I Will Come In

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Prayer – Revelation 3:20 – I Will Come In – Growing As Disciples

Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with him, and he with me. Revelation 3:20 (NIV)

You Started This

You started this. I started what? You started my relationship with you. I would like to hear you say a lot more about that. You pursued me. I’m embarrassed and sad to say that I had no interest in you. My heart and mind and life were busy. My heart and mind and life were distracted. How so? I was pursuing what interested me. I was living the life I wanted to live. I lived for myself. I was self-sufficient, self-indulgent and self-reliant. I thought that I didn’t need or want anything from anybody, including you. I know how that sounds now. How does that sound? It sounds pathetic. It sounds ridiculous. It sounds arrogant. It is hard for me to admit. It is difficult for me to confess. I was desperately in need of you and I did not know it. That’s true.

That’s not the end of the story. I’m thankful that there is much more to the story. Let me hear the rest of the story. You would not let me go. You kept on pursuing me. You kept on reaching out to me. You kept on trying to get my attention. You knew it was just a matter of time before I would turn to you. Why is that? Your word says that the wages of sin is death. I was living a dark and sinful life. It was just a matter of time before I would begin to receive the full wages of the life I was living. My wages were pain and suffering. My way of life left me bruised and battered and broken. My course left me with no purpose and meaning or hope. Peace and joy were out of question. Finally, I reached rock bottom. You knew I would. Yes, I did. You knew that I would cry out to you. You knew that I would ask you for help. Yes, I did.

You were not far away from me. You were right next to me. You did not judge and condemn me, when I cried out to you. No, I did not. You came right into my heart and mind and life when I confessed my sin and turned my life over to you. Yes, I did. You had been waiting. You had been knocking. You were waiting for me to invite you into my heart and mind and life. Yes, I was.

What about now? What do you mean? I want to come into your heart and mind and life every day. I want us to live in an intimate relationship together. I want us to live in a constant dialogue of prayer together. What do you want? I want the very same thing. There is no place I would rather be than in your presence. There is nothing I would hear than your voice. There is no person I would rather talk to than you. So, you will keep on welcoming me into your heart and mind and life? Yes, I will. That will be very good.

Lord, I hear you knocking. You have gotten my full attention. I clearly hear your voice. I am listening attentively to you. I am opening the door to you. I welcome you to come into my heart and mind and life. Help me to live in an intimate life of prayer with you. Amen

Ask Or Imagine

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Prayer – Ephesians 3:20-21 – Ask Or Imagine – Growing As Disciples

Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen. Ephesians 3:20-21 (NIV)

You want more. I can see that. You are not likely to ever become complacent. You are always likely to have some measure of dissatisfaction within you. You will never sit down to rest on your laurels. Yesterday’s accomplishments are old news to you. You want to press on. You want to keep on moving forward. For you there are bigger hills to climb. There is more to be accomplished. Do I have a clear picture of what is at work in you? Do I understand your makeup? You made me. You have molded and shaped me. You understand me better than I understand myself. Nothing about me is hidden from you. That’s right.

Do you think I want more for you? Yes, I am certain that you want more for me. I’m sure that there is much more that you want to do in me, for me and through me. I think the desire in me for more comes from you. That’s true. Do you think I am unhappy with you? Do you think that I am dissatisfied with your progress? I think you are pointing out a danger to me. What’s that? Since, I continually want more there is a danger that I might be unhappy and dissatisfied with myself. If I allow those kinds of thoughts to dwell in me, I am likely to become discouraged and depressed. If I am discouraged and depressed, I am not likely to be moving forward with you. Being discouraged and depressed will make it harder for your work in me, for me and through me to be accomplished. Being discouraged and depressed will also hamper the prayers I pray to you. Maybe, I should come back to your question. That would be good. I don’t think you are dissatisfied or unhappy with me. You’re right. Your desire for more is pleasing to me. You want me to hold on to you so you can lead me through life. You want me to keep praying to you. You want to hear and answer my prayers in ways that are beyond what I could ask for, think or even imagine. That’s right, I want to hear your prayers. I will answer your prayers. I will do in you, for you and through you far beyond what you could ever ask, think or even imagine. Will you keep on praying? Will you keep on asking for more? Yes Lord, I will. That will be very good.

Lord, I will pray prayers filled with faith. I believe there is no prayer that is either too small or too large to pray. I believe that you will hear and answer all my prayers in ways far beyond what I could ask for, think, or even begin to imagine. Thank you for that. Amen

They asked each other, “Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?” Luke 24:30-32 (NIV)

Ignite

That’s exactly what I want. What is exactly what you want? I want you to ignite my faith. I want you to give me a passionate desire to love, follow and serve you. Do you not already have a passionate desire to love, follow and serve me? Yes, I do. I love you with all my heart and mind and soul and strength. But, I want more. What more do you want? I want to burn white hot for you. I want to shine brightly for you in this dark world. I have heard it said that I could shine brightly like a star in the universe for you. That’s what I want. I want to be so passionate in loving you that nothing will stop me from moving forward with you. I don’t want to move forward slowly. I don’t want to move forward reluctantly. I don’t want to move forward half-heartedly. I want to be all in. I want to faithfully go where you guide me. I want to boldly do what you ask of me. I want no retreats. I want no regrets. I want to hold nothing in reserve. That is very good.

How will you receive what you want? First, I believe that I want what you want. I believe that all I have said I want, comes from you. None of these desires could have originated in me. That’s true. These desires did not originate in you. That gives me great confidence. Why is that? I know that you are both a giver and granter of desires. I know that I can confidently ask you to grant a desire that you have clearly placed in my heart. Yes, you can. So, I will receive what I want by asking for it from you. I will seek you with all my heart and mind and soul and strength. I will keep on asking you to set me on fire for you. I will keep on asking you to make me burn white hot for you. I will keep on asking you to help me to faithfully go where you guide me to boldly do what you ask of me. Then I will shine brightly like a star in the universe for you. Then I will bear fruit for your kingdom and bring glory to your name. Yes, you will.

Lord, I will make myself attentive to your voice. I will listen carefully to everything you want to say to me. Lead me through all the setbacks, and disappointments of life. Ignite my faith. Set me on fire. Give me a passionate desire to love, follow and serve you. Amen

I Put My Hope In You

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Prayer – Psalm 25:4-5 – I Put My Hope In You – Growing As Disciples

Show me the right path, O LORD; point out the road for me to follow. Lead me by your truth and teach me, for you are the God who saves me. All day long I put my hope in you. Psalm 25:4-5 (NLT)

Humbly Ask

Do you want me to show you the right path? Do you really want me to point out the right road to follow? Do you want me to lead you? Do you really want me to teach you? Without hesitation, I will say to you, I want you to show me the right path. Yes, I want you to point out the right road for me to follow. With all that is within me, I will say to you, I want you to lead and teach me. That is very good.

If you want me to lead and teach you there are some things that you must do. What’s that? It is not enough for you to say with your words that you want me to lead and teach you. What must I do? You must humbly ask me to lead and teach you. Notice that I have used two very important words. What words? I have used the words “humbly” and “ask”. What has prevented you from listening to my teaching and following my guidance in the past? I see, I have pridefully relied on myself. I have followed my own guidance. I have listened to my own instruction. Where has that led you? I have mistakenly gone where I should not have gone. I have foolishly done what I should not have done. Since, I was not listening to you, I have been unable to know and do your will. What will help you to know and do my will? I will humbly come to rely on you. I will humbly ask you to lead and guide my life. I will humbly ask you to teach me. I will place all my hope in you. That will be very good.

There are two more things that you must do if you want me to lead and teach you. What’s that? Once you have come to rely on me in prayer you must wait for my answers to your prayers. What has happened when you have not waited for me to answer your prayers? I might as well have not prayed when I have not waited for your answers. Why is that? Once again, I have rushed off and gone where I should not have gone to do what I should not have done. That’s true. So, will you wait for me to answer your prayers? Yes, I will. Then there is one more thing that you must do if you want me to lead and teach you. What’s that? You must listen to my instruction and follow my guidance. It is not enough to pray and then wait to hear from me. You must put into practice what I will teach you. You must go where I guide you. You must do what I ask of you. Will you do that? Yes Lord, I will. I will humbly come to you in prayer. I will wait for you to answer my prayers. Then I will listen to you. I will go where you guide me and do all that you ask of me. In every way, I will place all my hope in you as I love, follow and serve you. That will be very good.

Lord, I have often pridefully relied on myself for my own guidance. I have mistakenly gone where I should not have gone and foolishly done what I should not have done. I have learned my lesson. Now, I will wholeheartedly rely on you to teach and guide me. Amen

I Had To Be

“Why were you searching for me?” he asked. “Didn’t you know I had to be in my Father’s house?” But they did not understand what he was saying to them. Luke 2:49-50 (NIV)

Your Business

I want to be about your business. I want to know and do you will. I want to accomplish your purposes and fulfill your plans. I don’t want to go about my own business. I don’t want to live out my own plan. To do so, would be misspending my life. Of that, I have no doubt. Of that, I am absolutely certain. That’s good for you to know.

How will you come to know and do my will? How will you have any idea of what my purpose and plan is for your life? How will you know if you are being about my business? How will you know the difference between your plan and my plan? Those are all very good questions. They only have one answer. What’s that? If I want to be about your business, I must come and meet with you in prayer. I must ask you to help me to know and do your will. I must ask you to show me your purpose and plans for my life. That’s true.

Will I unfold my purpose and plan for your life all at once? Certainly not. Why not? You want me to live in an intimate relationship with you. If you unfolded your entire purpose and plan for my life, I might come to think that I could, “take it from here.” I might come to think that I only need to occasionally check back in with you. That would mistake. Yes, it would. Tell me why. It would never work. I would never stay on course. I have not been made to live a life that is separate and independent with you. Your thoughts and ways are so much higher than mine. I will continue to need your wisdom and direction every day as I love, follow and serve you. Most importantly, it is your purpose and plan that I live in an intimate relationship with you. Everything else in life is secondary to that. That’s true.

What do you already know about being about my business? Meeting with you in prayer is being about your business. Being about your business is not different or separate from meeting with you in prayer. How so? You will accomplish your purposes and fulfill your plans in and through prayer. Prayer is work. It is not like I will stop praying and start working. You will give me prayers to pray. Yes, I will. Your work will be accomplished through prayer. Yes, it will.

What steps will you take to be about my business? Every day, I will meet with you in prayer. I will talk with you. I will listen to you. I will pray the prayers that you give me to pray. I will ask for your guidance. I will follow your direction. I will go where you guide me. I will do what you ask of me. Then I will be about your business. Yes, you will.

Heavenly Father, I certainly need to be meeting with you in prayer. Meeting with you in prayer is the desire of my heart. Fan that flame of desire. Draw me closer to you. Show me how I can be about your business. Give my life your purpose and direction. Amen

Forget Not

Praise the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits– who forgives all your sins and heals all your diseases, who redeems your life from the pit and crowns you with love and compassion, who satisfies your desires with good things so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s. Psalm 103:1-5 (NIV)

Remember

I don’t ever want to forget. I want always to remember all that you have done for me. I don’t want to be thoughtless. I don’t want to be callous. I don’t want to be forgetful. I want to think deeply about all that you have done for me. I want to return to give you thanks and praise for your many blessings. You have given me so much. You have richly blessed my life. How? How have you blessed my life? Yes, that is my question. I’m sure you know. Yes, I do know. It will be a good thing for you to remember all that I have done for you. Do you have a specific reason in mind? Yes, I do. But, you tell me why it is a good thing for you to remember all that I have done for you.

You like to hear me express my thanks and praise to you. Acknowledging your love and compassion is one way for me to tell you that I am relying on you. I know that my help comes from you. I have not redeemed my life from the pit. I did not pull myself off the road that led away from you. I could do nothing to earn your forgiveness. I could not scrub myself clean of my unrighteousness. I could not heal my own diseases. I could adopt myself into your family. Only you could make me to be your child. You have lavishly and generously demonstrated your compassion and love to me. That’s true. You have heard my prayers. You have both given and granted the desires of my heart. Like what? What desires of your heart have I given and granted? It is the desire of my heart to live in an intimate relationship with you. I want to love you with all my heart and mind and soul and strength. I want to live my life with and for you. I want to know you. I want to listen to your voice. I want to go where you guide me. I want to do what you ask of me. In every way, I want to do what is pleasing to you. I also want to give all my thanks and praise to you. I want to acknowledge every way that you have blessed my life. None of these desires have come from me. No, they have not. You have both given and are granting these desires in my heart. Yes, I am.

Lord, you have done so much for me. I almost don’t know where to begin to give thanks and praise to you. Except, I know I can start with your biggest gift. You have forgiven my sins and cleansed me of all my righteousness. You redeemed my life from the pit. Amen

When I Am Weak

Three times I pleaded with the Lord to take it away from me. But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong. 2 Corinthians 12:8-10 (NIV)

Being Weak

Do I have to be weak? Isn’t there any other choice? Can’t I be strong? Can’t I be bold and courageous. Can’t I be steady and immoveable? Can’t I be a force to be reckoned with? Maybe, I’m going a little over the top. But, why can’t I have and be everything I need? Those are questions of the past that frequently occupied my heart and mind. I have never been a fan of being weak. I have never enjoyed not having or being everything, I need. I have wanted to be equal to every task. I have wanted to be bold and confident and strong. I have wanted every gift and talent and ability so I could accomplish every plan and fulfill every purpose. But, I have come to understand that it is a very good thing I have not had or been all I have needed. Why is that? As weak as I am, I have still struggled with being self-reliant and self-sufficient and self-centered. I could keep listing how I have depended on myself. There is no need, we both get the idea.

It has been good to come to realize that I don’t have and am not all I need. Why is that? I have come to rely on you. I have come to ask for your help. I have asked you to be strong in my weakness. My weakness has caused me to live in a more intimate relationship with you. That’s true. You have heard and answered my prayer. How so? You have worked in and through my weaknesses. You have given me your courage and strength. You have made me bold and steady. You have given me all I have needed to accomplish your plans and fulfill your purposes. It is only because I have relied on you that I have been able to bear fruit for your kingdom and bring glory to your name. Only in my weakness have I come to know that your power was resting on me. That is very good.

So, I give you thanks and praise for not making me strong. Thank you for causing me to come to rely on you. Thank you for working in and through my life. Thank you that I can live and walk in an intimate relationship with you. Nothing has been better than knowing that you are working in and through my life. Keep on relying on me. Yes Lord, I will.

Lord, I don’t like being weak. Being weak has been frustrating. Being weak has been scary. Being weak has been uncomfortable. I can give thanks for being weak. Being weak has caused me to rely on you. Being weak has allowed you to work in and through me. Amen

As He Had Done Before

Time And Place

Here I am Lord. This is the time. This is the place. What do you mean by saying this is the time and this is the place.? I have always wanted to meet with you in prayer. I always thought that I would develop a regular, daily pattern of meeting in prayer with you. What happened? Nothing, happened. I had good intentions. Every day I thought that some time would open up and we would be able to talk together in prayer. But, time never opened up. The demands and busyness of life filled up every moment of my day. There was never a good time to meet with you in prayer. I noticed. That’s not good. I agree. That is why I am saying now is the time and this is the place when and where I will set aside to meet with you in prayer. I’m making meeting with you in prayer a priority in my life. Let me correct that statement. Go ahead. I am making meet with you in prayer the priority of my life. Why is that? I have no higher priority than to live in an intimate relationship with you. I want to talk with you. I want to listen to you. I want to live my life in a constant dialogue of prayer with you. That will be very good.

What do you want to talk about? That’s not where I really want to start in prayer. Where do you want to start in prayer? I want to start by listening to you. I want to hear your voice. I want to receive your guidance. I want to follow your instruction. I want to sit at your feet. I want to rest in your presence. This is a good place to start in prayer. I have no doubt about that. What do you want to say to me? It pleases me that you want to live in an intimate relationship with me. It brings joy to my heart to know that you are making your relationship with me the priority of your life. You will have what you want. What’s that? You want to live in an intimate relationship with me. You want to live your life in a constant dialogue of prayer with me. Yes, that’s right. Keep on coming to me. Keep on drawing near to me. Keep on praying to me in all the circumstances of life. Keep on seeking me with all your heart and mind and soul and strength then you will live and walk in an intimate relationship with me. Then I will lead you through all the difficult circumstances of life. I will keep praying to you. I will keep on seeking you. We will continue to meet in our time and place. That will be very good.

Lord, help me to develop a daily pattern of prayer that will continue through all the circumstances of life. Thank you, that I can pray to you today, tomorrow and all the next days of my life. I will ask for your help now and every day in the future as I follow you. Amen

Come To Me

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” Matthew 11:28-30 (NIV)

Rest

I don’t know how I got here. I’m not sure how I arrived at this place. Can you be more a little more specific. You know exactly what I am saying. You know what I don’t even have the words to express. Yes, I do. I’m not asking you to say more so that I will understand. I’m asking you to be more specific so you will understand. Oh, I see. Then, I will say more. I’m weary. I’m worn out. I’m depleted and exhausted. I feel like I can go no further. I can’t take another step. If someone asks anything else of me, I think I’ll scream. Maybe that’s part of the problem. What’s that? You have been saying yes to too many things. You have been running yourself ragged. You have wanted to say yes to doing a thousand different good things. In saying yes to too many things, I have done nothing well. In saying yes to too many things, I have not done the most important things. My life has been random and scattered and unfocused. I have no direction. I have lost purpose. Now, I’ m feeling paralyzed by what has been left undone. That’s a problem. That is a heavy weight. It is easy to see why you are weary and worn out.

What do you want to do differently? What is most important to you? I want my life to be centered on you. I want to live in an intimate relationship with you. I want to draw near to you as you draw near to me. I would like to receive guidance and direction from you. I would like to receive purpose and meaning and hope from you. I would like my life to have a rhythm and balance that comes from you. What would that rhythm and balance look like? I’m not sure. You don’t need to be sure. Just tell me what is the desire of your heart. I want to rest in you. I want to be refreshed by you. I want to be vibrant and alive in you. I want to be filled with joy that comes from you. I want thankfulness to overflow my life. I want to be energized by you. I want my life to overflow with all that you have given me so that I have boldness and power and vigor and energy in going out in the world to serve you. I want you to empower my life so that I can be effective in accomplishing whatever you ask me to go and do for you. You are on the right track. How so? Your life Is in need of balance. You need to rest in me so that you can be sent out by me. You need to receive power from me so that you can bear fruit for me. Will you come and rest in my presence? Will you allow me to fill you up so that you will have my power working in and through you? Yes Lord, I will. That will be very good.

Lord, I have allowed myself to become weary. I have allowed myself to function on my own energy and strength. I have been running hard without rest. Help me to come to rest in your presence. Revive, refresh and restore my soul so I can vibrantly serve you. Amen

For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands. For God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of power, of love and of self-discipline. 2 Timothy 1:6-7 (NIV)

Fan Into Flame

I don’t want anything to be unused and go to waste. What’s that? I don’t want any of my spiritual gifts to be unused and go to waste. I don’t want any of my spiritual gifts to go undiscovered and undeveloped and underutilized. I want to bear an abundance of fruit for your kingdom. I want to bring glory to your name. That’s good. My own timid and feeble efforts will accomplish none of that. I will not be able to go and do your will without your help. I will not be able to accomplish your purposes and fulfill your plans without you powerfully working in and through me with the spiritual gifts that you have given to me. That’s true.

Who wants to see you discover and use your spiritual gifts more, you or me? You’ve got me there, I’m sure that you want to see me discover and use my spiritual gifts more than I do. Yet, you are quite passionate about wanting to discover and fully use all your spiritual gifts. Yes, I am. Where did this passionate desire to discover and use your spiritual gifts come from? Did you work up this desire in your heart by yourself? Certainly not, it is you who has fanned the flame of this desire in me. Let’s stop and talk about that word. What word? Let’s talk about the word desire. What do you know about me? What do you know about godly desires that are in your heart? You are the giver and granter of godly desires. What does that mean? If you put a godly desire in my heart, then you will certainly grant it. So, you have a godly desire to powerfully use all the spiritual gifts you have been given so you can bear fruit for my kingdom and bring glory to my name. Is that correct? Yes, that is correct. Is there any chance that I will let that passionate desire and prayer of your heart go unheard and unanswered? No, there is no chance of that. That’s right.

Will you keep on serving me? Will you keep on following me? Will you keep on allowing me to work in and through you? Will you continue to go where I guide you? Will you continually do what I ask of you? Yes, I will. Then you have no need to fear that any of your spiritual gifts will go undiscovered, undeveloped, or underutilized. I will powerfully use you to bear fruit for my kingdom and bring glory to my name. For that, I am very thankful.

Heavenly Father, thank you for the spiritual gifts you have given to me. Help me to discover and use my spiritual gifts. I don’t want any spiritual gift that you have given me to be unused and go to waste. Powerfully use my gifts to bear fruit for your kingdom. Amen
