Liberty To The Captives

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Freedom - Luke 4:18-19 - Liberty To The Captives - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Freedom – Luke 4:18-19 – Liberty To The Captives – Growing As Disciples

“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.” Luke 4:18-19 (ESV)

Like Me

Do you want to be like me? Do you want to live the kind of life I lived? Do you want to go and do what I did? Do you want to follow my example? Do you want to think my thoughts? Do you want to speak my words? Do you want to do my deeds? Do you want to live the life that I am calling you to live? Yes Lord, I want to yes to every question that you have asked of me. I want to be like you. I want to go and do what you did. I want to think your thoughts, speak your words and do your deeds. I want to know your will and walk in your ways. I want to fulfill your purposes and accomplish your plans for my life. I will follow your example. I will live the life that you are calling me to live. That is very good.

What can I expect? What will I look like? Where will I go and what will I do? Do those seem like good questions to you? I thought so, maybe not. I’m not sure. Let me hear your answers to you own questions. If I follow you, I will go where you lead me and do what you ask of me. I will go and do what you did.  What did I do? You proclaimed good news to the poor. You proclaimed liberty to the captives and those who were oppressed. You proclaimed recovering of sight to the blind. Yes, I did. Can you go and do these things? Not on my own I can’t, that’s for sure. You are right about that. Am I asking you to go and do anything with your own power and strength? No, you are not. What are my promises to you? You will lead me. You will guide me. You will teach and train me. You will always be with me to help me. Yes, I will. What else? You will fill me with your Holy Spirit. Your Holy Spirit will give me the ability and power to do whatever you ask of me. That’s right. I am excited to live the life that you have called me to live. That is very good.

Lord, I want to become like you in all my thoughts and words and deeds. I want to go and do what you did. Use me to proclaim your good news to the poor, liberty to the captives and oppressed and sight to the blind as I love, follow and serve you every day. Amen

Of Good Cheer

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Be - John 16:33 - Of Good Cheer - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Be – John 16:33 – Of Good Cheer – Growing As Disciples

These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.” John 16:33 (NKJV)

Tribulation

This is your warning. I don’t want you to be taken by surprise. What is my warning? What don’t you want to take me by surprise? You will go through tribulations in life. No kidding. That will come as no surprise to me. Why is that? I have gone through so many tribulations in life already. Sometimes, it seems like, if I’m not in or just leaving some form of tribulation I’m about to enter a new one. Yes, this life is full of tribulations. This is a sin filled and sin broken world that you live in. I went through tribulations. You will go through tribulations. I was not exempt from tribulations, neither will you be exempt from tribulations. You can count on them coming your way. Thanks for the warning. I have much more than a warning to give you. What else do you want to give me? I want to give you hope. I want to give you encouragement. I want you to be filled with good cheer.

How can I be filled with hope, encouragement and good cheer as I go through tribulations? I overcame the world. You will overcome the world. In every tribulation, you can rely on me. In every tribulation, you can hold on to me. In every tribulation, you can look to me for help. I will be your strength. I will be with you to help you. I will hold on to you as you hold on to me. I will draw near to you as you draw near to me. Tribulations will cause you to rely on me. Tribulations will deepen your relationship with me. Tribulations will focus all your attention on the hope you have in me, both now and forever. Tribulations will remind you that this world is not your home. Tribulations will cause you to remember that you have a future forever in heaven with me. Will you rely on me in every tribulation? Will you look to me for all the help you will need as you go through tribulations? Will you keep your heart and mind and life focused on me as you go through tribulations? Will you consider all the hope you have in me? Will you take courage? Will you be bold and unafraid of whatever tribulation may come your way, because you know that I am with you to help you? Yes Lord, I will. That will be very good.

Lord, I am not a fan of going through tribulations. Thank you for being with me through every tribulation. You have been my peace. You have been my hope. You have been my joy. My future is secure with you. You have held on to me as I have held on to you. Amen

Completely Humble And Gentle

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Be - Ephesians 4:1-3 - Completely Humble And Gentle - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Be – Ephesians 4:1-3 – Completely Humble And Gentle – Growing As Disciples

As a prisoner for the Lord, then, I urge you to live a life worthy of the calling you have received. Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace. Ephesians 4:1-3 (NIV)

Cancelled

This was one of those days that I wish I could start over or maybe even cancel altogether. No, seriously, if I could crawl back into bed and pull the covers over my head and cancel today that would be my choice. This has been a discouraging and depressing day, that is for sure. Why is that? What was so bad about today? You saw today. Yes, I did. You know my thoughts. You heard my words. You saw my actions. Yes, I did. Was there something you didn’t like about your thoughts, words and actions? I don’t like anything about my thoughts, words or actions of today. Why is that? I started the day out by being crabby and it went downhill from there. How so? I was so impatient. I was completely opinionated. I was full of pride. There was nothing about my thoughts or words or deeds that was humble and gentle. I did not patiently bear with others. I didn’t listen well. I was quick to speak. Instead, it was more like I wanted to crush others in a debate. I wanted to win the argument. I would have to sadly say that I was full of myself today. I don’t like that one bit, not at all. So, there is nothing good about today? This day cannot be redeemed? This day cannot be used, even by me, is that right? I wouldn’t go that far. With you anything is possible. You can redeem this day. You can make this day count for something. Yes, I can.

Do you think you lived your life today in a manner that is worthy of your calling? No, I did not live my life today in a manner that is worthy of my calling. Isn’t that an important lesson? Isn’t that something valuable for you to recognize? Yes, it is a valuable lesson and an important realization. You are also confessing to me that you missed the mark. You went off course. You made mistakes. You sinned. You are asking for my forgiveness. Yes, I am asking for your forgiveness. You are forgiven. The day is not over. What will you do with the rest of your day? I will keep on moving forward with you. I will keep on asking you to develop humility and patience and gentleness in me. Have I not been doing that for you? Will I continue to do that in you? Will I help you to live a life worthy of my calling every day as you follow and serve me? Yes Lord, I know that you will continue to do your work in me as I live my life with and for you. That is very good.

Lord, I have not had a good day. I have been argumentative. I have been opinionated. I have been filled with pride. I have not been patient. I have not been gentle. Forgive me. Help me to live a humble and gentle and patient life that is worthy of my calling. Amen

Called To Go

Discipleship Study - Faith - Hebrews 11:8 - Called To Go - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Study – Faith – Hebrews 11:8 – Called To Go – Growing As Disciples

By faith Abraham, when called to go to a place he would later receive as his inheritance, obeyed and went, even though he did not know where he was going. Hebrews 11:8 (NIV)

Go And Do

Will you go where I guide you? Will you do what I ask of you?  Yes, certainly, I will go where you guide me and do what you ask of me. That was a very quick answer. You did not let me clarify what I am asking you.  Great, I like clarity. Clarity would make it much easier for me to go where you guide me to do what you ask of me. The more details the better. I like to know where I am going and what I will be doing before I make any decisions. So, I am very glad that you will give me all the clarity that I will need. Now, you have had nearly an entire conversation with yourself. What do you mean by that? Slow down and listen to what I have to say to you. I’m listening, I won’t say a word. I doubt that.

I wanted to make it clear that I will sometimes ask you to go and do something for me without details. My only instruction may be for you to go. You will not have the clarity of knowing every detail before you make your decision to go and do what I ask of you. What? On what basis would I be making my decision? I will tell you one thing. What’s that? You would not be making your decision based on your own knowledge and understanding. That sounds a little scary to me. Yes, following me will require you to have courage. But, your question was a good one that I will let you answer. If I say yes to you without knowing any details I will be making my decision based on my love for you. What does love have to do with you making a decision to follow me? If I love you I will go and do whatever you ask of me. I won’t think it over. I won’t evaluate. I won’t hesitate. I will simply go where you guide me. I will just do what you ask of me. To know that you were asking something of me would be enough. I would not go half-heartedly. I would not go with deep reservations. I would not go with timid steps of regret. I would not longingly look back at what I had left behind. I would joyfully respond to your call. I would rely on you for all that I need to go where you guide me to do what you ask of me. That will be very good.

Heavenly Father, help me to hear the voice of your Holy Spirit guiding me to do what you are asking me to go and do for you. Give me strength to obey you and do what you ask of me even if it is difficult or I don’t fully understand. Amen

Be Kind To Everyone

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Character - 2 Timothy 2:24-26 - Be Kind To Everyone - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Character – 2 Timothy 2:24-26 – Be Kind To Everyone – Growing As Disciples

And the Lord’s servant must not quarrel; instead, he must be kind to everyone, able to teach, not resentful. Those who oppose him he must gently instruct, in the hope that God will grant them repentance leading them to a knowledge of the truth, and that they will come to their senses and escape from the trap of the devil, who has taken them captive to do his will. 2 Timothy 2:24-26 (NIV)

Yes

Do you want to have abundant opportunities to minister to others? Do you want to bear fruit for my kingdom? Do you want to bring glory to my name? Do you want to shine as a bright witness for me in the world? Do you want to be used by me? Do you want to accomplish my purposes and fulfill my plans? Who would say no to any one of your questions? You would be surprised at how many are unwilling to do what is necessary to be able to say an emphatic and resounding yes to my questions. Many will say yes in their minds and no in their hearts to the questions that I have asked of you. What does that mean? What must I do to say an emphatic and resounding yes to your questions? How can I answer your questions with a yes in both my mind and heart? Those are very good questions.

Let me ask you some more questions. I’m listening. What will hinder your ability to be used by me? What will open doors of opportunity for you to be used by me? If I love like you loved I will be used by you. If others can see your life being lived in and through me doors of ministry will be opened to me. That’s right. If I fail to live like you lived then that will hinder my ability to be used by you. What might that look like? If I was unkind, no one would want to give me the time of day. If I was harsh, no one would have any desire to listen to me. If I was filled with pride and full of resentment, others would make every effort to stay far away from me. That’s right.

Now do you know what it will require of you to say an emphatic and resounding yes in your heart and mind to my questions? I think so. Let me hear your answer. If I really want to be used by you, I will need to take on the form of a servant. Life will need to cease to be all about me. I will need to set aside my privileges and rights. In doing so, I will give of myself to others. I will love like you loved. I will give like you gave. I will do what you did. I will be loving and kind and gentle. I will make it my purpose, plan and goal to win others over to you. I will allow you to use my life to help others escape the devil’s grasp. That will be very good. Then you will be saying an emphatic and resounding yes to me. Then I will use you to bear fruit for my kingdom and bring glory to my name.

Lord, I know that being quarrelsome will make me an ineffective and unfruitful witness for you in the world. Instead of quarreling I will treat everyone with your gentleness, kindness, mercy and love. Help me to bear abundant fruit for your kingdom and glory. Amen

Reconciled

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Be - Matthew 5:23-24 - Reconciled - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Be – Matthew 5:23-24 – Reconciled – Growing As Disciples

So if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your gift there before the altar and go. First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift. Matthew 5:23-24 (ESV)

First Move

I know that you want me to be reconciled to others. I know that you don’t want me to hold on to grudges and carry resentment. I know that you want me to forgive others just as you have forgiven me. You want me to love others just like you have loved me. I get all of this. I understand what you are asking of me. I know how you want me to live. I know what is expected of me if I want to live as one of your witnesses in the world. So far you are on the right track. But, a question is coming. You have something you would like to discuss. There has been reluctance on your part to do something that I have also asked of you. Let me hear your question. Let’s have our discussion.

Why do I need to go to someone that is holding something against me? Aren’t they wrongly holding a grudge or carrying resentment? Aren’t they failing to forgive me just as you forgave them? Aren’t they failing to love others just like you loved them? Why do I need to fix their problem? You are their problem. But, you are right, they do need to let go of grudges and resentments. They do need to love and forgive just like they have been loved and forgiven. You can be sure, that It will not be your job to set them straight on these matters. That is not the reason that you must go to be reconciled to those who have something against you. When someone has something against you don’t assume that you are faultless. Don’t simply think that another person has a problem, that is theirs alone, that they need to get over. I will say it again, you are their problem. That is why you need to go and be reconciled to them. You need to humble yourself and ask what you have done to offend another person. This may be a revelation to you. You might discover a flaw in your behavior. You may discover something that you have said or done that is offensive. You may have an opportunity to confess your sin and ask for forgiveness. You may have an opportunity to live in a restored relationship. You may have an opportunity to shine brightly as my witness in the world. You may have an opportunity to bear fruit for my kingdom and bring glory to my name. Will you go and be reconciled to anyone who has something against you? Yes Lord, I will. That will be very good.

Lord, I have been resistant to the idea of going to be reconciled to someone who has something against me. I have wrongly thought they should make the first move if they have a problem with me. Forgive me. Help me, to make the first move and go to them. Amen

Come – See

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Rhythms - John 4:29 - Come - See - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Rhythms – John 4:29 – Come – See – Growing As Disciples

“Come, see a man who told me everything I ever did. Could this be the Christ?” John 4:29 (NIV)

Show Yourself To Me

My life was a mess. I was living a life that was going nowhere. I was lost and unwilling to ask for directions. I was walking down a dark path that led away from you. I don’t know why I thought I knew it all. I was living a self-centered, self-indulgent and self-sufficient life. I’m not sure why I thought I did not want or need anyone’s help. Why is that? My life was reaping the wages that I was sowing. I was living a sinful life that was paying back death. What did that look like? I was using others as I was being used. I was living for my own comfort and pleasure. The funny thing is that I was not experiencing much comfort and pleasure. That doesn’t sound funny. No, it wasn’t. It was painful. It was more ironic than funny, that I was living for comfort and pleasure and being wounded as a result. I was being harmed and hurt as I was hurting and harming others. But, you got my attention. How so? My life could only take so much bruising and battering. In my brokenness, I cried out to you. I asked you to show yourself to me. Yes, you did.

You did what I wanted you to do. What was that? I was calling you to come to me. I wanted to show myself to you. I wanted you to come and see me and the new life that I wanted to give to you. That’s exactly what you did. I did get your attention. You got a lot more than my attention. Say more about that. You got my whole life. You got me. I turned away from my old life. I told you that I wanted to leave my sinful life.  I said that I wanted to follow you as my Savior and Lord. Yes, you did. That is what I have been doing. I have been following you as my Savior and Lord. I have been going where you guided me. I have been doing what you asked of me. It is now my delight to know and do your will. I will never tire of coming to you. I will never grow weary of seeing what you want to show me. I will keep on coming to you. I will draw near to you as I know that you will draw near to me. It will always be the priority of my life to make a time and a place to meet with you. That will be very good. You are my Savior and Lord. You are my God and King. Yes, I am.

Lord, you made it possible for me to come to you. You gave me an interest and created an opportunity for me to come to see you. You gave me a hunger and thirst for you and the new life you had for me. Use me to help others to come to give their lives to you. Amen

With You

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Be - Psalm 16:7-8 - Shaken- Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Be – Psalm 16:7-8 – Shaken- Growing As Disciples

I will praise the LORD, who counsels me; even at night my heart instructs me. I have set the LORD always before me. Because he is at my right hand, I will not be shaken. Psalm 16:7-8 (NIV)

With You

You are not on your own. I am with you to help you. I will counsel you. I will instruct you. I will teach you. I will watch over you. I will guide you through life. Do not be afraid. Don’t let yourself be shaken. You will not stumble. You will not fall. I will hold you up. I will keep you going. I will restore you. I will refresh you. I will strengthen you. You can rely on me. Do you believe what I am saying to you? Will you place all your trust in me? Will you rely on me rather than in anything or on anyone else?  Lord, I do believe what you are saying to me. I will place my complete trust in you. I will not rely in anything or on anyone other than you. You are my fortress. You are my deliverer. You are my refuge and strength. I will hold on to you as I know that you are holding on to me. That will be very good.

I have all provided for you. I have already given all that you will need, so you will not be shaken. What have you given to me? I am not asking out of ignorance. I’m not asking out of unbelief. I’m asking this question out of faith. I want to hear again how you have provided for me, so that I will not be shaken. That’s very good. I am delighted to answer your question. I have given you myself. You can live in an intimate relationship with me. You can hear my voice. You can receive my counsel. I have given you my Spirit. You can receive my refreshment. You can receive my guidance. I will lead you to where I want you to go and give you what I want you to do. I will make you able to know and do my will. You will accomplish my purposes and fulfill my plans for your life. I have set boundaries for your life that will keep and guard you. You will not go where you should not go. You will not do what you should not do. I have given you my body. I have placed you among my followers. You can give and receive encouragement from each other as you love, follow and serve me. I have given you the ability to worship me. My praise will be on your lips as you walk with me through life. Thank you Lord for all that you have given to me. Thank you Lord for always being with me to keep me from never being shaken.

Lord, you are my only source of security in this uncertain and unpredictable life. I will take refuge in you. I will rely on you. I know that you are always with me. I know I never need be shaken. Thank you for being with me to counsel and guide me through life. Amen

Remains In Me

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Character - John 15:5 - Remains In Me - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Character – John 15:5 – Remains In Me – Growing As Disciples

“I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. John 15:5 (NIV)

Well Done

My life has not been particularly fruitful. That sounds like a dramatic understatement to me. The truth is, my life has been like a barren wasteland. I have worked extremely hard and accomplished very little. Oh sure, I can point to achievements that the world might recognize and applaud. But, at the end of the day, at the end of my life, what will stand the test of time and last for all eternity? That is a very good question. Many go through their entire life without asking any questions like that. You want your life to have mattered. You want your life to have made a mark. You want to be able to look back over your life and see that it was well spent. Most of all, you want to hear me say, “Well done, good and faithful servant!” Have I heard you correctly? Is all that I have said about you true? Yes, I want my life to count. I want to make a mark. I want my life to have been well spent.

How will you know if your life counted, made its mark and was well spent? That may sound like a difficult and unanswerable question. It is an easy question for me to answer. Really, let me hear your answer. I will know if my life counted, made its mark and was well spent if I went and did your will. How will you know my will? How will you be able to go and do my will? Again, that is not a difficult question to answer. I will know your will if I have listened to you. To listen to you I must live in an intimate relationship with you. I must spend time in your presence. I quiet myself before you. I must wait for your instructions. I must receive your guidance. I also know that you will ask me to do what I cannot possibly do without your help. Why is that? You want me to live a life of relying on you. You want me to follow you to where you lead me. You want me to do what you ask of me. You want me to rely on your power and strength to help me to do what only you can do in and through me. As I go where you guide me and do what you ask of me, I know that I will be accomplishing your purposes and fulfilling your plans. That’s right. If I keep on loving, following and serving you, I will one day hear you say, “Well done, good and faithful servant!” Yes, you will.

Lord, I know that apart for you I can do nothing. My life has been an example of working hard and accomplishing nothing of eternal value. I want to be fruitful for you. Help me to remain in you so I will bear fruit for your kingdom and bring glory to your name. Amen

Shrinks Back

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - If - Hebrews 10:38-39 - Shrinks Back- Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – If – Hebrews 10:38-39 – Shrinks Back- Growing As Disciples

But my righteous one will live by faith. And if he shrinks back, I will not be pleased with him.” But we are not of those who shrink back and are destroyed, but of those who believe and are saved. Hebrews 10:38-39 (NIV)

Faith Over Fear

Can you hear my voice? Are you making yourself attentive to me? Are you listening to all that I want to say to you? I can hear your voice. I have set a time and a place to meet with you. Yes, I am making myself attentive to you. Am I listening to all that you have to say to me? That’s a good question. I want to say yes. I doubt that I am hearing all that you want to say to me. I am straining to hear you. I am listening carefully to you. It is my delight and joy hearing you speak to me. I don’t want to miss out on one word that you have to say to me. I have something that I want to say to you right now. I’m listening. You have my full attention. That’s good.

There is something that I want you to know. There is something that I want you to be able to recognize. There is something that I don’t want you to be surprised by. There is something that I want you to come to expect. Now, I’m really curious. What is this something that you are talking about? You will be faced with a choice throughout your life. This choice will appear again and again and over and over as you follow me. This choice will never be a one and done kind of choice. Tell me more. You first made this choice when you came to believe in me. You turned away from your sin and told me that you were going to follow me as your Savior and Lord. Yes, I did. I am your Savior and Lord. On the day you turned your life over to me your life of salvation began. My being your Savior and Lord is a settled question. You being my follower is a settled question. Your future in heaven forever with me is a settled question. Is this all clear to you? Yes, I have no doubt that you are my Savior and Lord and that I am your follower. One day I will come to live forever in heaven with you. Good, lets go back to the choice that will keep repeating itself in your life. Let’s talk about the choice that you will be required to answer again and again and over and over. I want to know more about this choice. You will have the choice of faith over fear. I’m not exactly sure what you mean. Oh, I think you know exactly what I mean. When have you been afraid? When have I asked you to choose faith in me over your fears? When have I asked you to go and do something for me that caused you to face one of your fears? I get it. Will you have faith in me? Will you keep following me? Will you move forward with me? Will you do what I ask of you? Will you allow me to overcome your fears and grow your faith in me? Will you choose faith over fear? Yes Lord, I will choose faith in you over my fears. That will be very good.

Lord, I have been faced with the choice of faith over fear many times. Forgive me for not always making the right choice. Thank you for allowing me to hear your voice leading me through life. I will follow you as my Savior and Lord. I will move forward with you. Amen
