raised to life. Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. “Never, Lord!” he said. “This shall never happen to you!” Jesus turned and said to Peter, “Get behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to me; you do not have in mind the things of God, but the things of men.” Matthew 16:21-23 (NIV)

Never

Well, I have said that word plenty of times. What word? I have said “never” more times than I can even begin to count. How often have you been correct when you said that you would never do something? I can’t recall being right one time when I have said that I would never do something. Even if I were to identify one time that I haven’t done something that I said I would never do, there is still plenty of time to be incorrect again. That’s true.

How often have you said that you would never do something that I asked of you? How often have you thought that what I was trying to tell you could never be true? When were you so sure that what was being said to you could never be coming from me? You know the answers to those questions. Yes, I do. Do you? Yes, I do. I have frequently said never to you. I have often thought something you were trying to tell me couldn’t be true. I have been so sure. I have been so stubborn. I have been so determined. I have been so wrong. Well, you are learning. I guess I am. No, you are definitely learning. That is a very good thing. If you say so. That is kind of the point isn’t it? I do, say so. You are thinking and saying to yourself that you will never learn. I am telling you that you are learning. Will you believe me? Will you accept what I am saying to you? Or will you hold on to your own thoughts and ideas and beliefs. Let me put it this way to you. Do you want to know my thoughts? Do you want to know my will? Do you want to walk in my ways? Yes Lord, I want to know thoughts. Yes Lord, I want to know your will and walk in your ways. Then put aside your thoughts and your ways and listen to me. Think about my thoughts rather than those of this world. Yes Lord, I will. That will be very good.

Lord, often I have thought I knew your purposes and plans, but I was wrong. I had in mind the things of the world and of men. Rebuke and correct me so I will be able to know and understand the things of God. I want to know your will and walk in your ways. Amen

Shared Everything They Had

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - The Mind - Acts 4:32 - Shared Everything They Had - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – The Mind – Acts 4:32 – Shared Everything They Had – Growing As Disciples

All the believers were one in heart and mind. No one claimed that any of his possessions was his own, but they shared everything they had. Acts 4:32 (NIV)

Share

What do you have that you have not received from me? I don’t own anything that I haven’t received from you. Every good gift that I have has come from you. You have given me so much. You have richly blessed my life. I am thankful and grateful for all that you have given to me. That’s good.

What will you take with you from this life into your eternal life with me? There is not one worldly possession that I will take with me from this life. Would you then agree that you are not the real and true owner of what you currently possess?  That’s for certain. I am just a steward of everything you have given me in this life. So, there is no worldly possession from this life that is worth all your time and effort to seek to possess? There is no good reason for you to be on a mission to store up treasures for yourself in this life? No, there is not. I am like a visitor to this life. I am quickly passing through this life. I must not try to hang on to the worldly possessions of this life. No, you must not. If I let myself be on a mission to acquire the things of this world, I will surely not live the life that you are calling me to live. No, you would not. Such a life would entangle me in a constant and ongoing struggle and striving for more. I would not hear your voice over my own worldly efforts. I would not go where you wanted to guide me. I would not do what you asked of me. I would not accomplish your purposes. I would not fulfill your plans. No, you would not.

What do you think I want you to do with all I have given to you? I think you want me to share with others all the time and talent and resources, you have given to me. You want me to share all I have been given with others in need. You have richly blessed my life. You have richly blessed me so I can be a blessing to others. You want me to use what I have been given to bear fruit for your kingdom and bring glory to your name. Will you share your time and talent and resources with others who are in need? Will you generously give to others just as I have generously given to you? Yes Lord, I will. That will be very good.

Lord, once I thought that all I owned was mine to possess. I now see that all I thought I owned is really yours. I now know that it is your intent for me to love others by giving away my time, talent and resources to those in need. I will welcomely do that. Amen

Knowledge Of His Will

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - The Mind - Colossians 1:9-10 - Knowledge Of His Will - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – The Mind – Colossians 1:9-10 – Knowledge Of His Will – Growing As Disciples

For this reason, since the day we heard about you, we have not stopped praying for you and asking God to fill you with the knowledge of his will through all spiritual wisdom and understanding. And we pray this in order that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and may please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God,  Colossians 1:9-10 (NIV)

Know His Will

How will I ever be able to live a life that is worthy of you? That seems like an impossible goal. On your own it would be impossible for you to live a life that is worthy of me. Your even trying to live a life that is worthy of me on your own power and strength would be offensive to me. You will never impress me by your efforts. You cannot earn my favor. You do not deserve my merit. If you could live a life that is worthy of me by yourself it would have been a mistake for me to send my Son into the world to die for your sins. Do you think I made a mistake by allowing my Son to be a sacrifice for your sins? No, certainly not. You don’t make mistakes. No, I do not.

You have turned away from your sin. You have received my Son into your life as your Savior and Lord. I have given you a new heart. I have given you a new mind. It is now your desire to live your life with and for me. Yes, this is all true. It is now your calling to live a life that is worthy of me. That is my desire. That is my plan. That is my goal. You have a good desire, plan and goal.

Yet, you are not sure how you will ever be able to live a life that is worthy of me. That’s true. You are not able to live a life that is worthy of me. No, I am not. It is impossible for you to live a life that is worthy of me. Yes, it is. Do you know that I can do what is impossible? Yes, I do. Do you believe that I can make you able to live a life that is worthy of me? Yes, I do. How do you think I will change you? I think you will show yourself to me. I think you will let me know your will. I believe that you will show me your ways. You will give me spiritual wisdom and understanding. In your presence you will change my heart and transform my mind. You will make me able to think your thoughts and walk in your ways. You will make it my passionate desire to live a life that is worthy of you. Yes, I will. It will become my joy to do what is pleasing to you. That will be very good.

Father, it is my desire to know you and to live a life worthy of Christ, pleasing Him in every way. Fill me with the knowledge of your will by your spiritual wisdom and understanding so that I will bear fruit in every good work. Amen

Blinded The Minds Of Unbelievers

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - The Mind - 2 Corinthians 4:4-6- Blinded The Minds Of Unbelievers - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – The Mind – 2 Corinthians 4:4-6- Blinded The Minds Of Unbelievers – Growing As Disciples

The god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers, so that they cannot see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God. For we do not preach ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord, and ourselves as your servants for Jesus’ sake. For God, who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” made his light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ. 2 Corinthians 4:4-6 (NIV)

Bright Light

Do you want to shine as a light in the world for me? Do you want others to be drawn to me through my light shining in and through you? Yes, I want to shine as a light in the world for you. Yes, I want others to be drawn to you through your light shining in and through me. I know one thing for sure. What’s that? This cannot be about me. I am not a source of light. For me to shine, you must be shinning in and through me. That’s right.

What must you do if you want my light to shine in and through you? I must spend time in your presence. What will happen to you as you spend time in my presence? I will become more and more like you, as I draw near to you. I cannot spend time in your presence and remain unchanged. That’s true. In your presence you will change everything about me. How so? I will come to think your thoughts, speak your words and do your deeds. My heart will be changed. My mind will be transformed. You will guard and guide my life as I draw near to you. You will make me able to live the life you are calling me to live. You will make me able to live a life that is pleasing to you. You will accomplish your purposes and fulfill your plans in and through my life, as I continue to spend time in your presence. I will bear fruit for your kingdom. I will bring glory to your name. I will shine brightly like a star in the universe, as I live my life with and for you. Yes, you will.

Why do you want to spend time in my presence? Why do you want to become like me? Why do you want to shine brightly in this dark world for me? I love you because you first loved me. I love you with all my heart and mind and soul and strength. It is no burden or sacrifice to live my life with and for you. It is my passionate desire and desire of my heart to live a life that is pleasing to you. I will ask for only one thing. What’s that? I will ask for your help. Make me able to know and do your will. Make me to be a bright light that shines for you in this dark world. I will hear and answer your prayer beyond what you could ask for or even imagine. Thank you, Lord.

Lord, use my life as a light in this world to those who are walking in darkness. Show me who I can speak to on your behalf. Help me to tell them about your glory and goodness. Help me to explain to them your offer of salvation. Amen

Doubts Rise In Your Minds

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - The Mind - Luke 24-36-39 - Doubts Rise In Your Minds - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide- The Mind – Luke 24-36-39 – Doubts Rise In Your Minds – Growing As Disciples

While they were still talking about this, Jesus himself stood among them and said to them, “Peace be with you.” They were startled and frightened, thinking they saw a ghost. He said to them, “Why are you troubled, and why do doubts rise in your minds? Look at my hands and my feet. It is I myself! Touch me and see; a ghost does not have flesh and bones, as you see I have.” Luke 24:36-39 (NIV)

Stop Worrying

Don’t be surprised that I am with you. Don’t doubt that I am near to you. Have faith that I am working in and through your life. You should have no doubt about that. Do you know why this is so important? You want me to be watching and waiting for your activity in my life. You want me to expectantly look for your activity. You want me to join you in what you are doing. You want me to recognize that your hand is on me. You are with me to help me. I am not all alone by myself in this world. You have not left me to fend for myself. No, I have not. Rather, you will use me according to your purposes and plans. Yes, I will. You want me to rely on you for all your help. Yes, I do.

What will happen to you as you recognize my activity in your life? I will stop worrying. My doubts will be replaced by faith and trust in you. I will come to rely on you rather than on myself. I will become bold as I know that you are working in and through my life. I will be able to do what you ask of me. I will not shrink back in fear or doubt. My timidity will be replaced with your boldness. I will be able to do what cannot be done because you will be using me. Yes, I will. You will enable me to do what you have planned for me to do for you. That’s right.

There is one thing that I want you to stop doing. What’s that? What do you think I’m going to ask of you? You want me to stop worrying. That’s right. What else? You want me to be filled with your peace. That’s also right. Why will you be able to live a life that is filled with my peace? You have given me your peace. Your peace lives and dwells in me by your Spirit. Your peace is a gift that you want me to take full possession of because you are in me, with me, and for me. I have nothing to fear. I have no reason to doubt. I have every reason to have faith in you. Yes, you do.

Lord, thank you that you are living and active in my life. Your presence gives me great peace. I welcome your activity in my life. Surprise me Lord. Do whatever you desire in me, to me and through me. I will joyfully follow you. Amen

Their God Is Their Stomach

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide- The Mind - Philippians 3:18-19 - Their God Is There Stomach - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – The Mind – Philippians 3:18-19 – Their God Is There Stomach – Growing As Disciples

For, as I have often told you before and now say again even with tears, many live as enemies of the cross of Christ. Their destiny is destruction, their god is their stomach, and their glory is in their shame. Their mind is on earthly things. Philippians 3:18-19 (NIV)

Appetites

Your appetite will drive you. I’m not sure what you mean by that. If you hunger for all that the world has to offer that is what you will pursue. You will chase after money. You will be in a race to acquire things. You will live for all the comfort and pleasure that this world has to offer you. Your perspective will be colored only by what you can see in the here and now. Your mind will be set on earthly things. The world will become your idol. Your God will be your own stomach. Your end will lead to destruction. That is what I meant when I said that your appetite would drive you. I get it. You get what? I do not hunger for all that the world offers. I have no appetite for the comfort and pleasures of this world. My mind is not set on the things of this world. I’m not chasing after money. I’m not in a race to acquire things. The world is not my idol, nor is my stomach my god. I have a completely different hunger and thirst. I have a totally different perspective. I am pursuing what this world could never offer me. I want what the world could never give me. Tell me about that.

I want to know you. I hunger and thirst for you. I want to live in a close and intimate relationship with you. I want to know your will. I want to walk in your ways. I want to do what pleases you. You are the pursuit of my life. I want to bear fruit for your kingdom and bring glory to your name. My eyes are not on the things of this world. My eyes are on you. I will follow you to where you lead me. I will do all that you ask of me. My end will not be destruction. No, it will not. I long for the day that I will one day come to live forever in heaven with you. On that day I want to be able to hear you say, “Well done, good and faithful servant.” That is why I am now living my life fully and completely with and for you. That is why the word and all that it offers does not feed my hunger or satisfy my thirst. Only you can feed my hunger and satisfy my thirst. That is why you are my pursuit. That is why I am following you. That is very good.

Lord, I no longer have an appetite for the things of the world. Thank you for giving me a hunger and thirst for you and the life you have called me to live. Thank you that it is my destiny to one day live forever in heaven with you. Amen

She Said To Herself

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - The Mind - Matthew 9:20-22 - She Said To Herself - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – The Mind – Matthew 9:20-22 – She Said To Herself – Growing As Disciples

Just then a woman who had been subject to bleeding for twelve years came up behind him and touched the edge of his cloak. She said to herself, “If I only touch his cloak, I will be healed.” Jesus turned and saw her. “Take heart, daughter,” he said, “your faith has healed you.” And the woman was healed from that moment. Matthew 9:20-22 (NIV)

What Are You Thinking?

What are you thinking? What are you telling yourself? I’m not sure what you mean. What am I thinking about what? What am I telling myself about what? Are you telling yourself that you can live life under your own power and strength? Are you thinking that you don’t want or need my help? I am certainly not thinking or telling myself those thoughts. I need all the help I can get. I need all the power and strength and help and healing that you will give to me. I don’t have all I need. I am not all I need. I desperately need you. Really, I would not have guessed that by your actions. Not that I need to guess about anything. I know you desperately need my help. It just surprises me that you don’t ask for my help and healing very often. I don’t? No, you don’t.

So, let’s go back to my questions. Ask them again. What are you thinking? What are you telling yourself? Do you think I may too busy to hear and answer your prayers? Do you not want to trouble me? Do you think that your small prayers are too small for me to consider? Do you think that your large prayers are too big for me to grant? No, I know you are not too busy to hear and answer my prayers. No, I know that both my small and large prayers are ones that you are ready and willing and able to hear and answer. There is no prayer that is too small or too large to bring to you. I know that I can never bother you by asking for something from you. You delight to meet with me in prayer. That’s right. It is your joy to hear and answer my prayers. That’s true. You are my God and Father. You know how to give good gifts to me. Yes, I do.

Is there something that you would like to do differently? Yes, there is something I would like to do differently. What’s that? With a heart filled with faith, I will bring all my prayers to you. There will be no prayer that is too small or too large to pray to you. That’s right. I will come to you to ask for all your help and healing. That will be very good.

Lord, I know that you hear and answer prayer. I never want to be telling myself or believing anything different than that. Help me to come to you with a heart and mind that are filled with faith to ask for help and healing not only for myself but also for others. Amen

So Is He

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - The Mind - Proverbs 23:7 - So Is He - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – The Mind – Proverbs 23:7 – So Is He – Growing As Disciples

For as he thinks in his heart, so is he. “Eat and drink!” he says to you, But his heart is not with you. Proverbs 23:7 (NKJV)

New Thoughts

What thoughts are you allowing your mind to think? That seems like an odd question to me. Why is that? Your question seems to imply that I can control what I allow my mind to think. You do have the power to control what you allow your mind to think. Your mind is not held captive to whatever thought comes into it. You can decide to think or not think about something. That hardly seems possible to me. Why is that? In deciding I will not think about something won’t I be thinking about it? No, you can decide to leave unwanted and unhelpful, worldly and sinful thoughts behind you. I would like to do that.

Let’s be very clear about something. What’s that? The thoughts that you allow your heart to think will guide the entire course of your life. Your thoughts will become your words and your words will become your deeds. Your thoughts and words and deeds will add up to be the quality and character of your life. Your thoughts and words and deeds will determine all that you will think, say and do. So, what I allow my mind to think is a very important issue. I will need to take control of all my thoughts and words and deeds. Let’s talk more about that. I would like to do that.

You said that seemed hardly possible that you could decide what you will and will not think. Yes, I did. You were almost right about that. Why was I not completely right. You should have said, it is impossible for me to control the thoughts of my mind. Then I would have agreed with you. Now, I am confused. On your own, with your own power, using your efforts alone, you will not be able to control the thoughts of your mind. That’s what I thought. But, didn’t want to say it. Why is that? I didn’t want to admit defeat. Don’t admit defeat. Admit that you need my help. Come to rely on me. Let me change your heart, transform your mind and guide your life. Let me give you new thoughts to think. I would like that.

How will you change my heart, transform my mind and guide my life? How will you give me new thoughts to think, words to speak and deeds to do? I will use my word. Let my word dwell in your heart and mind. Allow my word to guide your life. Meditate on my word day and night. My word will be like a sword to fight in you, with you and for you. My word will make you able to think my thoughts and walk in my ways. My word will make you able to think thoughts, speak words and do deeds that are pleasing to me. Will you allow my word to dwell in your heart and mind and life? Yes Lord, I will. Then you will become the person I have called you to be. Then you will live the life I have called you to live. That is what I want. That is very good.

Lord, help me to think thoughts that please you. I want your thoughts to guide the thoughts of my heart, words of my mouth and deeds of my life. Transform my thoughts so I will think and speak and act in ways that are consistent with your will and ways. Amen

The Greatest Commandment

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - The Mind - Matthew 22:36-40 - The Greatest Commandment - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – The Mind – Matthew 22:36-40 – The Greatest Commandment – Growing As Disciples

“Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?” Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.” Matthew 22:36-40 (NIV)

I Love You

I know that you love me. Of that, I am certain. Why is that? You sent your one and only Son into the world to die for me. You made it possible for my sins to be forgiven and my unrighteousness cleansed. You rescued me from a life without you. You pulled me off the path that led away from you. You broke down the barrier that separated me from you. You made it possible for me to live and walk in an intimate relationship with you. You restored my soul. You have revived and refreshed my life. You have given me a hunger and thirst for you and the life that you have for me. You put your Holy Spirit within me as a deposit guaranteeing that I have a future in heaven with you. You have given me your word so that I can know your will and walk in your ways. You have filled my life with hope and meaning and purpose. You have given me gifts and talents and abilities with which I can bear fruit for your kingdom and bring glory to your name. Throughout all the twists and turns and ups and downs of life you have been with me to comfort and encourage me. You have kept me moving forward with you. You are molding and shaping my life so I will  become the person you have called me to be. You draw near to me as I draw near to you. You hear and answer my prayers. For all of these things and for much more I give you all my thanks and praise. That is every good.

Is there something else that you want to give to me? I want to give you myself. I am all yours. I am at your disposal. I am fully devoted to you. I now love you, because you first loved me. It is my joy to say that I love you with all my heart and mind and soul. I will go where you guide me, to do what you ask of me. Not because, I should or must, but because I love you. I want to do what is pleasing to you. I want to live my life with and for you. It is the desire of my heart to know and love you. It is the goal of my life to follow and serve you. Use me for your purposes. Help me to fulfill your plans. Yes, I will.

Heavenly Father, I love you because you first loved me. You loved me when I was unlovable. Now, I do love you with all my heart and mind and soul and strength. Help me to better and more fully express my love to you as I follow and serve you every day. Amen

Therefore, since Christ suffered in his body, arm yourselves also with the same attitude, because he who has suffered in his body is done with sin. As a result, he does not live the rest of his earthly life for evil human desires, but rather for the will of God. 1 Peter 4:1-2 (NIV)

Armed With Attitude

I have wasted a lot of time. I thought what I shouldn’t have thought. I said what I shouldn’t have said. I did what I shouldn’t have done. I lived entirely for my own comfort and pleasure. I did whatever I pleased. I was guilty of living a dark and sinful life. Those days are over. Those thoughts and words and deeds are long gone. You rescued me from that life without you. You pulled me off the course that I was on. You paid for my sins. You cleansed me of all my unrighteousness. You freely gave up your life so I could have a new life in you. You suffered and died on my behalf. Yes, I did.

What kind of life do you now want to live? I want to live a life that is pleasing to you. I want to follow you to wherever you lead me. I want to do whatever you ask of me. I want to follow your example. I want my heart and mind and life to be armed with the same attitude that you had when you lived your life as a man in this life.  I want to give like you gave. I want to serve like you served. I will no longer live for myself. I will no longer live for the pleasures of this world. My eyes are on you. I now know that I am just a visitor passing through this world. My real and future home is with you in heaven. I now know that I am here for a reason. You have given my life meaning. You have given my life purpose. You want to use me as your witness in the world. You want my life to shine brightly for you. You want to use me. You want to bear fruit through my life that will last for all eternity. You want me to share the good news of the Gospel with others. You want my thoughts and words and deeds to be a testimony of the life of salvation that can be had in you. You want to speak to others through my life. You want an abundance of people to be drawn to you so that they can also come to live in your kingdom. Will you allow me to use you? Will you serve me? Will you live your life as a bright and shining witness for me? Will you share the Good News of salvation in me with others? Yes, Lord, I will do all that you ask of me with joy and devotion in my heart. It is my pleasure to serve you. That is very good.

Lord, I am tired of thinking self-centered, worldly and sinful thoughts. I want your thoughts instead of my own. Replace my attitudes with your same attitude. Help me to think, speak and act just as you would in all that I face in life. Amen
