Go To The Ant

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Wisdom - Proverbs 6:6-11 - Go To The Ant - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Wisdom – Proverbs 6:6-11 – Go To The Ant – Growing As Disciples

Go to the ant, you sluggard; consider its ways and be wise! It has no commander, no overseer or ruler, yet it stores its provisions in summer and gathers its food at harvest. How long will you lie there, you sluggard? When will you get up from your sleep? A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest– and poverty will come on you like a bandit and scarcity like an armed man. Proverbs 6:6-11 (NIV)

Sluggard

Do you know what a sluggard is? I thought you might ask me that so I quickly looked it up. A sluggard is a slow and lazy person. That’s right. You do know that I have given you many gifts, talents and abilities? Yes, I know that you have richly blessed my life. I’m glad you chose that word. What word? You used the word blessed. I have richly blessed your life. Why do you think I have richly blessed your life? Why do you think I have given you so many gifts, talents and abilities? What do you think I might expect of you since I have richly blessed your life with so many gifts, talents and abilities? I’m pretty sure that you expect me to use my gifts, talents and abilities to bless the lives of others. You don’t want anything you have given to me to go to waste. You don’t want any of the gifts, talents and abilities that you have given to me to be unused. That’s right. You don’t want me to be slow to serve you. You don’t want me to be lazy in doing the work that you have given me to do for you. That’s also right.

There will come a day in the not too distant future when I will ask you what you did with what I gave you. I will want you to tell me how you used your gifts, talents and abilities to serve me. I will want you to tell me how you have worked hard to serve me. I will want you to tell me how you have blessed the lives of others with the blessings that I have given to you. That day should be filled with joy. On that day we should be able to celebrate how I have worked in and through your life as you have worked hard to bear fruit for my kingdom and bring glory to my name. On that day there is something that I know you want to hear. Yes, there is. What will you want to hear from me on that day? I will want to hear you say, “Well done, good and faithful servant.” So what will you do now with your life? I will not be slow. I will not be lazy. I will not be a sluggard. I will be filled with joy as I work hard to serve you. I will use all the gifts, talents and abilities that you have given to bless the lives of others. That will be very good.

Lord, I do not want to be lazy in this life. I want work hard and use all the gifts, talents, and abilities you have given to me to serve you. Show me where and how I can best serve you and others in hard work that you give me to do. Amen

Wisdom From God

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Wisdom - 1 Corinthians 1:27-30 - Wisdom From God - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Wisdom – 1 Corinthians 1:27-30 – Wisdom From God – Growing As Disciples

But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. He chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things–and the things that are not–to nullify the things that are, so that no one may boast before him. It is because of him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God–that is, our righteousness, holiness and redemption.  1 Corinthians 1:27-30 (NIV)

I Chose You

Nothing could be truer. What’s that? You chose what was unwise. You chose what was weak. You chose what was lowly. You chose what was despised and rejected. Beyond that, I would say that you chose what was of next to no worth. Your choice had no redeeming value. What are you talking about? You chose me. Yes, I did choose you.

There is something that I want to correct in your thinking. What’s that? You had no apparent worth and redeeming value. No one looking at you would have seen anything special. Nothing you had done would have grabbed anyone’s attention. You did not stand out. You were of little notice. You were nothing special, except to me. You are of high value to me. You are special in my sight. I paid a very high price to redeem your life. I went far out of my way to make you my own. I chose you. You are my child. I have adopted you into my family. Never forget that. I won’t and for that I am eternally grateful. That is very good.

Again, I have something else to correct in your thinking. What’s that? You are weak, that is true. You can accomplish nothing of lasting and eternal value, without my help. It is a good thing for you to acknowledge your weakness and that you need my help. It is a good thing for you to come to rely on me. But you will have my help. You will be able to do far more than you could ever ask for or even imagine because I will be working in and through your life. You will be able to do everything I ask of you because I will strengthen you. I will make you able to know and do my will. Again, I am so grateful and thankful for that. I welcome you to work in and through my life. I am at your service. That is very good.

So, there is something that I want you to come to expect. What’s that? I want you to expect that I will do great and powerful and fruitful things in and through your life. I will enable you to bear fruit for my kingdom. I will allow you to bring glory to my name. That is what I want. That is what I desire. Use my life to accomplish your purposes and fulfill your plans. Yes, I will, you can be certain of that. Thank you, Lord.

Lord, there was nothing in me meriting redemption. I was thinking and speaking and acting in ways that were not pleasing to you. I was living an unproductive and foolish life. Yet, you chose me. Thank you, for being my righteousness, holiness and redemption. Amen

Blessed Is The Man

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Wisdom - Psalm 1:1-3 - Blessed Is The Man - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Wisdom – Psalm 1:1-3 – Blessed Is The Man – Growing As Disciples

Blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked or stand in the way of sinners or sit in the seat of mockers. But his delight is in the law of the LORD, and on his law he meditates day and night. He is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither. Whatever he does prospers. Psalm 1:1-3 (NIV)

Two Things

There are two things that I want you to do. There are two things that you must do if you want me to bless your life. I want you to bless my life, that is for sure. What do you want me to do? What must I do if I want you to bless my life? I think that you can answer both of your own questions. You do? Yes, I do. Your statements sounded like you were going to tell me about something that I did not know. No, that’s not it. My statements are meant to call to your attention something that you already know. So, let me hear your answers. What two things must you do? I must turn away from evil of every kind. I must not think what evil thinks. I must not speak what evil speaks. I must not do what evil does. What else? I must not go where evil goes. I must not stay where evil stays. Anything more? I must give no ground to evil. I must not let evil entice me. I must not let evil surround me. I must not let evil allure me. I must make a complete break from evil in every form. That’s right.

Will it be difficult to make such a complete break from evil? Will you be able to resist every evil and stand against every temptation? On my own strength, with my own abilities, I will be unable to resist every evil and stand against every temptation. My own strength and abilities will leave me completely vulnerable to evil and temptation. What will you do? I will rely on you. How will you rely on me?  I will allow you to change my heart, transform my mind and protect my life. I will allow you to make me able to resist every evil and stand against every temptation. How will you allow all this to happen? What will I use to change your heart, transform your mind and protect your life? What will I use to make you able to resist every evil and stand against temptation? You will use your word. Your word will change my heart, transform my mind and protect my life. I will meditate on your word day and night. Your word will feed me. Your word will sustain me. Your word will strengthen me. Your word will mold and shape me. Your word will guard and guide me. Yes, my word will do all of these things for you.

Will you remove yourself from evil of every kind as you meditate on my word day and night? Yes Lord, I will. Then your life will be blessed. Then your life will be like a well-watered tree planted by a stream of water. Then your life will prosper and bear abundant fruit for my kingdom and glory. That is what I want. That is my hope and dream and desire. That is very good.

Lord, I will meditate on your word day and night. I will allow your word to change the thoughts of my mind, words of my mouth and deeds of my life. Use your word to help me turn away from evil and resist temptation. Sustain and bless my life with your word. Amen

With Humility

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Wisdom - Proverbs 11:2 - With Humility - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Wisdom – Proverbs 11:2 – With Humility – Growing As Disciples

When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with humility comes wisdom. Proverbs 11:2 (NIV)

Let Go Of Pride

I have not done well on this count. It sounds like you are feeling like you are being judged. We are not in court. You are not being judged by me. That’s good. You do want something from me however. Yes, I do. Tell me what you want. I want to let go of my pride. I want to reject prideful living in all its forms. I don’t want to think prideful thoughts. I don’t want to speak prideful words. I don’t want to do prideful deeds. I see, what then, is the problem? I can’t overcome my pride with my own efforts. That’s right. Relying on your own efforts to overcome your pride would be just one more prideful effort. That’s what I thought. That was a good thought. That thought came from me.

Well, here I am. I am asking for your help. I am so tired of living a prideful life. All my thoughts, words and deeds are filled with pride. Your assessment is not correct. You are discouraged. Not all your thoughts, words and deeds are filled with pride. Is it prideful to come to ask me for my help? Is it prideful to acknowledge that you cannot overcome your own pride? Is it prideful to come to rely on me? Is it prideful to admit the sin of pride that is within you? No, it is not. You are in a good place. It is a good thing to confess your sin. It is a good thing to ask for my help. It is a good thing to come to rely on me.

Don’t think that you should be further along in your life of faith. Don’t think that there should not be so much pride within you. Don’t allow yourself to become discouraged and depressed. Don’t for a moment think that you are a hopeless case. Be joyful that I will help you. Be hopeful that I will change you. Believe that I will work in you and through your life. We both want the same thing. What’s that? You want to live humbly and wisely as my witness in the world. You want to be used by me. You don’t want pride to hinder my working in and through your life. Yes, I want these things. I want you to do your work in my life. I want you to mold and shape me into the person you have called me to be. Do you have faith in me? Do you believe in me? Do you trust me? Yes Lord, I have faith and trust in you. I believe that you will hear and answer my prayers. Then be encouraged. Then be lifted up. Keep on moving forward with me as I do my work in and through your life. Yes Lord, I will. That will be very good.

Lord, I have been proud. Pride has led me to think what I should not have thought. Pride has caused me to say what I should not have said. Pride has directed me to do what I should not have done. Help me to reject pride so I can humbly grow in your wisdom. Amen

Bad Company

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Wisdom - 1 Corinthians 15:33 - Bad Company - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Wisdom – 1 Corinthians 15:33 – Bad Company – Growing As Disciples

Do not be misled: “Bad company corrupts good character.” 1 Corinthians 15:33 (NIV)

Your Company

Who are you allowing into your inner circle? Who have become your intimate friends? Who is speaking into your life? Who is giving you wise counsel? How are you becoming like those who are around you? Is there a reason that you are asking me these questions? I don’t want you to make huge mistakes. I don’t want you to become mislead. How so? You might think that you will be unchanged and untouched by people that surround your life. That would be incorrect. That would be a huge mistake. You will become like those people that you allow into your inner circle. Really? Yes, really.

Will you be happy if you become like your intimate friends? Are your intimate friends setting an example for you to follow? Do those in your inner circle want to love me with all their heart and mind and soul and strength? Do your close friends want to go where I guide them to do what I ask of them? Are you being lifted up, encouraged and spurred on in your faith by the people that surround you? Those are good questions. Those are tough questions. I certainly want to be that kind of friend to all those who are around me. I want to be an example that others can follow. I would like others to be able to imitate my life as I love and follow and serve you. That will be very good. I want to lift up, encourage and spur others on in their faith. If I haven’t done that, then I have accomplished nothing. If I haven’t done that then I have not been fulfilling your purposes and accomplishing your plans. That’s true.

Make no mistake about it, you will become like those who surround you. Don’t let others cause you to think and speak and acts in ways that are not pleasing to me. Don’t be led by others to go where you should not have gone. Do not be led by other to do what you should not have done. Keep this thought in you, bad company will corrupt good character. Just the opposite is also true, good company will build good character. Who do you want in your company? I want people that are fully devoted to you in my company. I want people that hunger and thirst for righteousness in my company. I want people who know and love you in my company. I want people who are following and serving you in my company. I want people who are trying to live a life that is fully pleasing to you in my company. These people will help you to know and do my will. These people will help you to bear fruit for my kingdom and bring glory to my name. Keep these people close to you. Yes Lord, I will.

Lord, I know that I am surrounded by darkness. I know that this world is filled with evil of every kind. I know you don’t want me to sit, stand or walk with the evil in this world. Help me to distance myself from bad company that will seek to corrupt my character. Amen

Sharpens Another

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Wisdom - Proverbs 27:17 - Sharpens Another - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Wisdom – Proverbs 27:17 – Sharpens Another – Growing As Disciples

As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another. Proverbs 27:17 (NIV)

Sharped

Do you want to be sharpened as one of my followers? I’m not sure what that means. Do you want to be as effective as you can be as one of my followers? Do you want to be used to the utmost to accomplish my highest purpose for your life? I certainly do not want to fall short. I definitely don’t want to miss the mark. I want to accomplish your purposes. I want to fulfill all your plans. I don’t want any gift, talent or ability that you have given me to go undiscovered or unused. I don’t want to leave anything in reserve. I don’t want to make any retreats. I want to have no regrets. That is very good.

How will you sharpen me for your use? That is a very good question. I will sharpen you in an almost innumerable variety of ways. You couldn’t begin to imagine how and what I will use to sharpen you as one of my followers. There is one way that I will use to sharpen you that I want to talk about with you now. How is that? I will use others to sharpen you. I will use your brothers and sisters in faith to sharpen you. Not only that, I will use you to sharpen your brothers and sisters in the faith as well. Others will help you to bear fruit for my kingdom and bring glory to my name. You will help others to bear fruit for my kingdom and bring glory to my name. I like that. This is what I want. This is the desire of my heart. That is very good.

If you want to sharpen others and be sharpened by them there is one thing you must do and one thing you must not do. What must I do? You must live in close relationship with the brothers and sisters in faith that I bring into your life. You cannot remain distant to your brothers and sister in the faith if you hope to sharpen others and be sharpened by them. Do you understand? Yes, I do. Will you live in close relationship with your brothers and sisters in the faith? Yes, I will. That will be very good. What must I not do? You must not be stubborn and proud and resistant to my working in and though you. If you hope to be sharpened and sharpen others you must humbly allow my work to be done in and through you. It will take humility to be willing to be sharpened by others. It will take humility to be willing to sharpen the lives of others. Will you let go of all stubbornness, pride and resistance? Will you humbly allow me to work in and through you? Yes Lord, I will. That will be very good.

Lord, I want to be sharpened as one of your followers. I want to be able to help sharpen others as they follow you. I will allow you to sharpen me through the work of your followers. Use me also in other’s lives so they too can be sharpened as they follow you. Amen

Overlooks An Offense

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Wisdom - Proverbs 19:11 - Overlooks An Offense - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Wisdom – Proverbs 19:11 – Overlooks An Offense – Growing As Disciples

A man’s wisdom gives him patience; it is to his glory to overlook an offense. Proverbs 19:11 (NIV)

Overlooks An Offense

Well, I haven’t done this, that is for sure. What haven’t you done? I haven’t overlooked an offense. I haven’t let something go when someone has harmed or hurt me. I have kept a record of every wrong that has been committed against me. That is a problem. This is no small issue. You might say that this is a very big deal. How so? You tell me, I am sure that you know by now. Yes, I do. Holding on to hurts only hurts me. If I don’t let go of a hurt it will only continue to wound me. I will never move on. I will never be healed. I will never be made whole. That’s true. What else? If I don’t let go of hurts or overlook offenses I will not be able to be a bright and shining witness in the world for you. Why is that? It is the way of the world to hold onto offenses to hold on to hurts and never overlook offenses. That kind of behavior is nothing like the example you have set for me. How so? You overlooked offenses. You did not hold on to hurts. You were always ready, willing and able to forgive others not long after they hurt you but even while they were hurting you. Yes, I did. Do you want to be like me? Yes, I do. I want to be able to love like you loved. I want to be able to live like you lived. I want to be able to forgive like you forgave. That is very good. That is very important. Why is that so important? You know the answer to that question as well. Let me hear your answer. If I want to be forgiven of my sins, then I must forgive others who sin against me. I must be one who overlooks every offense that has been committed against me. That’s right.

I tell you one thing. What’s that? I need your help. I need your wisdom. I need your patience. I don’t have the wisdom and power and strength in me to wisely and patiently overlook every offense. I desperately need your help. Is that your prayer? Yes, that is my prayer. Do you believe that I will hear and answer this prayer of yours? Yes, I believe. I have no doubt in my mind. Yes, I will hear and answer this prayer of yours. I will make you able to wisely and patiently overlook every offense so you will be a bold and bright witness for me in the world. Thank you, Lord!

Lord, I have been unwise and impatient. I have not usually overlooked an offense. I have kept a record of wrongs committed against me. Forgive me just as I will forgive others. Use me as your witness in the world as I overlook offenses committed against me. Amen

Answers Before Listening

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Wisdom - Proverbs 18:13 - Answers Before Listening - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Wisdom – Proverbs 18:13 – Answers Before Listening – Growing As Disciples

He who answers before listening– that is his folly and his shame. Proverbs 18:13 (NIV)

Listening Well

Listening well, that is not my strong suit. Why is that? I think you know why. Yes, I know why. But, do you know why? Yes, I know why. But, it’s hard to admit. What’s hard to admit? It’s hard to admit that I am proud. How so? Somewhere, down deep inside me I have this feeling that I don’t need to listen. I have the false belief that I already know the answer. I have this assumption that I have all I need. I know it all. I am always right. I cannot gain anything by listening to someone else. Do you really believe that? Looking at those words, I can’t believe that even a part of me believes them. It is so proud. It is so foolish. It is simply idiotic. Yes, it is. But, what would explain my caring far more about what I might say next than to what someone might have to say to me. This is not a small problem. This is not a minor flaw. This is a big deal. This is a dangerous mindset. How so? Why is that?

If you can’t listen well to others how well do you suppose you can listen to me? Before you answer, think about what I have said to you. You are telling me that how well I listen to others will help me gauge how well I listen to you. Yes, I am. Why do you suppose that is? Whatever hinders my ability to listen to others will also hinder my ability to listen to you. That’s right. What else? I’m not sure. What else is there? How often have I tried to speak to you through the voice of others? Oh, I see. I get it. Do you? Well, I should I say that I understand your question. I have often failed to listen to what you were saying to me through the voice of others. How so? You have tried to give me warnings through the voice of others that I have failed to heed. You have tried to give me direction through the voice of others that I have failed to follow. You have tried to give me wisdom and knowledge and understanding through the voice of others that I have failed to receive. Yes, you have missed my voice as I have tried to speak to you. You have not listened well.

Do you want to change? Do you want to become a listener? Yes, I do want to change. Yes, I will become a listener. Why is that? I want to know your will and walk in your ways. I want to do what is pleasing in your sight. I want to live the life that you have called me to live. So, you will listen attentively to me? You will make it a habit to be listening well? Yes, I will. Here I am now, listening to you. Yes, you are. That is very good.

Lord, I have not listened well. I have not payed attention to your voice speaking to me. I have not met with you in your word to hear what you have to say to me. I have been more interested in speaking than listening. No more, I will listen attentively to you. Amen

Fear Of The Lord

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Wisdom - Proverbs 1:7 - The Fear Of The Lord? - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Wisdom – Proverbs 1:7 – The Fear Of The Lord? – Growing As Disciples

The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline. Proverbs 1:7 (NIV)

I Need You

Do you know it all? Are you full of knowledge? Do you have all you need? Can you guard and guide your own life? Do you know the path to life? Do you know where to walk? Do you know what to avoid? Will you accept wisdom and discipline and instruction from me? Will you make yourself attention to my voice? Will you listen to me? Will you follow and obey me? You are asking me a lot of questions. Yes, I am. Do you have any answers? That is kind of the point isn’t it? What do you mean by saying that? I don’t have the answers. I am not wise. I am not full of knowledge. I desperately need your wisdom and discipline and instruction. I don’t know where to walk. I don’t know what to avoid. I need you to guard and guide my life. I need to you. These are good admissions.

What do you fear? I fear that I will live less than the life you have called me to live. I fear that I will waste what you have given to me. I fear that I will miss something because I have not been fully attentive to your voice. I have a healthy awe and respect and fear of you. My fear of you makes me want to be attentive to your voice. My fear of you makes me take seriously everything you have to say to me. That’s good.

Want do you want? I want to know and love you. I want to follow and serve you. I want to live a life that is fully pleasing to you. I want to go where you guide me. I want to do what you ask of me. I want to live in an intimate relationship with you. I want to walk with you through life. That’s good.

What do you believe about me? I believe that you are my Savior and Lord. You are my God and King. You love and care for me. You will guard and guide my life. You will lead me to where you want me to go. You will give me what you want me to do. My life is in your hands. That’s good.

What have I done in you, for you and through you? You have changed me. You have made me new. You have forgiven my sins. You have cleansed my unrighteousness. You have redeemed my life. You have given me a new life to live. You have given me a hope and a future. You are using me to bear fruit for your kingdom and bring glory to your name. Yes, I have. Yes, I am. Yes, I will.

Keep on loving me. Keep on following me. Keep on serving me. Yes Lord, I will. That will be very good. Then you will have nothing to fear.

Lord, I do have a healthy awe, respect and fear of you. I am attentive to you. Listening to you is the priority of my life. I want to hear and act on everything you have to say to me. Give me your wisdom and discipline. Guard and guide me as I joyfully follow you. Amen

The Lord’s Will

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide - Wisdom - Ephesians 5:15-17 - The Lord's Will - Growing As Disciples

Discipleship Devotional Study Guide – Wisdom – Ephesians 5:15-17 – The Lord’s Will – Growing As Disciples

Be very careful, then, how you live–not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is. Ephesians 5:15-17 (NIV)

Every Opportunity

Are you being very careful how you live? I’m sure that I’m making mistakes and that I could be much more careful. Yes, you are and yes, you can. What kind of mistakes am I making? You tell me. I’m sure that you are aware of some of your mistakes, right now. Yes, I am. Let’s talk about them.

I’m making the mistake of losing perspective. I forget what is most important and of ultimate value.  Can you give me an example? Yes, I can. Sometimes I live with an earthly rather than heavenly perspective. An earthly, “this is all there is” perspective measures everything with today’s value.  With this perspective, how I am treated, matters a great deal to me. If I’m wronged in some way, I’m likely to react negatively. Setting the record straight or seeking justice for myself becomes a primary concern to me. I’m sure that some of my reactions relate to my expectations. What are you expecting?  I’m expecting that I will be treated with kindness, honor and respect.  Does that seem like a realistic expectation to you? No, not really.  Why not? This world is broken and corrupted by sin.  Yes, it is. People don’t think and speak and act as they should.  No, they do not.

What kind of perspective do you want to have? I want to have an eternal perspective. I want to be aware of the fact, that I am living in a broken world that is corrupted by sin.  What will you do differently with that perspective in mind?  I won’t expect to be treated with kindness, honor, and respect, that’s for sure.  So, I won’t get all bent out of shape when I experience mistreatment. What will you do instead? I will look for every opportunity to do good and be a witness for you in this world, even when I’m being mistreated.  Why will you do that?  This world and this life is passing away.  Life on earth is very temporary. I want my life to be used by you. I want to be a witness for you in this world. I want to bear fruit for you, that will last for all eternity. How will you do that? I will do good, even in response to evil. Doing good in the face of evil will stand out. It will get noticed. People will wonder why someone would respond to evil by doing good. They will ask questions. Yes, they will. What will you tell them? I will tell them about you. I will tell them that I am simply following the example that you have placed before me. They will see that I am loving like you loved. They will see that I am giving like you gave. They will see that I am living like you lived. They will see that you have given me a completely new life to live. They will want the same kind of new life that you have given to me. They will be drawn to you. They will want to live and walk in an intimate relationship with you. Yes, they will because they will see that you are taking advantage of every opportunity to love others with my love. They will see that you are both knowing and doing my will. That will be very good.

Lord, help me to make the most of every opportunity to serve you in this world. I want to live my life as your witness in the world. Help me to love like you loved, give like you gave and live like you lived. Use me to bear fruit for your kingdom and glory. Amen
