Be Still

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Promises - Day 12 - Psalm 46:10 - Be Still - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Promises – Day 12 – Psalm 46:10 – Be Still – Growing As Disciples

Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.” Psalm 46:10 (NIV)

Quiet

What a magnificent promise. I could want nothing more. I could think of nothing better. What promise are you referring to? I am referring to your promise that I can know you as I quiet myself before you. That is a very good promise. Yes, I know, of that I am certain. You are aware of the premise to that promise? Yes, I am. Tell me about the premise to my promise. Many of your promises have a premise. Many of your promises require something to be true in order for them to be fulfilled. This promise is no different, in that regard. What will be required of you, if you want to come to know me? I must make being quiet and still before you, a priority, if I want to know you. That is true. Why is it critically important for you to make being quiet and still before me a priority? This hectic life is filled with activity. Great demands are placed on my time. I am constantly being tempted to live a life that is filled with busyness. It would even be easy to believe that always being busy is some kind of virtue. It is not, I know that for sure, without a doubt in my mind. Not only is this world a hectic and busy place; it is also a very noisy place. Often, it is hard to even hear myself think over the noise and distractions of this life. I am no stranger to being overwhelmed by voices that would like to place demands on my time and energy and resources. I could run myself in ragged circles trying to please everyone in this world. Life could pull me in every direction other than toward you if I am not careful. That would not be good. No, it would not. There is one thing I know about with great certainty. What’s that? You will not generally shout for my attention. You will rarely make me come to be quiet and still before you. No, not generally. It is your desire that I draw near to you. It is your plan that I come to you with my heart filled with desire for you. Yes, it is my desire and plan for you to drawn near to me. With that in mind, I would say the best gift you have ever given to me, is the desire to know and love and follow and serve you with all my heart and mind and soul and strength. So, I will make quieting myself and being still before the priority of my life. I will carve out a specific time and a special place to meet with you on a daily basis. That will be very good. Yes, I know. Thank you, Heavenly Father.

Heavenly Father, it is the utmost desire of my heart and goal of my life to come to know and love and follow and serve you. Help me to quiet myself before you. Help me to withdraw from the noise and busyness of this hectic life so I can clearly hear from you. Amen

Be Still And Know

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Becoming Like Christ - Day 115 - Psalm 46:10 - Be Still And Know- Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Becoming Like Christ – Day 115 – Psalm 46:10 – Be Still And Know- Growing As Disciples

“Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.” Psalm 46:10 (NIV)

Be Still

What do you know? I know that if I am still and quiet before you, I will come to know you. What do you think about that thought? That thought is astounding. That thought is revolutionary. That thought is life changing. How so? The idea that I can come to know you is mind blowing. The idea that you want to make yourself known to me is awe inspiring. When I consider that thought my whole world is turned upside down. When I grab ahold of that thought, how I structure my day and use my time comes under complete reevaluation. Why is that? There is no better use of my time and energy, than to spend it coming to know you. Is that what you want to do? Is that what you will do? Yes, is that what I want to do. Yes, that is what I will do. That is very good.

Where and when will you meet with me? I know why you are asking me that question. Why am I asking you this question?  If I don’t have firm plan to meet with you, it will never happen. Is that your voice of experiencing speaking to you? Yes, it is. So, I will meet with you in the morning and in the evening in my office. There I will shut the door to be still and quiet before you. But that is not all. What else? It is also my desire and plan to live my life in a constant dialogue of prayer with you throughout my day. Our morning and evening times together will simply be the start and end of a whole day spent with you. That will be very good.

How will you come to know me? I will be still and quiet myself before you. I will meet with you in your word. I will meet with you in prayer. I will meet with you in worship. How often will you be still and quiet so you can meet with me? There is not a day that I do not need to meet with you. There is not a day that I do not need to be changed by you. There is not a day that I do not need to be guided by you. So, I will be still and quiet before you every day. That will be very good.

What will happen to you as you come to know me? I will be changed from the inside out. I will become more and more like you as I come to know you. I will begin to think your thoughts, speak your words and walk in your ways. I will begin to receive your guidance. I will begin to follow your instructions. I will be able to know and do your will. I will be able to bear fruit for your kingdom and bring glory to your name. I will live a life that is pleasing to you. Yes, you will.

Heavenly Father, I will set aside a time and place to be still before you. I will meet with you in your word. I will meet with you in prayer. I will meet with you in worship. The desire of my heart is to come to know you. Here I am, in your presence, right now. Amen

Key Question… What will happen to you when you make it your regularly habit to be still before God?

Living It Out… Make it you daily practice to set aside a special time and place to be still before God.

Seeing It Happen… Have faith that you will come to know God as you are still before Him.

Be Still And Know That I Am God

The Prayer Filled Life - Day 74 - Psalm 46:10 - Be Still And Know That I Am God - Growing As Disciples

The Prayer Filled Life – Day 74 – Psalm 46:10 – Be Still And Know That I Am God – Growing As Disciples

“Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.” Psalm 46:10 (NIV)

Be Still

That isn’t as easy as it sounds. That does not come naturally to me. What does not come easy or naturally to you? Being still is very difficult for me. Why is that? I like to be busy. I like to be on the go. I like to get things done. That is worldly thinking. That is a dangerous deception. Those are misplaced priorities. How so? Let me ask you a few questions. I’m listening. How well do you think you will come to know me if you don’t spend time with me? How well will you receive my guidance and follow my instructions if you don’t listen to me? What is of higher priority to you than living in an intimate relationship with me? At the end of your life would you rather be able to say that you came to know me intimately or that you got a high percentage of your daily, “to do lists” done? Ordering my life around a series of “to do lists” would be a ridiculous choice. You think so? I do, think so. Well then, why have you raced through life trying to accomplish your “to do lists” and failed to meet with me. That is a very good question. I am glad that you think so. How often have you really quieted yourself before me so that you could come to know me? Hasn’t the busyness and demands and noise of this world tried to keep you from coming to know me intimately? I see your point. I see the foolishness of my thinking. I can see that I have had misplaced priorities. That’s good. That’s wise. That’s true.

How would you like to live your life differently? What are you going to do to reorder your priorities? My number one priority is to come to know you. There is no close second. So, I will set aside a daily time and place to meet with you. I will quiet myself before you. I will be still so that I can come to know you. I will listen to your voice. I will follow you to where you lead me. I will do what you ask of me. I will live the life that you are calling me to live. No longer will I allow the world to distract me from coming to know and love and follow and serve you. That will be very good.

Heavenly Father, it is my desire to know you intimately. I want to hear your voice guiding me through life. Every day, I will set aside a time and place to meet with you. I will withdraw from the demands and busyness of this life. I will quiet myself before you. Amen

Key Question…  Why is it critically important for you to set aside a time and place to be still before God?

Living It Out…  Set aside a daily time and place to be still before God.

Know That I Am God

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Knowing God - Psalm 46:10 - Know That I Am God - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Knowing God – Psalm 46:10 – Know That I Am God – Growing As Disciples

“Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.”   Psalm 46:10 (NIV)

Be Still

Do you want to know me? Do you want to live in an intimate relationship with me? Do you want to know my will? Do you want to walk in my ways? Yes, I want to know you intimately. That is the desire of my heart. I hunger to know you. I thirst to know you. My heart aches with desire to know and love you. There is nothing else in all of life that I want more than to know and love you with all my heart and mind and soul and strength. That is very good. I want you to know me. That is my desire for you. We both want the same thing. You want to know me. I want you to know me.

How do you think that you will come to know me? What will be required of you if you really do want to come to know me? I’m not sure what you mean. If it were your goal to come to know someone what would you do? I would spend time with them. It really would not be possible to know someone without spending time with them. That’s right. How much time would you spend if you really wanted to know someone intimately? Would once a month be enough? No, certainly not. I would never come to know someone intimately at that rate. How about once a week, would that be enough? I doubt it. If I really wanted to know someone intimately I would want to meet with them every day. When you met with the person that you wanted to know intimately would just being around them be enough for you to come to know them intimately? No, if I really wanted to know someone intimately I would need to give them my undivided attention. Yes, that’s right. Do you see where our conversation is headed? Yes, I do. If I want to come to know you intimately I will need to set aside a time and a place to meet with you everyday. When we meet together I will need to be still and give you my undivided attention. Why do you think that is so important? I need to learn to listen attentively to you so that I can hear all that you want to say to me. I need to learn to pay close attention so that I can see all that you want to show me. Yes, I will help you to learn to listen to all that I want you to hear. I will help you to learn to see all that I want to show you.

Will you come to me? Will you meet with me at a specific time in a quiet place? Will you be still before me? Will you give me your undivided attention? Will you listen to all that I want to say to you? Will you pay close attention to all that I want to show you? Yes Lord, I will.

Lord, here I am. I have removed myself from the hectic pace and busyness of life. I have set aside this time and quiet place to meet with you. My ears are open to hear all that you want to say to me. My eyes are open to see all that you want to show me. Amen

Be Still

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Prayer - Psalm 46:10 - Be Still - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Prayer – Psalm 46:10 – Be Still – Growing As Disciples

“Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.” Psalm 46:10 (NIV)

Being Still

This is going to be a battle. This is going to require a fight. This will take all the strength that is in me and then some. I will desperately need your help. I cannot do this on my own, that is for sure. What’s that? Can you be a little more clear? Can you say more? Perhaps it would be a good idea for you to be very specific about what help you will need from me. I will need help being quiet. I will need your help if I am ever to be still before you. Even when I might look still on the outside, which would be a rare event, I would still be racing on the inside. It seems like my heart and mind and life operate at a hundred miles an hour. How will I ever slow done? How will I ever be quiet? How will I ever become still before you? Those are very good questions.

You are right about one thing. What’s that? You will need my help. You will not need just a little bit of my help. You will need a lot of my help. You are right about another thing. What’s that? Becoming quiet and still before me will require all the effort that you have in you. That’s what I thought. That was a good and true thought.

There are two ways in which I want you to learn to be still before me. How so? I want you to learn to sit still to be quiet before me. I want you to be able to hear my voice. I want you to be able to receive my instructions and follow my guidance. You will only learn to hear my voice as you make it your priority to come and sit still before me. Little by little and day by day your ability to hear my voice will grow stronger as you sit still before me. Will you set apart a time and place to sit still before me? Yes Lord, I will. Then you will come to know me. That will be very good.

In what other way must I learn to sit still before you? You must stop trying to take every matter into your own hands. You must allow me to act on your behalf. How will I ever be able to act on your behalf if you won’t let me? Well, that is about to dramatically change. How so? I will stop taking matters into my own hands. What will you do instead? I will pray. I will ask for your help. I will come to rely on you. I will pray patiently and wait expectantly for you to act. Then you will come to know me. That will be very good.

Lord, I have been anything but still. I have raced from one thing to another in life. I have been busy. I have been on the go. I have been restless and relentless. No more. Help me to be still before you. Help me to come to know you and to wait for you to act. Amen

Be Still And Know That I Am God

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Guidance - Psalm 46:10 - Be Still And Know That I Am God - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Guidance – Psalm 46:10 – Be Still And Know That I Am God – Growing As Disciples

“Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.” Psalm 46:10 (NIV)

Meeting With You

Do you want to know me? Do you want to live in an intimate relationship with me? Do you want to know my will and walk in my ways? Do you want to go and do what is pleasing in my sight? You know me. You know the desires of my heart. You know the thoughts of my mind. You know the words of my mouth. Nothing about me can be hidden from you. You know me better than I know myself. That’s true. Why is it then, that you are asking me these questions if you already know how I will answer them? You know the answer to that question without asking me. Answering these questions is a way for me to express my worship to you. It is good for me to state my intentions. It is good to remind myself of the desires of my heart, thoughts of my mind and words of my mouth. That’s right.

With all that is within me I want to know you. There is no higher priority in my life than to come to know you. I want to live in an intimate relationship with you because I love you with all my heart and mind and soul and strength. I want to follow you to wherever you lead me. I want to do whatever you ask of me. I want to live my life with and for you. It is my joy to do what is pleasing in your sight. In every way, I want my life to be an act of worship of you. I want my life to be a living sacrifice to you. But, it is no sacrifice to serve you fully because I love you completely. Yet, it is my prayer that you will fan the flames of my love of you. I want to burn white hot in my devotion to you. Keep drawing me closer. Keep helping me to walk nearer.

What is helping you to come to know me? What will fan the flames of your love for me? What will cause you to burn white hot in your devotion to me? Coming to you will make me able to know you. Being in your presence will fan the flames of my love for you. Receiving all that you have for me will cause me to burn white hot in my devotion to you. Yes, come to me. Yes, be still before me. Receive all that I have for you. Then you will know me. Then you will have the desire of your heart to live with and for me.

Father, help me to slow down. Change the pace of my life. I don’t want the busyness of life to hinder my coming to you. Meeting with you is the priority of my life. I want to be still before you so that I can know you and your will. Amen

Be Still

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Identity - Psalm 46:10 - Be Still - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Identity – Psalm 46:10 – Be Still – Growing As Disciples

“Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.” Psalm 46:10 (NIV)

Know Me

Do you want to know me? Do you want to know my will? Do you want to walk in my ways? Do you want to live a life that is pleasing to me? Yes Lord, I want to know you. Knowing you is the desire of my heart. Knowing you is the passion and pursuit of my life. There is no place I would rather be than in your presence. There is nothing I would rather do than your will. In every way and on every day, I want to live a life that is pleasing to you. So, yes, I want to walk in your ways. That is very good.

What must I do if I want to know you? That is a very good question with a very simple answer that I will not answer for you. Why is that? You already know the answer to your question. So, let me hear your answer. I must seek you with all my heart and mind and soul and strength. When I earnestly seek you, I will surely find you. When I draw near to you, you will most certainly draw near to me. That’s right. How do you know that? This is a promise from your word. Yes, it is. I can hold on to this promise, knowing with certainty that it will come to pass when I earnestly seek you. That’s true.

What will earnestly seeking me look like? How will you go about seeking me with all your heart and mind and soul and strength? How and when and where will you draw near to me? It is very important for me to answer these questions with specific details. Yes, it is. I must not pass by these questions without answering them. That’s right. Why is that? If I don’t set a specific time and place to meet with you it will never happen. If I don’t make meeting with you an absolute priority it will never happen. That’s true, why is that? Life gets busy. Life is noisy. The hustle and bustle of one day will become a week. A week will become a month. A month will become a year. Finally, years will become a life. I don’t want my whole life to race by without making it my pattern and practice and priority to meet with you every day. No, you don’t.

What do you want? I want to draw near to you. I want to rest in your presence. I want to hear everything you have to say to me. I want to be taught and trained by you. I want to be guarded and guided by you. I want to know your will and walk in your ways. I want to know you intimately. I want you to know me intimately. I want to live my life with and for you. That is my prayer. That is the desire of my heart. Do you believe that I will hear and answer this prayer and desire of your heart? Yes, I do. That is very good. Yes, I will.

Father, thank you for bringing me into this place of quietness and rest before with you. I know that it is here that I will begin to know and exalt you in my life. I will keep coming. Fan the flame of desire in my heart to know you.  Amen

Still – Know

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Rhythms - Psalm 46:10 - Still - Know - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Rhythms – Psalm 46:10 – Still – Know – Growing As Disciples

“Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.”  Psalm 46:10 (NIV)

Come To Me

It’s time to slow down. Take a time out. Come to me. Rest in my presence. Be quiet and still before me. You have had places to go. You have had things to do. You have let the busyness and noise of the world crowd me out of your life. You are dry and weary. You are hungry and thirsty. Return to me. Draw near to me and I will draw near to you. I will refresh you. I will revive you. I will restore your soul. Take a deep breath. Relax and rest in my presence. I will feed your hunger. I will satisfy your thirst.

I have heard your call. Forgive me for my distance. Forgive me for my independence. I have wandered away from you. I pursued the world and all that it has to offer. I have been overtaken by the noise and busyness of life. I have let myself become dry and weary. My life has become barren. I have accomplished a lot of nothing as I have pursued my own purposes and plans. I want you and the life you have for me. There is no place I would rather be than in your presence. There is nothing I would rather do than meet with you. That sounds very good.

I see your desire. I know your intentions. I hear your words. Do you have a plan? When will you set a time to meet with me? Where will you set apart as a place to meet with me? I know why you are asking me these questions. My desire and intentions and words are not enough. I have had good desires, great intentions and words of commitment to meet with you. I have not followed through. I have been distracted. I have been diverted. Something else has always grabbed my time and intention. Forgive me for that. I regret that I have done what was urgent and failed to do what was important. No more. Not now. Not ever again. I will set a time and a place to meet with you. That will be very good.

Why do you want to meet with me? Why will you set a time and a place to meet with me? Be very clear in your heart and mind about these questions and your answers. Don’t lightly consider them. Don’t easily pass over them. Your answers will determine the course of your life. You are my Savior and Lord. I want to know you. I want to love you. I want to serve you. I want to live my life entirely for you. In every way I want to do what pleases you. I want my life to be act of worship. I will bow myself down before you. I will come to listen to you. I will do whatever you ask of me. I want you to be lifted up and exalted by all that I think, say and do. I want to be your witness in the world. That is why I will come to you. That is very good.

Lord, my life has been filled with the noise and busyness of the world. I need to slow down and come to a full stop. Help me to rest in your presence. Help me to be still before you. Open up your word and speak to me so I can come to know you. Amen

Be Still

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Be - Psalm 46:10 - Still - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Be – Psalm 46:10 – Still – Growing As Disciples

“Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.” Psalm 46:10 (NIV)

Invitation

You have my invitation. I am calling you to come to me. Rest in my presence. Leave the noise and busyness of your hectic life. Learn from me. Come to know me. Hear my thoughts. Listen to my voice. Let me teach you. Allow me to train you. I will mold and shape your life. I will lead you. I will guard and guide your life. My hand will be on you. You will come to know me. You will walk in my ways. You will accomplish my purposes and fulfill my plans for your life. You will be able to know and do my will.

There is no place I would rather be than in your presence. There is nothing I would do than to come to listen to you. I will leave the noise and busyness of my hectic life. That is no difficult sacrifice for me to make. Coming to know you is the desire of my heart. Nothing would thrill me more than to be able to know and do your will. Only you can make me able to accomplish your purposes and fulfill your plans. Only you can make me fruitful for your kingdom. Only you can help me to bring glory to your name. So, I will accept your invitation. I will come to sit before you. I will rest in your presence. I will be still before you so that I can come to know that you are God. You are my God. You are my King. You are my Savior and Lord. You are worthy of all my praise and honor and glory. You are worthy of all time. You are worthy of receiving all that I am, have and hope to be. Yes, I am. Ask me whatever you will. I will say yes to whatever you ask of me. Here I am now, sitting here in your presence. This is a very good place. It is quiet. It is still. It is calm. I am ready to listen. I am ready to receive all that you have for me. I am ready for you to mold and shape my life. I am ready for you to strengthen and sustain and encourage me through all the ups and downs and twists and turns of life. I will hold on to you as I walk with you through life. Guard and guide my life as I follow you. Direct me to where you want me to go. Give me what you want me to do. Thank you for calling me to come to you. Thank you for your invitation to come to know you.

Heavenly Father, there is no place I would rather be than in your presence. There is nothing I would rather do than to be still before you. Help me to come to know you as I sit still before you. Strengthen, sustain and encourage me as I rest in your presence. Amen
